Classmates

"Everyone, please welcome Sherry Fusae as your new classmate from now on." Mister Michael Connor, the adviser of this class, introduced me in front of more than 20 students. I'm too lazy to count them.

"Good morning." I casually greeted. I can feel their eyes on me. Although I admit that I feel a lot of unnecessary pressure, I still need to keep up my poker face. For someone like me, this is a piece of cake!

"You can sit beside that guy in the hoodie there, whose seat is far back, next to the window." Michael pointed at the oddly specific place.

As I am walking towards the empty seat, I can hear gossip from the tables I pass by, whispering about how they didn't even notice the guy seated there. I can make a guess why no one dared to sit next to this guy. Well, it's not like he's dangerous to the point where my life will be in danger, so I guess it's fine.

"Sherry, right?" A girl in front of me asked with great curiosity and excitement.

"Ah... Yes..."

"Japanese, right?"

What's with this girl? Why is she asking me these things? Is she trying to see through me?

"Yes. Half."

"I'm glad you're able to fit in this country so quickly." She's sarcastic, but her tone of voice is straightforward and blunt. I can guess that she just has a sharp mouth, but not a bad guy.

"Well, actually I lived here my whole life, so it's not that surprising at all." I faked a small laugh.

"Is that so? Which school did you previously go to?"

"From--"

The bell rung, interrupting my answer. In this way though, I take it that she doesn't need to ask me about more unnecessary information, right?

Going to the library after school is such a rare thing to do nowadays. I can't believe there are still libraries in schools. I'm guessing that no one comes here anyway, might as well savor the feeling of reading things about murders and killings that no teacher wants to teach about.

I took a book about the subject that I wanted, and started flipping through the pages. While doing so, a person accidentally bumped into me, making me drop the book I was holding.

"In Cold Blood by Truman Capote. You like these kinds of stories?"

Instead of an apology passing through my ears, what is this, describing the book that I just dropped because of him!

"Ah yeah. Before you look at my book, maybe you should pick up one about manners."

"Simon Noyce." He bends down to pick up In Cold Blood from the floor and handed it to me. "That's my name. Nice to meet you." Afterwards, he just walked away with his hands in his jacket pockets, not even turning back to me.

What's with this guy? Not only did he not apologize for bumping into me, but he also ignored me!

More importantly, why was he in the library? Judging from the dusted books from everywhere, and the empty desk where the librarian should be, this library would be renovated. Anyway, I just stopped by to get a quick glimpse of a book.

"Fusae... right?"

One step away from the bookcase and I hear a familiar voice from behind me call me out. I turned to look, and in my line of view is the girl with the sharp mouth. Now that I think about it, I never asked for her name yet.

"Yes. And you?"

"Jane... Mary Jane Monroe." She calmly stated. "Were you there for a long time? I also saw Simon here."

"Ah, that hooded guy. He bumped into me earlier."

"I see..." She shyly covered her face with the book she was reading... which is... an encyclopedia?... Why...?

With a smile on my face, and curiosity dawning me, I decided that I will go home later today.
