Chapter 17
Anika shielded her eyes from the glaring morning sun. She painfully got up from her bed of heather, and seeing that her sister was still asleep and snoring, pushed aside an animal skin and headed outside.
The fire had been put out and all that remained of it were the ashes. The remainder of their dinner had probably been eaten by Kyra. "After all, she is a tiger now." Thought Anika. Her back and arms ached like anything from last night. The heather had provided some comfort, but not nearly enough as her bed at home. But Anika brushed away the thought. She had given up completely on home.
Anika sat down on one of the logs that were around the fire. Anika wished it was still burning, the morning air was chilly. She tilted her head towards the sky, where last night she had gazed at the stars. They were gone nnow, and in its place were screeching birds flying across the sky. Anika, with nothing else to do, started combing her hair with her hand. "Now I need a hairbrush and a shower." She muttered. In a few minutes, she had tied her hair over her shoulder in a fishtail braid and fastened it with her threadbare hairtie. "Now I need a bow and arrow."
In fact, Anika needed a lot of things.
While she was contemplating these things, grey clouds spread across the sky and a wild wind blew everything about. "We're headed for a storm," growled a voice behind her. "So you decided to get up at last!" sighed Anika and crawled back in the tent. "Gee, I hope this thing is water-proof."Anika plonked herself down in the corner of the tent. "And I wish we had a deck of cards or something." Kyra shook her head. "Be careful what you wish for." Anika sat up straight. "What do you mean?" Kyra sighed. "Wishes rarely come true. But when they do, they can be lifechanging. In a good way, or a bad way." "But what does this have to do with a deck of cards?" "That's not the point! Never, ever use that word when you desperately want something. Horrible things can happen." Anika's eyes widened. "I wish you would tell me what!" Kyra held a large paw up to her. "Just stop!" She roared. "You can obviously see that this is hard for me! There is something I need to tell you, genius, but give me time!" With that Kyra prowled out of the tent into the pouring rain.
Anika stared at the place Kyra had been. "There's obviously something up with her." She thought, hurt. "Well no, duh! She's a human-tiger. There IS something up with her." Cupping her hands around her mouth, Anika yelled, "Come back in here RIGHT NOW! You have some explaining to do!" A long time passed with no reply. "Well, then I'm coming out!"
From the second Anika stepped outside, she was drenched. Rain pelted down mercilessly from the black sky. Kyra was nowhere to be seen. Anika tried calling, but the sound was carried away by tthe roaring wind. Her already useless shoes were filled with water and covered wih mud. Anika hugged herself and stomped around the tent for a little while. But she knew she had no chance in finding her sister.
