We're at war.
At least, I think so. War is a strong word. It can mean many things. Guns and army type of war, sibling type of war, a war with yourself. We are fighting a non-officially-proclaimed war.
Security has gotten tighter, training more intense, and less and less time for fun. We're no longer allowed to go far in the ocean or past the northwest training fields. Dragon ball and soccer practices have been cut in half, and younger kids who have never ridden a dragon are being trained to fight.
Dad is getting stressed, being a general, and so are many of my brothers. Short tempers, and greying hair. Maybe the hair thing is just Dad.
I had a sleepover to celebrate my birthday with Colin, Ulysses, Flick, and Pinch at Colin's house. Asher tagged along, bringing s'mores and lucky charms. She's addicted to sweets.
It was not really a just-for-fun birthday sleepover, but more so a let-dad-rest-for-one-night sleepover. I also found out why Ulysses is named, well, Ulysses. Flick and his great-great- something Grandfather was, you guessed it, Ulysses S. Grant. Famous Civil war general, blah, blah.
The tropical island feel of Killian Island is nearly gone. The water's turning colder and more dark blue, the palm trees are dying, and the sand is choked with mud. My dad says it has to do with the Guardian ring. The myth around ring says it has to stay in the guardian room at all time except when in battle. In battle it must be worn around the finger of the head guardian. The guardian room was demolished in the fight because, well, err, a certain fat, white, dragon was pushed by gusts of wind and hit the roof. Don't look at me! I didn't do anything!
Apparently, since we're not in battle, the ring must be in the room. But they're rebuilding it now, and it's, obviously, not there. Anyway, back to the sleep over.
"Checkmate!" Sean, Pinch's little brother yelled, slamming the chess piece against the board.
"Ha, ha, I win, you lose, Ha!" He yelled jumping around the room like a chipmunk on steroids.
"Good job, Sean. Time to go to bed!" Pinch faked yawned. It was only 8 o'clock.
"No!" He whined, mirroring a stereotypical 6 year old. His floppy brown and blond streaked hair covered his eyes as he pouted.
"Pwease?" He looked up from beneath his bangs and gave us puppy eyes.
Pinch sighed as she put the foot down.
"No." She said, not giving in to his cuteness.
He stomped up the stairs to his room just as Asher walked in.
"Grumpy much?" She said, passing his slouching frame.
We turned our heads to the dark night out side our windows. Fireworks of all colors illuminated the skies, remembering our ancestors. Tonight was Memorable Night, conveniently the night before my birthday. The whole town is off of school and work for the day and we gather in the square to celebrate. Even the full time warriors relaxed a little.
We scrambled up the ladder onto the deluxe king sized 7 person bunk bed. One of the ups of living on Killian Island, everything is dragon-sized. Asher split open a bag of oreos and twisted open a thermos of hot chocolate.
"Did you hear? They discovered two new kinds of dragons!" Pinch said, grabbing an Oreo.
"Really! Wait, what do you mean?"Asher was obsessed with anything about science or nature.
"One's called a 'micro-dragon' apparently you can hold them in your hand. The other is called a Stallion-dragon. It's apparently the size of a house, some bigger!" Pinch answered, spilling cookies crumbs everywhere.
"Dad says he might get me a micro one for my birthday." I said, remember what he said this morning. "I hear they're really good companions, like dogs."
Pinch and Asher stared at me.
"What are dogs?"
That's right, no dogs, cats, or any animal besides dragons, insects, and birds were allowed on the island. At least, you would have to keep them indoors at all times and have a permit. The dragon don't really get along with them.
"They're like furry baby dragons with less teeth and a shorter tail. And ears." I answered.
"Oh..." They were still confused.
"Sooooo.... Asher, what's happening in school. I hear they're making kids under 10 go to classes now." I said, changing the subject.
"Yeah, it blows. We learn about the history of the island, the meaning of the old buildings in the square, blah, blah. The only fun thing about it is gym. We get to practice on real dragons!" Asher seemed pretty excited at that last part.
We talked and laughed until our throats hurt, almost like regular kids. Then Lake flew by our window and we remembered we lived on a mystical island with dragons. Oh well, we are almost normal. We fell asleep in a pile of cookies and chips.
I woke up and was bombarded with streamers and balloons.
"Happy birthday to A-Ace, happy birthday to you!!!" Asher linked arms with Colin and Pinch and was screaming at the top of her lungs.
"Thanks guys, umm Asher, you can quiet down now." I smiled, blocking my ear drums with my fingers.
"Oh, sorry, I get excited."
We all laughed and climbed down the ladder one after the other.
"Thanks guys! You didn't have to!" I yelped when I saw the huge pile of presents.
"Open mine," "No mine!" "Mine's Better!"
"Okay, I'll open...this one!" I shushed them and picked up a medium sized gold wrapped box.
"Thats mine!" Colin yelled.
Ripping open the wrapping paper, my eyes widened at the present inside.
"Oh my god!"
I hugged Colin so hard, I thought she would burst. A pair of riding boots and an iPad was inside. Colin would've had to get the iPad when she was in New York, or asked someone going on a quest to grab one. The riding boots fit perfectly. "Thanks dude!"
I opened Asher's next, then Flicks..then- oh my god, I have amazing friends.
"Oh, guys we have a dragon ball game in an hour. We're going to crush the Tigers! But I have to stop by my house and drop these off and these amazing presents!" I said after hugging everyone atleast 15 times.
"Okay, see ya!" I hopped out the window and Lake flew below me, picking me up just before I hit the ground.
"Whoooooo!" I yelled as he flipped in the air.
