Darren

I'm miserable. My Parents died not even two months ago, and they're already making us go back to school.   A New school, I might add. In the dead middle of the year. In the dead middle of nowhere. Sure, I've liked school in the past. It's always came pretty easy to me. It just doesn't seem that important right now. Maybe it never will again. Anyways, I can't get any justice for my parents' death. It was a drunk kid a little older than me who ran a red light and is going to pay for it for the rest of his life. There's nothing I can do. There's nothing I could've done. It's happened. This nightmare is now my life. And on top of it all, I've got to hide myself from the whole world. Well, not completely. I just can't let anyone see the parts of me that are potentially "problematic". Like the part of me that can see through solid objects. Or Bench Press my grandpa's truck. Or run to New York and back in three seconds flat. Just hide all of that. Shove it under the rug like it's not there; like it's not a big deal. Like it isn't a part of me. Just go on, make straight A's like I always have, and don't draw any further attention to myself. Or I could do something else. I could say: Screw that. I'm gonna do whatever the hell I want because nothing matters to me right now. And That's my plan for going back to school tomorrow.

I slept through my alarm, and my grandma's first three calls from downstairs telling me to get up, and my grandpa's call telling me to get the hell up. After about three minutes after they realized I uttered no response, my grandpa came barging into my room with a bucket of water. I got up, and I started to move out of the way. To me, he was almost stationary as I hopped out of bed, frozen in a lunging position, bucket extended and water droplets coming from it, frozen in the air above my bed. As I looked at him, frozen, from the other side of he room I had escaped to, it occurred to me that he doesn't know about my powers, and seeing me disappear from my bed and reappear on the other side of the room may alarm him. So, I ran back into bed, shut my eyes, and braced myself for the coming downpour. I laid still as the water rained onto my face.
"What the hell, Steve?!" I said, and shook my head in an attempt to rid myself of some of the water now dripping from my hair. I hadn't really known my father's parents until he died. We had only visited them like three times, so I wasn't quite comfortable with calling him "grandpa". Plus I'm adopted, it's technically not right anyways. I'm just going to stick to calling him Steve for now.
"We told you to get up five times!" Steve yelled.
"Four." I corrected. He scowled, but essentially ignored my remark.
"You're not gonna be late for your first day. Now Up and at 'em!" He fired, and slammed the door as he walked out. I sighed, and did as he asked, but this time, I didn't hesitate to use my super speed. I was completely ready in seconds. I checked my phone. 7:10a.m. The bus was supposed to be here in five minutes, so I had time to eat breakfast. I walked downstairs and arrived in the kitchen as Steve descended into his assigned chair at the dining table. His eyes widened as soon as he saw me. Shit, I didn't really think that through, did I? He was in my room about twenty seconds ago... I decided it'd be best if I avoided the situation altogether and just left, so that's what I did. I skipped breakfast and greeting the grandparents and joined Mara on the sidewalk outside the house to walk to the bus stop. She apparently woken up pretty early. Her hair was curled and she had a full face of makeup on, along with a decently nice outfit. I looked like I just rolled out of bed. And I pretty much did. I wasn't trying to look good. I looked like I felt. Like trash. She glanced at me, her face void of emotion.
"So you just want to look like shit for your first day?" She asked.
"Yep. I going for the whole "I don't give a shit about my appearance because my parents just died" kind of look." I replied. Mara stopped. I kept walking.
"Darren" She said. I turned around .
"We've talked about this." She said.
"Like hell we did." I mumbled.
"Look, if you want to talk about it more, that's fine with me, if it'll help." Mara said, and started walking again.
"Talking isn't gonna help. Nothing is. They're dead Mara." I stated. The bus started pulling up from the far end of the street. I stopped just shy of the sign that marked the bus stop. After a few seconds of silence, so did Mara. The bus pulled up to the stop in a few more. We boarded the bus in silence, and went to sit on opposite ends of it. I selected an empty seat towards the back of the bus. Mara sat at the seat closest to the driver. The bus was pretty crowded, but I didn't pay much attention to the type of characters it was filled with, and ignored the strange looks I got from them. I sat down, put my book bag beside me to take up the other end of the seat, and fished my phone out of my pocket. I turned my music on with the lowest volume setting (because I didn't have earphones), blocked everything out, and focused on the quietest sound on the bus. I listened to about forty seconds of Green Day before I heard Mara whisper.
"I'm hurting too, Darren." She said. There was a pause. The bus stopped.
" I know. What I don't know is how you're going on like nothing happened." I whispered back.
"I'm not. But If I can't move on, it's going to be like they're dying all over again. Every minute of every day." She whispered.
"If you-" I started to whisper back, but a girl hovering above my seat cut me off.
"Hey, do you mind if I sit with you?" She asked. "All the other seats are Taken." She added. She has brown hair and blue eyes. Her skin is very pale, and she was thin. Her nose was a bit too big for her face, but she was pretty nonetheless.
"I guess not." I said, this time audible to someone other than Mara, and moved my bag down to the floor.
"Thanks." She said, and smiled. For whatever reason, I smiled back.
"So, you're new here?" She asked. I'm fairly sure she knew the answer.
"Yeah. From Edge City." I shared, and maintained eye contact, which is something I haven't done while talking to anyone in this town so far.
"City boy, huh?" She asked. "I've lived here my whole life." She explained. I hadn't paid attention to what she was wearing, but that statement made me. She was wearing a red and black flannel, blue jeans, and cowboy boots.
"No kidding." I said, with a bit of a snicker. She gave me a mock glare, and then smiled.
"I wouldn't be saying anything about what anyone is wearing if I were you." She said, and returned a bit of a snicker. I forgot. Trash. I smiled.
"What's your name?" I asked, changing the subject.
"Katie." She said.
"Of course it is." I mumbled.
"I'm Darren."
