Return
Batman wasn't happy when he returned, as predicted. The team reported on what Dick had told them and the Bat's rage only seemed to increase and was about the storm out to get to work with his lawyers but stopped at Artemis calling out to him. "What?" he seethed.
"There's more," she said, Batman motioned her to continue, "they plan to make him take the initiation for becoming Ra's heir... at the end of the week." Batman glared at her heavily as she delivered the bad news.
"We were able to obtain his mission details for the week so that we might be able to retrieve him before then," Kaldur saved her from the terrifying gaze and handed the older hero the paper. Batman stood as he looked over the sheet.
"One more thing Bats," Wally said timidly with a tinge of sadness, "he said to give Jaybird this." He held up the suit that he had been hiding behind his back. Batman glared at the boy holding the suit.
"He stays as Robin," Batman growled. Wally winced, he knew this was the worst part.
"He insisted you finish his training and let him take the name. I-," he stumbled, "I think he knows he can't be Robin anymore."
Batman flinched slightly but hid it, "I'm not replacing him."
"I know," Wally said sadly, "I think he wants to be succeeded." A pause as the room digested his words. "If not put it in his case," Wally finished. Batman stared at the clothing and sighed as he took it.
"Rest up. It's going to be a busy week."
Batman then strutted out by zeta tube.
The teens buzzed excitedly that they were going to be helping get their friend back and moved to the common area. They all fell into comfortable places on the couches in the living room.
"Okay Artemis, what's the initiation thing you keep talking about," Wally started the conversation they all knew was coming.
The archer stared at her hands as she started talking, "in the League of Shadows, all members are forced to take a test to become a full member of the Shadows. When a person is trained in the League they have certain elements that make it extremely competitive and usually cause some sort of rivalry between students and sometimes the other members." She clenched her hands into fists, "to pass the test at the end, all the newcomers are put in a ring and given an opportunity to prove themselves as worthy and to also make even any grudges and other members are allowed to participate. Only when the best of the best in the ring remain of the students is it over and they either kill whoever was too weak or send them back to training if they're lucky and didn't die." The teens wrinkled their noses in disgust.
"What does it mean for Robin?" Kaldur asked softly.
Artemis looked up briefly but put her head back down and didn't meet anyone's eyes. "The training serves three purposes," she sighed, "the first it to make recruits trained. The second is to make the competitive element for the test, but the third to so you can make allies and connections." She looked up again but avoided eye contact as she took in their faces and took a deep breath. "Robin isn't going to be put in the training group like everyone else since he already knows how to fight. They probably plan on throwing him in with the entire League allowed to join in for grudge's sake, the only ally he might have is my sister and full members aren't allowed to join."
Wally's eyes widened, "so he'll have the entire League of Shadows trying to kill him and it only ends when he's the last one standing?" Artemis nodded sadly as what might end up killing his friend was revealed. A large silence filled the room.
A/N So I'm going to play a bit with certain characters' backstories which isn't really a thing I usually do so if it's unclear comment it and I can make a timeline or something idk.
I hope this kinda makes up the lack of updates I promised for a bunch of things. I'll see if I can get more done soon (I have potential free time if I get things done fast).
Tell me what you think.
Comment something fun here.
Love you all! - Ghost
