Chapter One: The Start
I was about eight years old when my parents died. On Mom's death bed she told me about magic and that her and Dad belonged to one of many magical guilds. She also explained that because of that fact, it was the very reason they were persecuted and eventually killed. I thought she was crazy and that she was dying so, well, she was loosing her mind. At least until a few days later when I somehow ended up at their guild's head quarters.
Upon arriving here I've learned that my parents were indeed a part of the guild, however not magic wielders. No, they were historians and explorers.
They discovered that magic existed and were activly exploring lore and tales of magical artifacts and even magical beings. The guild found them and to keep these things out of the wrong hands they asked for their help. I had always wondered why they'd go away sometimes for days or even weeks, now I know.
As for me, I'm not much help to the guild, but they still treat me as family and had promised my parents to look after me. Not that I really make it hard for them, I just do my own thing and help out when I'm asked. Do you blame me though, would you stand up to someone with amazing magical abilities when you yourself don't have any?
That's right, they don't think I have or ever will have magical abilities because it's usually passed down from bloodlines and I have no magical reletives by blood. There are some exceptions like say a near death experience or special items, but the rarest is a magical user born from an all human family. There are only a few cases in centries where that has been reported.
You see a magic wielder can only do magic if that said person already has magic within him or her. A Human person cannot learn magic, no matter how hard they try or want it. A magical weapon will not work and spells they come across will not either. It's the sad truth, but I could never hope to become a true guild member. So when I turn 18 I am so out of this place, then I can be done with this torture.
"What are you thinking so hard about, Tyrian?" Naxos asked coming up to me as I was sitting at the corner table with my laptop. Naxos was obviously one of the guild members and happened to be around my age, about maybe 16 or 17. He was one of our Fire affinitive magic users.
"Just writing a paper for school and trying to decide what I should write," I lied and rubbed the back of my neck awkwardly with a small chuckle.
"Really? So you weren't day dreaming about Liv?" He asked pointing the direction I had be staring off into. And yep, Liv was there sitting with her friend Rowan.
"Oh come on, as if. You know I don't like anyone that way, Dude. Besides I told you I won't be sticking around here, that wouldn't be fair to anyone," I mumbled.
"Ah lighten up, Man. You only live once so what's a few broken hearts?" He asked with a sly grin. I rolled my eyes. Did I also forget to mention he was a big flirt and girl crazed? I mean honestly he's on a mission to date every girl in the guild and then some.
"Whatever, Dude. I heard Mara is coming back from her mission tomorrow, aren't you worried about her going out on missions like that?" I asked, refering to his younger sister who was only 12 years old. Don't get me wrong she is a good fighter and very skilled, but she's just a child all the same.
"You know it bothers me, but she's always got back up and can take care of herself. So who am I to stand in her way? I mean I'm her brother, but I'm not her Dad. I trust her judgement and respect her skill set," he said with pride in his eyes. I shook my head at him, he really is a weirdo. "Which reminds me, Captain wants to see you," he added as he started to walk away.
I closed my laptop and put it in my bag, before putting my bag on and heading up to the second floor to the Captain's office. The Captain is the head of our guild and a powerful Spell Caster. He's different from Naxos, he doesn't have an affinity to just one power and needs spells to tap into those abilities. Spell Casters are the most common magic user types. The others like Naxos are Ability types. There are a few sub catagories, but these are the main two.
I knocked and upon his instructions I entered. He stood to greet me, then we both sat. As we sat I of course asked him what he needed to see me about. Sighing he opened a file on his desk and looked through a few papers before setting it down.
"There has been a threat to our guild made by a Black Guild. I would like it if you took up some training with the Warriors, so if anything happens you can protect yourself at least a little. Before you say anything this is not a request, Son, it's an order," he said and my breath hitched in my throat. Is he serious?
"Sir, I - Yes, Sir, I will do my best," I said. He nodded and told me to go find Master Clayton Faraday, I'd start right away. I nodded stood and headed out. Well great, this is going to be humiliating. I'm not good at fighting, nor am I as smart as my parents were.
I found Clay sparing with Penelope. I apologized for my interruption and asked to speak with Clayton for a moment. He agreed and had her take a break for now. I hated this, but what other choice do I have? He wasn't one to go easy on you, I know that because a few years ago I wanted to be of some help to everyone so I asked him to teach me. The dude nearly chopped off my arm - No joke, I've got the scar to prove it - I rubbed my upper arm in memory.
"The Captain wants me to learn to fight, actually it was an order really. I guess some Black Guild made a threat and he wants me to be prepared," I mumbled.
"You gotta be kidding me. Doesn't he remember how horribly you failed the last time you tried that?" Issabell said from her sparring match a few feet away. I glared at her.
"No one asked you, and I have no choice, it was a direct order from the Captain," I said. I really didn't need her input when I already know that I suck.
"So, when do we start your training?" Clay asked serious as always. I sighed and told him the Captain wants us to start right away. He nodded and motioned for me to grab a sword. Shit he really means it? Infront of all these guys? Shoot me now. I looked up at the guild building and sighed. For the Captain, I guess I better try.
I grabbed a sword and then tried to remember what he taught me years ago about stance and form. He sighed and shook his head at me.
"Plant your feet, lift your elbows, and tighten your grip," he said and I adjusted myself accordingly. I'm not just a kid anymore, his words made more sense now than they did back then.
As he came at me with his own sword I swiped mine upward. When I heard and saw our swords meet we both took a surprised step back. This was much different than the first time he tried to teach me.
"That wasn't actually half bad, seems you've grown stronger and smarter in hanging around with us, Kid," he said taking his fighting stance again. I did the same.
"I'm not as frightened and nieve as I was then. Not to say I don't need work though," I said back. He nodded then lunged at me thrusting his sword forward. I dodged to the right and deflected his sword with my own. He launched his foot into my side and I swore as I hit the ground. He always plays dirty no matter in battle or training.
"That you do. Sword fighting is not always about the sword. It is close combat and when openings are made you take every one you can get," he said. He went to stab his sword down at me and I rolled out of the way. His sword hit dirt.
"You trying to kill me?" I asked surprised he had done that. He laughed and said he wasn't going to hit me, fatally. What was his deal, he have a grudge against me or something?
We spared a little more and then he called it quits for the day.
'I'm surprised I made it through that in one piece. Did he go easy on me?'
Last time we did this he nearly cut my arm off and told me he couldn't train someone as pathetic as I was. This time though he said I was to resume training tomorrow morning after breakfast.
'Maybe I won't be as useless to them, at least not completely.'
In my remaining two years I should do what I can to help them, but I am leaving no matter what. There is more out there for me than this tempting but unreachable world. To be honest it was torture knowing magic existed, but never being able to use it. Not to mention seeing it everyday for 6 years.
I haven't told Captain my plans to leave and honestly I don't want to until the time comes or he'll try to convince me to stay somehow and two years gives him plenty of time to do that. Actually, Naxos is the only one I told and he promised not to say a word, I trust him wholeheartedly because as dumb and loud as he is he's still a good and loyal friend.
I skipped Dinner since I was sure it got around by now that I was training and I really wasn't in the mood tonight to deal with that. Instead I actually got to work on that paper for school I really didn't even start yet. I fell asleep about halfway through my report.
