For me, this was one of the better episodes of the entire final season. 

Tension, tension, tension.

The growing tension surrounding the army of the dead is finally at its greatest point, with the Night King due to arrive anytime. Nearly every one of our beloved characters is gathered in Winterfell for the final showdown between the living and the dead.  

Daenerys and Sansa have a bit of a chat. It starts off well but soon becomes clear that Sansa never plans to bend the knee to Dany. They are interrupted, just as Dany deliberately slides her hand away from Sansa's, leaving the matter to be played out, only if they survive the battle against the Night King. 

Good for you, Sansa! About time you learned the game.

Arya getting it on with Gendry was a bit of a shocker, but made sense, given the dire situation. I'd probably have fucked him too if I thought we were all going to be dead by morning. Still, it was a bit weird to see Maisie Williams strip down on camera because I still think of her as the tomboy from episode one, chasing after her brothers and swinging swords when no one is looking.

The real fun was in the scenes with Tyrion, Jaime, Brienne of Tarth, Tormund Giantsbane, and Podrick Payne, all sitting around, getting drunk, speaking truth, singing songs, and knighting the first woman in the kingdom's history—Ser Brienne of Tarth, Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Podrick's song he sings and the way they used it, felt like a nod to the scene in Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, where Pippin sing's to Denethor while Faramir is presumably dying in battle.  

The real tension was when Jon finally tells Daenerys the truth about their unfortunate relationship, only for her to doubt it's the truth, then the horns sound, announcing the arrival of the undead army. Time's up for the people of Westeros and the fate of Winterfell will, no doubt, determine the fate of them all. Nice way to leave us hanging.
