Maddi woke up in her bed. There was soft talking outside her door and a loud chirping inside her room. Maddi sat upright, and the bluebird’s on her torso scattered around her room. Then settling down and watched her, tiny eyes almost seeming to be worried about her.
Maddi’s door opened and her mother rushed in. She gathered Maddi into her arms and held her for a long time. “What’s going on?” Maddi choked out. Her father came in next. “I think you should know. We found you half-drowned on the river bank.” Maddi stared at him. “And these birds sitting on you, as though they were trying to keep you warm.” Her mother added. “But who pulled me out?” Maddi asked her parents. They exchanged glances, “We don’t know. We thought you did.” Maddi started to push herself out of bed, but stopped when she noticed that it was dark out.
“How long have I been asleep?” She asked. “A couple of days.” Her father answered. Dread filled her stomach, she missed so much school and-
“Has there been anything on Dean?” She asked suddenly, riling up the birds again.
Her mother smiled softly at her. “We have been told that he is awake and coming home soon.” Maddi relaxed, and then smiled. “Now you rest, how about some chamomile tea?” Her mother asked, gently. 
Maddi nodded. She finally felt like something was falling into place now. Maddi watched her parents leave and her birds once again joined her.
“Thanks you guys.” She said, chuckling slightly. “You really helped me out there.” She rubbed Dean Jr's head slightly. Then laid back down, smiling up at the ceiling.
