Chapter 12. First time I cooked

Abiola's POV

"Can't you just wait for some hours more?" I asked Tobi helping Tope fold her clothes. I take back what I said about him being a good big brother, he's just so annoying. It was Sunday and he had come to pick her up. My mom isn't home, if not, he would have gone back home without her.

"No, I have somewhere to be and something to do." He replied not sparing me a glance. I glared at him since he wasn't looking and just then, he looked up. He caught me again. "You can stop glaring at me now." He added.

"You said you have somewhere to be, why can't she just stay, you can pick her up when you're done?" I asked.

"You just like arguing. I said no, she coming with me." I gave up asking and slumped on the chair, before sitting down properly, like the adult I am.

We finished folding her clothes for her and she was set to leave. She gave me a look saying, 'save me'. I shrugged my shoulders. I couldn't do anything, considering Tobi and I aren't anything close to friends. So I couldn't help her. We hugged while Tobi took her bag to his car. She collected my number and didn't show me what she saved it as, making me laugh.

"If you see what I used to save it, you'll delete it and my brother would kill me." I looked at her.

"What did you use?" Knowing she won't tell me with the look on her face, I walked away.

After some minutes, they were a settled to go. I leaned on the car window, thank God he used his car.

"You know, I thought you were a good big brother, but you're just annoying. She has been the younger sibling I never had and you're taking her away. Just like that." I said, thinking he would have. A change of heart, I forgot I was speaking to a robot.

"Are you done?" Ouch!

"Yes!" I moved back, before going back again. "Ok, when will she come again? This time she'll stay longer." I said the last part with a tone of finality. As if, if he said no, there's something I could do.

"We'll see about that." I pecked Tope on the cheek and waved as he pulled out of the main gate. He likes acting as if he's her father. Well technically, he is. But still.

Whenever he's around me, I just don't know what stupid feeling that keeps on stirring around and inside me. It's becoming annoying. I can't definitely tell Konyii, the bad minded girl would think something else.

Except it is something else.

I walked back inside and remembered my dad was coming back today. It's been long his princess cooked for him. I remember the first time I cooked, I was 13. It was horrible, terrible, horrific in fact.

FLASHBACK

"Mummy don't come to the kitchen, if you do, I'll lock you in your room. Daddy you too." What should I cook? I rummaged through the drawers and cupboards in the kitchen. Then I decided to cook my dad's favorite. Jollof rice.

I remember my mom always using tomatoes and peppers. So I opened the refrigerator for vegetables and brought it out.

"What are you doing?" Kiki, my favorite out of the rest asked, scaring me.

"I want to make daddy's favorite." I stood crossing my hands.

"Do you even know how to boil water?" She asked mocking me.

"Kiki, stop. I'm going to prove everyone wrong today, you know mummy and daddy doesn't let me in the kitchen." She nodded her head.

"Let me help you then."

"No, I can do it myself." I held her hand that tried collecting the bowl of peppers and tomatoes.

"Kiki, let her do what she wants." My dad's voice boomed around the house, making me smile in victory.

"You can go now." I smiled innocently. She bobbed her head and left.
I picked a pot from the pot cabinet and filled it with water, I didn't measure it. I decided to remove the head of the peppers and tomatoes when I was done I cut them and put them all in the blender, added little water and closed it. I turned on the blender to full speed, making me and the blender vibrate. I removed my hands immediately and the blender fell and broke. Peppers splattered every where on the white walls of the kitchen.

"What is that?!" My mom shouted.

"Nothing!" I screamed back. I used the pepper hand to itch my eyes, immediately, my eyes started burning me badly. "Ahhh daddy, my eyes!" I screamed. I heard footsteps running towards my direction.

"Mogbe, what do I tell you? Don't enter here, you don't listen." While she was rambling my dad was already trying to get me to stop itching my eyes with the same hand. Finally they could get the pepper out but of course not all. Then we heard the smoke detector going off. My dad and the maids quickly tried to get it to stop, while my mom dragged me to the sitting room.

"If you stand up from here, your dad wont save you from me." My mom threatened, even though I knew it was empty. I stayed, I've caused enough damage for a day.

After two hours of cleaning the mess I made, my dad came out holding my mom's waist.

"We aren't letting you into the kitchen anymore, never. Even if you need water, call someone."

I didn't go into the kitchen for one whole year, until the next when I could go in for five minutes tops, till I was 16.

End of flashback

I smiled remembering what had gone down that day. I snapped out of it when Konyii yawned while stretching.

"Thinking of Tobi already, I see. He hasn't even gone up to an hour, you're already missing him. Alright." She smirked looking at me.

"Who told you I was thinking of him, you just have a bad mind." I rolled my eyes and went over to the gas cooker. "What do we cook? I feel like cooking for daddy today."

"Fried rice or Jollof rice, it would be better if you cooked the two. And Turkey wings, make it crunchy." I looked at her, I should cook that much.

"It's like you're not ok." I hissed. "I'm cooking only one." I went over to the pots cupboard and brought out a big one.

"Your dad likes jollof, your mom likes fried. Cook both joor." Konyii said picking up one of the cereals in the cabinet.

"Come and cut carrots then," She looked at me and rolled her eyes. "Lazy child." I brought out most of the things I needed and just then, a maid walked in.

"Good afternoon ma." It wasn't the maid of the last time.

"Please, come and help me chop these veggies, I want to make fried rice. Since we have a very useless human here."  I said pouting my mouth towards Konyii. The dark skinned melanin, a little shorter than me, nodded her head.

"When you're done insulting me, you can go on with your work." She hissed. I just rolled my eyes and continued what I was doing.

We chopped all ingredients we needed, from carrots to spring onions to other stuffs. Konyii decided to be a little useful and helped to bring out the Basmati rice. I per boiled it a little, then sieved it and poured water inside the same pot, adding a little curry so it doesn't get too yellow. Added maggi powder and little salt with thyme. Put cooking butter in it and chicken stock, covered it to boil.

"Have you seasoned the veggies?" I asked the melanin, found out her name was Florence.

"Yes ma- I mean yes!" She quickly corrected herself. I had told her not to add 'ma' when answering me.

"Pass it." She passed it and I heated oil and waited for it to get hot. After a while it did and I added the veggies inside and stirred it around for some time so it doesn't get too soggy, then poured it inside a sieve so the oil could reduce. I added the rice into the slightly boiling water, all the curry and co had melted and covered it to steam.

"Madam cook!" Konyii hollered.

"Be useful, come and help me blend tomatoes."

"If I wasn't here or you're in your husband's house, you'll call me to come and blend pepper right, please, I beg your pardon." The human being hissed and went back to her phone. The only person I pity is Ayo.

After sometime the rice became soft so I added the veggies and stirred it mildly. Now that was done, I gave it to Florence to put it in the cooler, so we could start the Jollof rice now.

We got everything ready and cooked it, Konyii was just laughing. She is taking to Ayo, that I know. I pity the guy, when they marry, he'll realise he has a wife that can't cook shit. Ok she can cook, but she's lazy.

"Finally, we are done!" I sighed and sat on the counter stool in the kitchen.

"Let me taste it oo." Konyii said standing up to carry spoon. I dragged both cooler closer to me.

"Don't let her touch that pot." I told florence, who looked like she wanted to run away with the glare Konyii was giving her.

"Shift please." Konyii told her, she looked over at me and I nodded my head. Before she'll have the girls head on a plate.

All of a sudden, Lilly came running inside the kitchen.

"Gosh, I thought I wouldn't make it in ti- hmm this kitchen smells heavenly." She stopped her rant, and took a deep breath.

"Just take a rest, you look like you've been running a marathon." I giggled at her appearance. Her hair was all over her face, she was sweaty all over her face making her hair glue more to her already red face.

"It's been long you cooked, did you cook for daddy?" She asked sitting near me.

"Yes, he'll be back any moment." As if on cue, we heard honking. We all walked outside, with Lilly telling us she needs to take care of something.

"Princess!" My dad hugged me really tight.

"Daddy!" I hugged him back with the same intensity, making my mom drag me away from him.

"He's mine, look for your own." I rolled my eyes mentally.

After we were all settled even with Konyii's mom, we all ate.

"I knew my princess could cook, unlike some people that is doubting us." My dad said looking over at my mom stylishly.

"Ejo yin ko." She feigned anger, making us all laugh.

"Ehn, lest I forget, we have a business party to attend on Friday. It's important we all go." My dad said looking over at me and my mom.

"Can I skip this one, I have exams to prepare for, remember?" I tried getting away from going to the party.

"This is very important. We must all go, I have to make a deal." My dad said in a finality tone. I wanted to argue more, but Konyii pinched me, so I stopped.

"Oda nigbayen. Abiola, a ma jade lo ra nkan ta ma need." My mom told me. I grumbled underneath my breath, making Konyii kick me. My mom is a shopper, she could shop for the whole day without getting tired. I see where I got my enthusiasm from. My dad always find a way to escape, whenever she wants to drag him out.

Ejo yin ko- its not you guys fault/ it's not your fault (for elders)
Oda nigbayen- it's alright then
A ma jade lo ra nkan ta ma need- We'll go out and get what we need.
