Chapter 5
Maddi ran home as fast as she could. As she ran past the river she came to a slow. Soft singsong was echoing from the woods just past the river. Slowly trudging through the snow, she listened to the chirp of sad birdsong. The river had frozen over now, but she didn’t dare walk out onto it. Finding the old stepping stones that she and Dean used when they were younger, Maddi safely crossed.
She followed the noise of the bird and entered into a clearing. It was a winter wonderland! Snow glistened on the tree branches, partially covering the icicles that shimmered in the fading light. Not only that, but the chirping was loudest here.
Maddi searched for the source, remembering how Dean told her that some birds don’t migrate in the winter time. Maddi was about to give up when the chirping stopped. But before she could leave, there was a loud chirp behind her. Slowly, slowly she turned around and approached the rotted log on the ground.
‘I may not know much about birds, but I thought they lived in trees.’ Maddi thought to herself. She peaked into the log, and gasped loudly. She didn’t run, but the pretty birds did. Dashing out and flying to the lowest branches of the trees. They disappeared from her sight. Upset and shivering, Maddi began to make her way back to the river, following her footprints back to the bank.
