Chapter 4

"Quick," Jess said, "out the back!"

We stumbled over to the sliding glass door that opened to our back yard, pushing it open as we heard more wood splintering off the front door.

I looked back just in time to see the door collapse under the weight of at least 15 bodies, all of which were filling the house like dark lava under the sickening yellow lights we had on inside.

Jess held my arm to steady me as we stumbled around the blackened yard. I felt something collide with my shin, but couldn't bring myself to care.

The people inside were now attempting to right themselves and follow us out back. I held back my vomit at the fact that we didn't close the door on our way out.

"Throogh... the gahe!" I managed to spit out between heavy breaths.

Jess didn't respond, but she must've heard me, because we changed our course to move towards the gate around the house that led to the front.

"What if they're in the front too?" Jess asked, hesitating long enough for someone behind us to scream bloody murder.

We turned around to see that the people were now inches away from us, reaching out their arms in an attempt to latch onto us.

We both ran towards the gate, not even worrying about what may be out front. We reached the gate, slamming it closed and into one of the first of them that reached us.

After learning my lesson with the back door, I made sure to close the gate, noting dejectedly that it was slick with some kind of cold fluid.

My guess? Blood.

I backed away from the chain link, watching as the woman that'd caught up to us rammed her body into it once again. She didn't seem to know how it opened, but surely the gate wouldn't last long with the way it was rattling. And there was no way in hell it would last with the others now catching up.

Jess pulled me from my thoughts and around the house where, luckily there didn't seem to be any more of those people. Our hopes weren't lasting ones, however, as a few stragglers from inside noticed us and started towards the door.

Grabbing Jess by the sleeve of her shirt, I pulled her towards the car. I opened it and jumped in, shooting over to the driver's seat. Jess managed to slam the door on the first person to reach us.

We both took heavy breaths as more of the crazed people surround the car, banging on the glass.

"It'll break," Jess stated between breaths. "Please tell me you have an extra key in here."

"I gaave iito daad..." I said looking down.

"Well then we need something to fight them, or distract them..."

Wait... I reached in between the crack of the seat slinging my arm further than I expected to, fishing for the flash of green that had caught my attention. Jess gave me a puzzled look, opening her mouth as if she were about to ask a question. She didn't have a chance though, because I pulled the familiar green lanyard that held my keys from between the seat.

Jess smiled brightly, then frowned grimly as a loud crack drew our attention back to the windows where the crazed people had created a large splinter across the glass.

I hurriedly shoved the key into the ignition, fumbling to start the car as the passenger window started producing shards.

The car finally started and I somehow managed to put it in reverse and speed out of the driveway. Thank God it was an automatic.

The figures spilling out onto the street started to fade, and I tried my best to calm myself. The car was swerving dangerously close to the edge of the road. Though I couldn't feel it moving.

"Watch out!" I swerved, barely missing a truck that had been parked horizontally along the road.

The car screeched to a halt in the same position just inches from the abandoned truck.

"Are you still drunk?" Jess asked, looking at me worriedly.

I nodded, and pain started dully throbbing inside my head.

My brain couldn't decide if it was looking into a kaleidoscope or not. I leaned back the seat, trying to let it clear. This is why I don't drink.

Jess made me get out of the car after that. In a matter of a few minutes she had the wheel an we were off again.

"W-he ere're e goin?" I managed to slur out.

My vision was hazing between the motion of the side of the road and plain darkness. Eventually Jess figures out the fact that the car lights were still in working order and flicked them on. The road illuminated out in front of us, brightening the several bodies roaming around outside and the tons of crashed vehicles all the way down the highway. Jess slowed noticeably, though we weren't going so slow as to let the wandering bodies catch up to us.

"I don't know." Jess sounded helpless, "Maybe we should go to mom's work. O-or maybe dad's..."

Jess started tearing up, shaking her head as if to clear it.

"Mah-be weshoo..." My eyes drooped, and a whirl of nausea came crashing through my stomach like the flood that made Noah famous.

"What?" Jess looked at me with what I could only image must've been confusion, if my head hadn't been pounding that is.

"Gremeh..." My speech was so far gone at that point that I couldn't even pinpoint what I was trying to say.

Jess looked like she was nodding, but I could hardly even register my surroundings. Everything was spinning, fading. Jess may have been saying something, but I couldn't hear her anymore. All I have were blips of what may have somewhat been the drive, along with some flashes of people pounding on the windows. Eventually the flashes were gone too and all that was left was the cool black oblivion of unconsciousness.
