Responsibilities

I take my responsibilities seriously. After all, I'm in a position of trust. There isn't a day goes by that one of the building tenants doesn't come to me with something that needs fixing. They'll call me on the phone or - if they're one of the more friendly tenants - they'll knock on my door. Either way, the conversation is usually the same.

"Hey! Mr Veitch!"

I smile and nod. "Hey. What can I do for you?"

"I've got a problem."

So, I listen, work out what I need to do, get my tools and go.

Being in people's homes means I see a lot. Oh, the things I could tell you about what goes on in this building. But I don't gossip. It's not my place. So long as it ain't hurting nobody, then it's no business of mine. Sometimes, though, it just isn't that simple.

A while ago I had a knock on my door. It was one of the building kids, looking as scared as hell. I let him in and sat him down. He wanted to talk about something, but for some reason he couldn't. He just sat there shaking until his parents came for him. As they led him away, the kid turned to look at me. It was look of betrayal and despair.

A few days later, the kid's face was all over the newspapers. He had hung himself in a school bathroom.

I couldn't sleep after that. Every time I closed my eyes, I saw him looking at me, accusing me. He had trusted me. He had come to me with a problem, hoping that I would fix it, and I had done nothing. I had done worse than nothing. If I was ever going to sleep again, I was going to have to take a stand. So, I'm going to do what I should I have done: I'm going to take my tools and fix things.

Like I said, I take my responsibilities seriously.
