Tawnysplay's pelt glistened as she passed through dapples of light underneath the roofed forest. She stopped beside the lake with a sigh, gazing down at her reflection. She barely recognized the grieved and stressed face looking back at her. A growl rumbled in her throat.
"I just wanted a normal life! With my family, but now I have to deal with this?" she growled, slashing a paw of unsheathed claws into the water, tearing her reflection through ripples as fish scales glittered as they sped away from the paw.
"Tawnysplay.... are you okay?" Tawnysplay recognizes the soft voice of Lynxfade.
"Yeah!" She reponded hurriedly, standing up and turning to face the brown she-cat. "I'm just... still a little shocked over my family's death."
Lynxfade padded up beside her, drawing her dark brown tail over Tawnysplay's sandy and black shoulders. Tawnysplay's response was a sigh.
"I know you're still grieving, but it'll feel better in time. I don't expect you to forget them, none of us will, but you'll get used to it and learn to be okay with them being with you in spirit," Lynxfade mewed comfortingly, her yellow eyes glowing with warmth.
"Thanks, Lynxfade," Tawnysplay mewed, placing her tail over her paws as her yellow eyes lit a bit more.
"I'll take your offer." Tawnysplay was taken aback at the strength of the flame of happiness that sprang into Mapleshade's amber eyes.
"Good," the ghostly she-cat mewed. "Your first 'level'." She let her amber gaze drag over Tawnysplay's family before she struck a paw forward to grab a gray tortoiseshell with markings of silver and sandy yellow out of the line. The gray tortoiseshell gave a hiss, defiance in her green eyes.
"Burrstrike for Stormsong," Mapleshade purred, her voice dripping with sugar-coated malice. The tortoiseshell drew her claws over Tawnysplay's sister's shoulder, red blood welling underneath at the shallow drag, as if to show Tawnysplay what would happen to Stormsong if she denied the task.
All Tawnysplay could do was nod, feeling too sick and weak from distress to speak.
The brown spotted tabby's back was turned, unknowing if the gray, black, and sandy yellow pelt slinking from the shadows. Tawnysplay held her breath as she headed towards Burrstrike, her claws unsheathing. Her eyes were distressed but she leaped, landing on the toms shoulders and receiving a yowl of surprise, cut off shortly after as the head splashed under water. Tawnysplay held strong as Burrstrike thrashed beneath her, trying to get air in his lungs.
"I'm sorry!" she wailed, her tail lashing behind her as she felt the body go limp.
She backed off, her yellow eyes dark with sorrow and guilt as she looked upon the body. The body was out of the water mainly, but the head with its clouded and distant green eyes looking up from the water as if sending a plea to the clouds for help. With a whimper Tawnysplay grabbed Burrstrike's sodden scruff in her teeth and dragged him further into the lake to hide his corpse and, if it where to float back, wash her scent off. She ran back to the shore and shook out her pelt before running back Intro he forest, skipping past ThunderClan camp as she ended at the WindClan border. Her pelt fluffed and her yellow eyes were glazed with terror at what she'd just done. 'I didn't know I had that in me...'
"Good job," Mapleshade mewed, her voice still dripping with the same sugarcoated malice. She swished her thick-furred dark ginger tortoiseshell tail behind her. She looked across the line again and began pulling another pelt from the line, but Tawnysplay interrupted her.
"I killed Burrstrike for you, why is Stormsong still here?" she hissed, pointing her muzzle at the gray tortoiseshell, still with the rest of her family.
"I said I wouldn't kill them, I never said I'd let them go. Once you either finish or stop I will let the ones you won back go," Mapleshade purred, her amber eyes sparkling.
Tawnysplay made her hackles flatten and listened as Mapleshade continued to pull out another gray tortoiseshell from the group, whose yellow eyes were defeated. The she-cat didn't struggle in Mapleshade's grasp.
'Smokeflare.'
