Chapter One

**Rough draft**

I sigh. Only a half-hour before my shift at Audrey – my foster mother's – daycare was over. And then Shana and I could have some downtime. For once.

Shana and I were best friends since my sophomore year of high school, which is technically two and a half years, but that girl is like a sister to me. But she works all day and lives farther away now that she's moved in with her boyfriend, Corbin. Personally, I think he's a douchebag, but you know how it is. Love is blind.

I was fantasizing about all the places Shana had promised we'd go: The boardwalk, the beach, the movies –

"Ms. Brea?"

My wonderful fantasies came to an abrupt end as I turned to see one of the daycare kids standing beside me, a book in his hand.

"Yes, Blake?" I ask sweetly. Despite the hardships of being around thirteen four-year-olds five days a week, Blake had to be my favorite- ever since I started working last year as a volunteer to look good on my college applications.

Blake had dark hair and had the purest green eyes ever. Even at the age of four, he had the other girls fight for whose turn it was to be his partner for pairing activities.

He stared at his feet, his dark brown hair covering his eyes as he said, "can you read this book to me?"

I take a look at the title of the book he has in his hand: The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. I grin and he hides his face with the book. Gosh, could this boy get any cuter?

We sit down on an empty section of the rug and sit close together so he can hear me read the book to him over the loud chatter of the other kids playing nearby.

"In the light of the moon, a little egg lay on a leaf," I began. "One Sunday morning the warm sun came up," I said, pausing to show him the image on the page, "and –pop!– out of the egg came a tiny and very hungry caterpillar."

The door to the daycare opened, the small bell atop if it making a twinkling noise to alert Audrey. I stopped reading to look up quickly, seeing a pair of black male professional shoes walk in.

I scoff mentally. Another over-the-top rich father trying to show he cared about his kid. It was pretty common here at the daycare.

"He started to look for some food," I went on with the book, "On Monday he ate through one apple. But he was still hungry. On Tuesday he ate through two pears, but he was still hungry. On Wednesday he ate through three plums but he was still hungry. On Thursday he ate through four strawberries but he was still hungry. On Friday he ate through five oranges but he was still hungry.

On Saturday he ate through one piece of chocolate cake, one ice cream cone, one pickle, one slice of Swiss cheese, one slice of salami–"

Blake was giggling now as I went on with all the food the tiny caterpillar ate, leaning into my knee to point and repeat the words I said.

I smiled and chuckled with him when footsteps approached us. One of them belonged to the pair of sleek black shoes I'd seen enter before and the other regular pink and black flats I knew belonged to Audrey.

"Daddy!" Blake yelled, jumping to his feet and hugging the man. I stood up, closing the book to take a look at Blake's father, whom I had never actually seen--because he never showed up. Blake always left at dismissal with a stoic guy with blond hair who drove away with him.

The man smiled genuinely – a beautiful smile really – as he lifted Blake into his arms, kissing his cheek. Maybe this guy wasn't so bad.

He was a head taller than I was - and at the most, six years older than me - with a head of lightly dusted brown hair, contrasting to Blake's dark locks. He had gorgeous blue eyes, which were just as bright as Blake's green ones. Despite his shocking good looks, I couldn't find any real resemblance between father and son.

"Brea, this is Mr. William Right," Audrey said, breaking me from my mental run-down of Blake's father, who seemed way too young to be a father of a toddler in my opinion. "He was looking for a babysitter for Blake and I recommended that you were a good candidate as Blake likes you."

Mr. Right held out a hand. "It is nice to meet you, Ms. Salistor."

"Likewise," I say, taking his hand to shake it. His grip was firm and his hand cool. It made my stomach flip.

"Would you care for the job, Ms. Salistor?" Mr. Right asked me.

Audrey motioned for me to accept the deal. We all knew from Blake's drawings of castles for "home" that he was rich beyond belief.

Be a babysitter to one of the richest men on Earth's son? There was no way I was saying no to that.

"I'd be happy to," I answer with a smile.

He returned the smile and kept his eyes locked on me for a little longer. It made my cheeks burn with all the attention he was giving me. When was the last time a guy looked at me like I was worth a million dollars?

"Blake," Mr. Right said, now looking at his son. "Ms. Brea is going to come home with us."

"Really?" Blake asked, his mouth open. I gave him a nod although I was so not ready for the job now. Shana didn't even know! "We can have ice cream," Blake continued excitedly, despite it being a cold February morning. "Double fudge with almonds, daddy's favorite!"

Audrey and Mr. Right smiled at Blake's words. Heck, double fudge and almonds sounded like heaven to my ears, too! I was one lucky gal.
