Chapter Three

*Rough Draft*

Halfway into the movie, my phone buzzes, granting me some annoyed looks from the people sitting around us. I glanced down at the number.

"Audrey?" I whispered.

"Hey, Brea. I just closed down the daycare and it looks like Blake is waiting for someone. Mr. Right isn't here yet, so I was thinking maybe you could take him home?"

"Got it." I ended the call and sigh. So much for movie night. "Shana, we gotta go."

"Huh? But I thought we were-"

"Would you guys shut up? Some people are trying to watch a movie here!" someone whispered loudly.

It was too dark to see who said it, but I scowl anyway. Sheesh. Shana and I fought our way to the end of the row, getting kicked here and there as we did. People really need to learn some manners.

Waiting outside for us was Pierre and his wonderful black limo. Shana made a dive for the seats while Pierre held the door open for us. I gave him a sheepish smile and mutter thanks before I duck in, immediately feeling relaxed by the cool leather seats, open space, and air conditioning.

"Brea, I am like, in love with this limo!" Shana squealed as Pierre shut the door.

"I'll tell Corbin you dumped him for a piece of metal on wheels," I tease, making her pout.

"But he'd totally understand," she added. "Just look at all this space!" She stretched her legs out onto the seats, barely coming halfway to where I sat by the window. "Oh! And look! We got T.V. too!"

She leans over to touch the screen just as the limo started moving. She yelped and grabbed onto the edge of the seating to keep herself steady. I chuckled, shaking my head.

After recovering from her fall, Shana ran a hand through her hair.

"Do I look okay?" she asked.

"Gorgeous," I answer, staring out at the darkening streets. Was it just me or did the neighborhood look different? Maybe living the high style does change the way you see things.

"Brea! You weren't even looking!" Shana complained. When I did face her, the limo came to a stop. Before I could open the car door to get out, someone from the outside did.

I stepped out –and even in faded jeans, an old sweatshirt, and worn sneakers– I felt like a movie star doing it. Shana stepped out behind me, quickly glancing down at her phone.

"Gotta run, Brea. Tell me everything later," she adds giving me a quick hug.

"Sure thing," I said, squeezing her before letting go. She smiled and walked down the street, putting on earbuds and shoving her hands into her pockets.

I shook my head, turning back to walk towards the daycare. Pierre was already there, opening the daycare's glass door just as I got there.

"You know you don't have to, Pierre," I said, smiling a bit. "It's not like you work for me or anything."

He bowed his head. "It's my pleasure."

"Ms. Brea!"

I let out a small "oof" when Blake jumped on me, grabbing a hold of my legs. Pierre chuckled and began walking back as I bent down to ruffle Blake's hair.

"Oh good, Mr. Right sent you then," I heard Audrey say. I looked up, seeing her walk over, keys in hand. "Ryan and I are going to be a bit busy with some financial things, so we won't be able to pick you up," she said, closing the door and locking it. "But I want you back before dinner, kay?" she brushed her lips to my head before walking away.

"Bye, Audrey!" I shout after her, feeling slightly shocked by her quick departure.

"Bye-bye Miss Nicholson!" Blake shouted as well, She waved a hand and continued on her way.

I looked back down at Blake, who I realized was holding my hand. I smiled.

"Let's go," he said, tugging my hand. "I have to show you my room!" He led me to the limo as if it were nothing new. Well then. Blake definitely had a head start on luxury.

When the limo began pulling onto the road, Blake began talking about everything that had happened at the daycare while I wasn't there. From orange juice spills to fights, he had it all. Thank my lucky stars I never had a full shift.

Pierre often commented during Blake's stories, and Blake would respond back. The two talked like old friends, and it was just so cute. The way Pierre made Blake laugh and how Blake would do the same to Pierre.

We all had our fair share of laughter by the time the limo rolled up into the Right's driveway.

After getting past the checkpoint, I tried not to gawk through the window at how huge the place was—and only two lived here! There were massive lawns, shrubbery, and fountains. The manor house looked ancient, in a good way, with several chimneys, glass windows, and balconies.

Once parked, Pierre nodded his farewell. Blake ran out into the cold air to greet someone standing outside the house. I walk after him, noticing the guy standing had just crushed something under his foot.

That guy turned out to be Mr. Right, in a business suit. Wasn't he cold? Blake was already in his arms by the time I got there.

"Welcome to my private estate, Brea," he said, smiling as if he was actually glad to see me here. "Is it alright that I call you that—Brea?"

"Yeah, sure."

Mr. Right opened his mouth to speak but Blake did instead. "Daddy! I'm hungry! I want ice cream now," he complained.

"You didn't have supper yet," Mr. Right replied, motioning with his head for me to follow him as he went inside. I hesitate just the slightest, glancing at the ground. A cigarette butt was crushed into the cobbled pathway.

I scrunched my nose in disgust. Mr. Right, you were now officially imperfect. And as Blake's babysitter, I was going to break that habit before Blake got sick from second-hand smoke and before Blake lost his dad to lung cancer.

While Mr. Right went on explaining where everything was with Blake interrupting occasionally to add some details about his personal experience with it, I was a bit distracted from what I'd just found out about Mr. Right. How was I supposed to get him to stop? He was definitely trying to be careful about not being seen. And what was I to him that he'd actually listen to my advice?

It wasn't until I saw Mr. Right put down Blake that I snapped back into reality.

"You seem distracted, Brea," he said casually, stopping to face me. I felt my face redden. Great, busted. "What's on your mind?"

"Everything," I said quickly. Seeing his eyebrows furrow just the slightest, I went on. "Y'know, this place is huge! It's so weird Blake knows every room and he's only four."

Mr. Right nodded, putting his hands in his pockets.

"So, how about I give you that tour I was talking about earlier?"

"Wait, what? Didn't you just–"

"Obviously you weren't paying attention," he said, growling a bit. I stared at him, speechless. Was he really upset I wasn't listening to him? "Can't have you lost when you're playing hide n' seek with Blake, now can we?" he adds, giving me a sidelong glance.

"Right."

There was an awkward silence as we stand there, looking at anything but each other. Then his phone chimed, breaking the tension. He looked down at the screen then back up at me.

"I'll have Pierre show you around then," he said quickly, sliding a finger across the screen, "we'll talk later." He turned away from me to take the call.

"Sure thing, Mr. Right," I said, trying to sound nonchalant, as I felt a stab of disappointment hit me. Like what was wrong with me? Obviously, I wasn't anyone important for him to miss a call for.

"It's Will," he corrected, over his shoulder.

I felt my lips tug into a smile.
