Only the Beginning

Team Alpha, in twenty-four hours I want you in my office to discuss your next mission, but as usual great job. As the agents leave, the director gives a leery glance to the case file that had been hastily hidden within his desk. He knew Alpha wouldn't let him down, after all they had been hand chosen to work for the FBI before they could even walk. There wasn't anything they couldn't handle: they were the perfect team after all. What worried him though, was what lied within perfection.

The four agents walked calmly back to their shared common room. At age 19 the four childhood friends had already graduated high school and started work at the FBI as special ops team. They all had different personalities but put them aside when it came to work. Now that they were off duty, the masks came off. The bouncy one of the group-Maddison looked like she was ready to explode. They had been on an exploration mission for about a month, and that was way too long to be serious, according to Maddison. Travis rolled his eyes at her antics, they may be working for the FBI but they sure didn't act like it. His mother had told him to have fun while he still could, but as long as there was evil in the world Travis wouldn't rest. It wasn't his fault for being like that, when he was five his father and twin sister were murdered in cold blood. He had sworn that he would personally start fixing the world or at least die trying. He did have personality, contrary to common belief: he just was more reserved than most. The resident jokester Xander, was practically bouncing alongside Maddison. The two of them may be crazy after hours, but on the field they were unstoppable. Terry put a firm hand on Travis's shoulder. He had zoned out in the middle of one Xander's crazy stories. He looked over at Terry and gave her a smile that seemed to say "I'm ok, but one more of these stories and I might face palm...with a wall." He knew Terry had gotten the message because her otherwise neutral face had a small smile that had a knowing and amused tone to it. Terry and Travis got along very well, probably because their personalities were so similar. Terry was great at reading people and Travis was perceptive in the way that he could read Terry and vice versa. They both had a cumbersome burden of looking after their more spontaneous teammates, but Terry handled it in a more caring way whereas Travis just made sure no one died. He would never admit it, but he cared about these people more than anything.
"And so then I threw the rock at him and said see ya later Rock Star!" Xander finished. At this point only Maddie was listening and that was only out of pity. Xander looked around and asked "Say where did the Grumps go?" He then had no answer as Maddie was now occupied with making dinner. Xander's smile faltered as he made his way to the computer lab that was on the bottom floor of the compound that housed the agents. He decided to continue working on the Anti-Malware technology he was developing to help the agency. He may be a goofball, but he's a useful goofball.

After dinner the team went about their normal pre-mission jitters. Xander went back to the computer lab, Maddie and Terry were in the weapons room, and Travis was in the gym making a punching bag regret being acquainted with his iron like fist.

That morning the agents woke up energized and ready to go. They scurried down to the directors office and sat rigidly as he began to brief them about their next mission.

"Team Alpha, this may be your most dangerous mission yet. We're sending you where no team has gone before and survived: The Briarwood Correctional Facility. This place has turned some of our best agents into basket cases, and you guys were our last resort. Your mission is to find and retrieve some files located in the establishment's basement. Those files contain some sensitive information that the owner wants back, and they're willing to pay a pretty penny for it. Pack your gear and get ready, you leave in an hour. Good luck Alpha, you'll need it."

Now that it was time for work, the masks come back on.

They had their bags packed and had loaded into the inconspicuous looking black van and headed down the gravel road to the Briarwood Correctional Facility. When they pulled up, the four scanned the premises. Travis couldn't help but wonder what was so bad about this place, but he had a premonition that they were going to find out soon. The Facility its self wasn't very big, two stories in total. The bricks that raggedly lined the outside were adorned with mold and were crumbling in some places. The yard was overgrown and if they didn't know any better they might have run into the poison ivy that was hidden like land mines within the tangles of weeds. The windows were rather boarded up or broken and the roof didn't look like it had much life left.

The four of them approached the small wooden door.

"Travis, what's the story of this place?" Madison asked knowing well that Travis had done his homework.

"The BriarWood Correctional Facility was built in 1857 and was a home for the mentally Ill. It was a place where a group of doctors had come together to try and "fix" their patients, but got shut down when they were found to be mentally abusing the patients alongside using very unorthodox methods to treat them. In order to prove their innocence they set fire to the place hoping to destroy the evidence. Luckily the fire didn't destroy much of the building, but many patients died in the process, even the doctors were slain."

"So what's the plan, we have to find those files right? The door's locked and the windows are inaccessible, unless you want to become Santa and go down the chimney there's no other way inside." Xander said in a sarcastic voice

They looked to Madison who was their lock picking expert. She gave an affirming nod and started picking the lock. In three seconds flat the lock fell off the door with a heavy thud. With a small smile she gestured for the rest of her team to enter the looming house.

Terry gently opened the door and turned her flashlight on: all she could see was dust and sheet covered furniture. For just a split second, she thought she saw something quickly duck down behind what she assumed to be an reception desk. She thought to her self "Must be rats". She gave the all clear and they all walked in.

Flashlights illuminating, they scanned the reception room in hopes of finding the door to the basement. While waiting on Terry to give the all clear, Travis had reminded them that the records were located in an office down in the basement. Xander went left, Maddie went right, while Travis and Terry were standing in the entry looking over a blueprint in order to find their target faster. Yes it wasn't wise for them to split up, but Travis thought it would be more efficient considering the blueprint wasn't the finest of qualities.

Someone must have gone upstairs because dust and who knows what else rained down from the ceiling. The roof began creak and moan and before Terry and Travis could process what was happening, the rusted chandelier came crashing down. Lucky for them Xander had seen it start to fall and had tackled them out of the way. Maddison ran down the staircase at the sound of the old chandelier making a new place for itself through the floorboards.

"What was that!" She yell-whispered.

Xander stayed wide eyed from his spot on the floor, while Travis helped Terry up. He gave one look at Madison and grunted.

"You could've killed us, be more careful when exploring this place. It doesn't seem to be very structurally sound."

She looked rather ashamed but she took his harsh words with grace. After that incident, they were a little more pretentious about moving about the facility.

"This was only the beginning of something more dangerous than they've ever seen before."
