Mara
The bus finally pulled up to school. I had been stuck sitting beside this girl with an affinity for black and making people uncomfortable, so I was glad to get off. At least Darren wasn't miserable on The bus ride. I hopped off as soon as they opened the door, and made my way straight to the counselor's office to receive my revised schedule. I had already toured the school a few times, just so I would know where everything was. The school is surprisingly big for how small of a town Smallville is. I ignored all the strange looks I got while walking to the main building. I knocked on the door to the counselor's office, and checked my watch. 7:40 a.m., five minutes until the first bell.
"Come in!" I heard someone call from the other side of the door. I opened he door, and walked in. The Counselor was a middle-aged woman with light brown hair, light skin, and a petite frame. She looked up at me and smiled, and I returned it.
"Am I wrong to assume you're Mara?" She asked.
"No ma'am. I am. I came to get my new schedule." I explained.
"I know. I've got it right here." She said, and pulled something out of one of her desk drawers. She walked over and handed it to me. It was almost silly how she looked next to me, being 5'9. She was staring at me. I took the schedule with a smile.
She was still staring, but I don't think it was because of my unusual height.
"Thank you." I said, and turned around and left before she could say anything to me. I walked into the hallway and located my first class. PreCalculus. With Darren. No one was in the building until the bell rang a few seconds after I made my way to the door of my first period classroom. The door was open. I went in and smiled at the lady sitting behind her desk with a coffee cup in her hand. She looked young, but sleep deprived. She had tanned skin, dark hair, and dark eyes, and I really couldn't tell her ethnicity. She looked up me lazily, and forced a smile. "You're one of the twins right?" She asked, not looking up from her computer. "Someone mentioned you at the conference this morning." She explained.
"Yes I am." I said needlessly. "I'm Mara." I added.
The teacher glanced up at me and her eyes widened for a minute. She blinked a few times. "I'm Mrs. Davenport." She stated. There was a short pause.
"Well you came at a pretty good time during the year." She said. "We finished Chapters One to Five last semester, so you won't have to start in the middle of a lesson. You'll be on an equal playing field with everyone else." She added.
"Well that's good." I said, unenthusiastically, and another kid walked in and took his seat, eyes glued to me the whole time.
"Oh, there's a seat open in the very corner of the room." She said, pointing to a seat. "This is a really big class." She explained. I walked to the back of the class and took my seat as students poured into the classroom, all looking at me as if I was some sort of alien. Everyone got settled into the class within a span of about two minutes. I could hear them all whispering throughout the class. They were all talking about my hair color. Wondering if it was dyed, some idiots wondering if I'm albino, and some just making terrible jokes. My hair is naturally a very bright platinum blonde. Darren's is too. Wait. Where the hell is Darren? He has PreCal first period too!
"Darren." I barely whispered. No Answer. I know he can hear me; he just isn't listening. There were still eyes on me. The teacher had returned to her desk and was doing something on her computer. I don't like this, but it's to be expected. I'm still thinking about Darren. What could he be doing? I saw him not ten minutes ago! I listened for his voice throughout the school. I only heard his laugh and—Oh God! He's making out with the girl he was talking to on the bus. In the hallway. In front of everyone who hasn't yet gotten to class. Terrific. I was still listening, and heard a man's voice. He sounded younger than my grandpa but still, sounded older. "What the hell do you two think you're doing?!" He asked, outraged. Darren laughed again.
"Alright Class!" Mer. Davenport said, so loudly that it left a ringing in my ears. She continued talking at the same volume and I adjusted my hearing. She was talking normal, I was just listening way too hard.
I snapped out of listening to Darren and gave my full attention to the teacher. I got out my notebook, my calculator, my textbook, and my pencil.
"Turn to Page 417. Let's get out of this Christmas break haze." Said Mrs. Davenport. Just then, we heard a very loud knock on the door. Mrs. Davenport walked across the room to open it. It was the Principal, standing behind Darren who had pulled his hoodie up to cover every inch of hair on his head. He gestured for Darren to walk into the class, and he did. "I believe this one belongs to you, Mrs. Davenport." He said angrily, and walked off, letting the door close behind him. Great, Darren broke the rules and pissed off the principal within the first fifteen minutes of school. If that's any indicator of how today is going to go, I'd assume it's not going to be a pleasant first day. Darren didn't have his backpack with him. Where'd he put it?! Darren stood in the middle of the room with a smug look on his face.
"What the hell?" I barely whispered. He glanced at me, but didn't say anything.
"And you're the other one, huh?" Mrs Davenport asked.
"Yeah that's me. The other one." Darren said theatrically.
"Where's your book?" Mrs. Davenport asked. Darren is still just standing in the middle of the room.
"Not here. Obviously." Darren replied. The teacher brushed off his response.
"How do you plan on doing PreCal without a book?" She asked, patiently.
"I plan on doing it in my head." Darren fired back, a little too proudly. The dude is extremely book smart, but he's a dumb ass when it comes to common sense.
"Yeah right, we'll see about that." She said. "You'll have to sit at one of the computers until I can get you a desk." Mrs. Davenport added, and features to the computers. Darren walked across the room, not looking at anyone, and sat down at a computer.
"Darren, right?" She asked. Darren looked up at her. She looked slightly annoyed. "Take off your hood. They're not allowed indoors." Mrs. Davenport Stated.
"No thanks, I'm good." Darren refused. The class of AP Kids looked mortified.
The teacher glared at him. He snarled, sighed and flipped his hood back.
