Chapter 11
It wasn't until midnight the next night that Mahdi, Neela, and Yazeed made it to the palace in Miromara.
Without stopping for a second the three sped their way to the infirmary. They didn't know what condition Sera was in, but they knew it was bad. There wasn't a second to waste. Mahdi knee he needed to see Sera.
Once down in the infirmary Becca slowed the trip down so they didn't run into anything. "Catch your breath. All of you. You'll need it," she said holding Mahdi's shoulder.
The three took deep gasping breaths as they tried to collect themselves. Once they had they stood up straight, and braces themselves for the worse. Becca lead them into the room. What they had imagined was far different than what they were seeing in front of them.
Neela's hand flew to her mouth. Yazeed began to pale, and Mahdi began to break down. All heads turned to the three. Des stood up and moved from the bed to make room for Mahdi. "They don't know how long she'll last, but they know it won't be long," Des said to Mahdi.
Mahdi shook his head, and bent down to Sera. She was too pale. Her usual semi tan skin color was gone. Instead she was white like a moon beam. Her built muscles were replaced with skin, bones, and scars that will forever remain. She was incredibly thin. Everything felt like it was on a hanger. Her bones being the hanger, and everything else being the clothing. It was too much for Mahdi to bear.
Mahdi carefully took Sera's hand in his. It was brittle, and cold. It was all bone. He shook his head in disbelief. Silent tears began to fall down his cheeks. Soon it was a silent sob.
It was then that Sera began to heave. She was struggling to get breaths out. Everyone snapped to attention. Her breaths were hallow, and shaky. Soon they became more separated. Then nothing. No one knew what to do.
Neela took charge and called for a doctor. Sure enough two doctors came in. One began with Sera, the other ushered everyone out of the room. Another two doctors swam into the room, and closed the door.
Everyone broke down in their own ways. Des, Mahdi, and Neela gathered each other and sobbed. Yazeed stood with his back to the wall with silent tears rolling down his face. Becca, and Ling stood together looking pained. Then Ava didn't break down at all. She had feelings for Sera, but she was doing something else. Concentrating. She was near the point where she could see through the door, and she wasn't going to stop now.
Seconds turn to minutes. Minutes bled into hours. Finally at dawn a doctor comes out. His head was bowed. His face was dark. "We're sorry," he began, "she won't last until the end of the day. We've worked all night. She's nothing but barely breathing. There's nothing more we can do for her."
That's when Des lost it. He broke down. He crumpled onto the floor in a sobbing heap. Neela came to his aid. Everyone began to cry except for Mahdi. He stood there shocked. He couldn't move, he couldn't speak, he couldn't do anything. He was numb. His Sera wasn't going to make it. There was nothing to do now. Nothing he could do, but be numb with pain.
