Jealousy
I see Jane with my bag by the school gates. I walked towards her, not calling her out, but she seemed happy to see me nevertheless.
"Were you there the whole time?" I asked, taking my bag from her hands. Her grip is very loose, and it seems like she's focusing on something else.
I took a glance from where she was looking. Through the window, I see an empty seat. Judging by the architecture of this school, that's the seat of my seatmate! Just a few minutes ago, he was looking through the very same window. So he was looking at Jane, huh.
"Don't you have to go home early today?" I tried to lighten her up a bit. When she's looking at the empty seat by the second floor window, her eyes are dull and dead. She was in deep thought, and for some reason, whatever she was thinking about, it drains her of all possible positive emotions that she has.
"Say, Sherry." She suddenly blurted out, barely moving her lips. "Simon is really caring, you know that?"
"Caring?!" I shouted in shock and confusion. "That guy was sticking his nose in other people's business! I just sighed, and he just has to move his freaking lips to complain about my snoring and he said that he tried to wake me up, called me a ghost girl, and troublesome! What's caring in that?!"
"You might not know about this, but..." She stopped midway, glancing yet once again at the empty window. "Through the whole time you're sleeping, he just quietly put his jacket over you and fended people who were trying to wake you up off. He said those words because he doesn't know how to openly express his feelings so... Don't think badly of him. He's not what he acts to be."
I just stood on the ground, the breeze hitting our hair and clothes. I'm speechless. I don't know how to react to that. If I should be grateful to him or stay away from him. Because the way Jane tells me this is... kind of telling me to "stay away" from him. She's possessive, but keeps a calm facade in front of me.
"You know him so well, Jane." I commented. She merely nodded in acknowledgement.
"I may be insensitive to you, but can you... not spend time with Simon? I'm getting jealous..." She meekly requested. She was being meek and humble, but she's asking me for something out of my control. It's not that I intentionally bump into him anyway.
I want to ask her more about her dangerous emotion called jealousy, but I can't move my mouth. I feel like it has been stapled shut. I can't agree to her request, nor I can disagree.
So I decided to just shrug it off. "I think you're being unreasonable because you're tired. You've been waiting for me all this time, right? Come now, come now." I took her by the shoulder and led her out the school gates. I notice she's pale and dull. "Hey now, you can't reprimand people for being pale when you're pale yourself. Go home and rest well, okay?" I smiled, waving at her as we bid goodbye. She smiled at me, albeit faint and forced.
I hope she's going to be okay. It's expected for her to become irrational and unreasonable, but seeing her become scary in a way is something even I cannot tolerate...
"Oh Ghost Girl, you're still here." A voice surprised me from behind.
I quickly turned my heel. I see two students in front of me: Bill, who's always smiling and carefree, greeting everyone who passes by, and behind him is the hooded Simon who doesn't interact with any other people.
"Bill... You're friends with Jane, right?" I stared right through Bill's eyes.
"That's right!" He beamed.
"Can I ask you something?" I took him by the arm and walked away from Simon. But Simon continued to follow Bill wherever he goes. Although he understands that I wanted to talk to him privately so he put up a distance of 3 feet away.
"What does Jane feel about Simon?"
