A single line of speech
"Hello, Lucy."
1. It is always capitalized.
2. Use a period to end the speech off.
Speech to an action
"Hello, Zoe," said Lucy, smiling.
1. Capitalize the beginning.
2. Use a comma once the speech finishes.
3. Do not capitalize the beginning of the action as it is a follow on from the speech.
4. Finish off the action by using a period.
Action to speech
Lucy smiled as Zoe replied, "hello Lucy."
1. When the action is finished, use a comma at the end to introduce the speech.
2. Capitalize speech if using a period to finish off action. Don't if you use a comma.
3. Once speech is over, use a period to end it.
Speech to action to speech
"Hello Lucy," she gave her a small smile. " The weather is pretty nice today."
"Hello Lucy," she gave her a small smile, " the weather is pretty nice today."
1. Introduce first set of speech by capitalizing it.
2. Finish the first set of speech using a comma.
3. Don't capitalize the follow on action.
4. Introduce the second set of speech using a comma.
5. If you use a period to finish off the action, start the second speech off with capitalization.
5.5 If you use a comma to finish off an action, start the second speech off without capitalization.
6. Finish off the second set of speech with a period.
Speech to action with a question / exclamation mark.
"How are you, Lucy?" she said, while sitting next to her.
1. Do not capitalize first action if using a q/e mark.
