Chapter Ten
I flew around for what felt like hours, never letting up my speed as I glided through the clouds, watching the sun completely set and the moon and stars appear. I was breathing easier now, my earlier rage dwindling as I relaxed into the chill of the evening air. Someone only had as much power over you as you allowed them to have, and if I made sure not to feel anything towards Jake, whether it be hate or any other emotion, it meant he had no power over me and that was something I had to remember.
I pushed my hair out of my eyes that had caught a cross wind but stilled when I smelt something that had been carried on the wind. Blood. Not just any blood, human blood.
I paused slightly in my flight, causing myself to drop in altitude slightly. Should I go and make sure the person was okay? I mean it didn't smell like there was a lot of it, just enough for it to catch in the wind, maybe a busted leg or a cut up forehead. I'm sure whoever it is will be fine, I'm sure they can look after themselves.
I flew away from the smell that was now a distant memory in the wind but groaned when my brain wouldn't shut up. If only my brain could forget about it as easily as the wind.
I turned around and dropped through the now thinning cloud bank, not enough for the people below to see the stars but enough for me to get a peek as to where I was landing, tree's thank god. It really did help that I lived in a pretty wooded area and I nearly always had somewhere to hide.
I dropped into the canopy of the trees and flew to where the smell was coming from, not too far from me. Within seconds I could see a figure passed out on the forest floor and my heart skipped slightly as I noticed blood covering the surface of a nearby rock and the person laying motionless next to it. Maybe it was a good thing that I'd decided to come and investigate.
I landed not too far from the figure and quickly shoved my coat on which had been tucked away in my rucksack, making sure my wings were hidden from view, before making my way over cautiously to the body. I could hear that the figure still had a heartbeat, so at least he was still alive, but the stillness of the guy still gave me cause for concern. A head injury could mean any number of things and could cause a person to deteriorate without the proper medical treatment.
"Hello?" I whispered into the quietness as I took precautionary steps towards the guy, "are you alright?"
I got nothing in response and so quickly crossed the last few steps so that I could reach the guy and get him some help. When I knelt beside him though I frowned and looked up at the sky in frustration. "Really? It had to be him?" I grumbled as I rolled my eyes and looked down at a passed out Jake, mud plastering his clothes and red matting his blond hair.
For a brief moment I thought about leaving him, letting his friends find him and get him to a hospital, but when I surveyed the area, using my heightened hearing to see if they were anywhere nearby, I knew I couldn't leave him. His friends were nowhere in sight, so it was up to me to make sure he got some help.
I groaned as I looked down at his face again before accepting my fate and pushed the hair from his eyes. "Jake? Jake, can you hear me?" I asked as I started to inspect the area. I had no formal training, but seeing as I'd been living on my own with no hope of being able to go to the doctors, I'd taught myself the basics in first aid. I just hoped it would be enough.
I got no response from him, but I kept calling his name as I inspected the area. It was a nasty cut, running a few inches in length between his right temple and his crown, but thankfully it didn't look too deep. He probably just needed a few stitches and he'd be alright again.
I finally got a grumble from him when I gently prodded the area around his cut, obviously causing him pain. I could smell cheap vodka on his breath though so hopefully the alcohol was numbing the pain for him a little. I'd had an injury not too dissimilar to this when I was younger. I had been running in the playground at school when I tripped and fell, hitting the side of my head on the edge of some stone steps, so I knew the pain.
"Alright Jake, come on let's get you to a hospital," I mumbled, more to myself than him as I knew he was still passed out.
I rummaged through my rucksack until I found one of my spare tops and bundled it up so that I could press it against his head. He grumbled but otherwise didn't complain as I used the arms of the top to wrap it securely onto his head, hoping it would hold until we got to the hospital. I had no idea where we were in regards to where it was, but I had to hope that his head wasn't too serious where if we did get lost and not make it to the hospital quickly it wouldn't cause severe damage.
I pulled him to his feet and swung his arm over my shoulder, being careful to look for any signs that he was going to be sick. The last thing I needed was for him to throw up on me, I already had his blood on me, I didn't need his vomit too.
"Okay Jake we're just going to take this one step at a time," I mumbled as I whistled loudly into the air, calling Harper over. She could tell me where the general direction of the closest road was.
Thankfully she hadn't been too far away and before long I was dragging Jake through the forest, following Harper as she hopped from tree to tree in front of me. She didn't like being near humans but I was entirely grateful to her for helping me anyway.
After about five or ten minutes I paused in my efforts and took in a deep breath, even though I was slightly stronger than the average person, it still took a lot out of me to pretty much carry this six foot guy all the way to the hospital. Jesus he was heavy.
Just then a weird buzzing noise filled the silence and it only took me a second to notice that it was coming from Jake's back pocket. His phone!
I shuffled him in my arms so that I could reach around him and pull the phone from his pocket, maybe I could use it to anonymously call him an ambulance and be done with this entire evening. I didn't like hospitals, they asked too many questions, so if I could stay out of this whole situation it would make my life a whole lot easier.
I looked at the screen as the backlighting lit up our surroundings and cringed slightly when I saw the name mom flash across the screen. Should I answer it? She was obviously worried about him if she was ringing this late at night.
I held my breath before pressing the accept button and bringing the phone to my ear, but before I could get a word out the woman on the other end had already started screaming at me.
"Where the hell have you been?" She yelled, her voice high pitched with worry and anger. "I've been calling and calling all night and you haven't answered any of my calls. You could have been dead in a ditch for all I knew with your lack of communication," she shrieked.
"Ms Sul-" I tried to butt in but she just carried on with her rant, not listening to what was being said on the other side of the phone.
"Darrel has already come home and told me that they lost track of you almost two hours ago! TWO HOURS?! You better have a good explanation for this young man otherwise you'll never see the light of day again. Do you hear me?"
"Ms Sulfree?" I semi yelled into the phone, getting annoyed at her ranting as I helped her unconscious son up with my free hand.
I was met with silence on the other end for a moment before her voice dropped down two octaves as she asked me "who is this?"
"My name is... umm... Martha, I found your son passed out on the floor. He seems to have banged his head and may be slightly concussed?" The last thing I needed was to give her my real name and start asking questions as to why I was out here in the first place.
"WHAT?!" She screamed, causing me to hold the phone away from my ear. "Is he okay?"
"He seems to be," I answered as I looked over at him. "I think he's passed out more from the alcohol than the head wound to be honest with you, and he hasn't thrown up which is a good sign. His head also seems to have stopped bleeding but I'm not sure without moving the top I've secured against his head," I told her.
"What does his heartbeat sound like? Is it at all irregular?" She asked, still worried but with an edge of authority to it now.
"No it's pretty steady," I answered quickly, realising I should have paused to pretend to check instead of using my heightened scenes to listen to the steady rhythm.
"Okay good, I'm going to need you to get into his phone so that you can send your location to me," she responded as I heard loads of rustling on the other end of the line.
"Oh don't worry Ms Sulfree, I was just going to get him straight to the hospital," I told her as I started up my trek through the forest again, the phone in one hand and a passed out Jake in the other.
"No it's fine sweety, the ER is completely backed up at the moment because of an accident that happened a few hours ago on the freeway, just hang tight where you are and I'll assess him and see if he needs to go," she told me. "I'm in the car now so I'll have to hang up to follow the GPS, I won't be long okay?"
"Alright, I'll be here," I muttered as I hung up the phone. I looked at the now black screen for a second before using his face to unlock it and open up the maps app, at least I now had an idea of where the road was. I quickly switched to Whatsapp so I could send our location to his mum before flicking again back to Google Maps.
After quickly finding the best route to take, I tugged Jake through the trees, his feet dragging behind him with every step. We weren't that far away from the road now, only a few feet, so I decided to settle Jake onto the floor and lowered his head so it was resting backwards and to the side slightly.
"God you are so lucky I live nearby," I mumbled as I made sure the t-shirt was tight around his head. "If I hadn't found you I'm not sure who would have, being so deep in the forest," I muttered with a roll of my eyes. "I hope your mum yells at you until your ears ring... whilst you still have your hangover," I grumbled before standing up to study him. He was out cold, his chest slowly rising and falling the only indication he was even alive and I grumbled quietly before turning my back on him. Idiot.
I ran behind a tree to make sure I could kept an eye on him until his mum arrived. There was no way I was going to be here when she arrived, but I couldn't exactly just abandon him drunk, with a head injury, and without any form of supervision. It sounded like his mum worked in the hospital so I knew he'd be in good hands as soon as she arrived.
I watched over him for the next ten minutes from the tops of the trees and hidden behind some branches whilst we waited for his mum to arrive. He had started babbling incoherently as I chuckled at his stupid drunk behaviour. This would have been perfect ammunition to use against him to make my life a whole lot easier if I'd had a phone to record him, too bad no one could know that I'd been out here, especially Jake.
Finally I heard an engine speed around the corner heading towards us. It was going faster than any that had driven by so far so I knew this had to be his mum.
I remained motionless as I disappeared into the treetops, peeking through a small gap in the leaves to watch on and know with one hundred percent certainty that he was going to be looked after once I flew off and left him. Not that I cared seeing as the little shit had lied to me about why he was late today. School was everything to me, and if he was going to get in my way of that I was going to try everything in my power to get a new partner or work solo. It wasn't like I needed him anyway, I could do this paper with my eyes closed and one hand tied behind my back.
"Jake? Martha? Are you there?" I heard a voice call from the side of the road, a soft dinging coming from her still running car as she left the door open and started trudging through the undergrowth of the woods. "JAKE?"
I was just about to do something to help her find her son, maybe make a noise or drop a twig onto the floor or something to alert her to where Jake is, when she pulled her phone out and held it against her ear. A moment later Jake's ringtone filled the silence and I sighed in relief at the fact that I wouldn't need to give my location away. Thank god I'd turned the phone on loud before I put it back in his pocket.
I rolled my eyes as his phone started yelling out "WARNING... WARNING... THIS IS YOUR MOTHER CALLING," loud and clear throughout the forest, the volume not even causing him to flinch in his passed out state. Oh he was going to have a headache in the morning and I was more than happy with the fact.
"Jake, is that you? Martha, are you there?"
I felt bad for deceiving his mum, but it was better than the alternative of allowing her to know who I was. After the relief of seeing Jake wore off, she would have asked what I was doing in the woods alone at night and how I had bumped into Jake. It was all too many questions, questions that I wasn't prepared to answer.
"Oh my god Jake!" His mum yelled as she finally caught sight of him sitting up slightly and leaning against a large rock to make sure if he'd thrown up he wouldn't have choked on it.
She was a tall woman, with dark curly hair and skin a shade or two darker than her sons. She was still wearing a pair of light blue scrubs which meant she could have only just come back from work when I'd answered the phone and told her what had happened to Jake.
I felt sorry for the woman, she'd only just gotten off what seemed like a pretty hectic shift, only to be brought right back in because of her son's idiotic and reckless behaviour.
"Jake, can you hear me?" His mum asked as she slowly started to peel the tshirt away that I had wrapped around his head to use as a bandage. "Oh sweetie look at you, why do you always end up doing this to yourself?" She whispered as she pulled a small torch from the front pocket of her scrubs and shined it into his eyes.
So it seemed this was a regular occurrence for him, getting blindingly drunk in the middle of nowhere and passing out. Figures.
I leaned against the side of the tree that I was hiding in and released a breath when I felt it was safe enough that his mum wouldn't spot me up here. She was too focused on her son's state to even check where Martha was, let alone look into the treetops on the off chance someone was there.
"Come on Honey, let's get you home where I can get a proper look at you," she mumbled as she leant in to kiss the top of his head, making sure she missed where all the blood was.
I watched in amazement as she hefted him up enough to drag him over to where her car was and I had to catch myself on multiple occasions from saying to hell with the secrecy and dropping down to help her out. She was smaller than him and yet she was somehow managing to haul her unconscious son with minimal strain.
I closed my eyes as they exited the little clearing and left before I could do something I'd later regret, like fly down there for the world to see and get him into the car.
I flew back home and muttered incoherent words to myself as I did, questioning what was going through my head and why I'd felt the need to go and help him out. He was the worst type of person to be even remotely connected to in school, wherever people like him went others eyes were bound to follow. But I couldn't help but go above and beyond to help him when he was in trouble when I'd never done something like that for anyone in all my years of self imposed exile.
"Stupid," I muttered as I landed outside my house and let myself in. "Stupid and reckless and definitely something that would never be repeated ever again," I scolded myself. And yet... and yet it had been nice, to be in such close proximity with another human being and not constantly being worried that they'd notice something odd about me. I couldn't remember the last time I hadn't had to watch every word I said, calculate every move I made in the hopes that nothing I did would draw attention to myself. It was exhausting and even though I'd been terrified that he'd wake up and see me for who I truly was, it had been nice to just be myself around someone.
I sighed as I collapsed onto my bed and got comfy amongst the covers. "Tomorrow was another day," I told myself as I felt myself drift into unconsciousness and even though it'd been nice being able to be more myself around someone than I had been in years I couldn't slip up and do it again. There was too much at stake for me to pine over something as stupid as company. I had my education that I needed to complete, not to mention my parents who were still out there somewhere and god knows what they'd do to me if they ever found out I hadn't died in that fire.
