Chapter 21 - Familiar

The message arrived on a Tuesday.

At exactly eight o'clock.

Of course.

June stared at the notification for several seconds before opening it.

No greeting.

No apology.

No explanation.

Just a photograph.

She frowned.

It was a terrible photograph.

Blurry.

Poorly framed.

Entirely unremarkable.

Beneath it was a single sentence.

"This looks like something you'd like."

June blinked.

Then read it again.

Then a third time.

The message was so aggressively normal that it almost felt offensive.

A month.

An entire month.

And this was how he chose to reappear?

No explanation.

No acknowledgement.

No reference to the conversation that had ended everything.

Just...

A photograph.

For several seconds, June considered ignoring it.

Then she laughed.

Actually laughed.

Because somehow the message was so completely Elliot that it became impossible to be annoyed.

Her reply was immediate.

"This is ugly."

Three dots appeared.

Then:

"I knew you'd like it."

June rolled her eyes.

The response arrived so naturally that for a brief moment she forgot they hadn't spoken in weeks.

Then she remembered.

The realization settled awkwardly between her shoulders.

She stared at the screen.

Elliot continued as though nothing had happened.

"So."

"So?"

"How's the project?"

June looked at the message.

Then looked away.

Then looked back again.

The project.

Not:

Where have you been?

Not:

Are you angry?

Not:

Can we talk?

The project.

Of all the possible subjects available in the universe, Elliot had somehow chosen the project.

June should have been relieved.

Instead, she felt strangely disoriented.

"Which one?"

"The one with the deadline."

That narrowed it down to approximately twelve.

She smiled despite herself.

"It's finished."

"Good."

The answer came immediately.

Too immediately.

As though he had been waiting to ask.

For a brief moment, June simply stared at the screen.

Then she typed:

"You disappeared."

The typing indicator appeared.

Stopped.

Returned.

Then stopped again.

Several seconds passed.

The answer, when it finally arrived, was surprisingly simple.

"Yeah."

June frowned.

That was it.

No explanation.

No justification.

Just:

Yeah.

She stared at the message.

Then typed:

"That's all?"

Another pause.

Then:

"Pretty much."

June leaned back in her chair.

The conversation felt impossible.

She couldn't tell if she wanted to laugh or throw her phone across the room.

"Elliot."

"What?"

"You disappeared for a month."

"I know."

"And that's your explanation?"

Several seconds passed.

This time, when the reply arrived, it was longer.

Not much longer.

Just enough.

"I needed to."

June read the sentence twice.

Then a third time.

The words felt strangely familiar.

Not because Elliot had said them before.

Because she had.

Years earlier.

To other people.

For other reasons.

Sometimes distance wasn't punishment.

Sometimes it wasn't anger.

Sometimes it was simply survival.

The realization arrived quietly.

And once it arrived, she found herself unable to argue with it.

Neither of them mentioned the conversation.

Not that night.

Not the next day.

Not the week after.

The silence remained where it was.

Untouched.

Carefully avoided.

Like a crack in a wall that both people could see but neither felt ready to examine.

Yet something had changed.

June noticed it slowly.

In small moments.

Elliot still appeared at eight o'clock.

But not every day.

He still asked about projects.

But less often.

He still remembered details.

Still paid attention.

Still noticed things.

Yet there was a distance now.

Not physical.

Not even emotional.

A boundary.

A line that hadn't existed before.

For the first time since she'd met him, Elliot seemed to be protecting something.

Himself.

The realization unsettled her more than she expected.

Because suddenly she understood something she had never needed to understand before.

For two years, Elliot had always made room for her.

Without question.

Without hesitation.

Without conditions.

June had been so accustomed to that space that she had mistaken it for permanence.

Now she wasn't so sure.

At exactly eight o'clock the following Tuesday, her phone vibrated again.

A message.

A photograph.

Another ridiculous observation.

Another conversation waiting to happen.

June smiled.

Then opened it.

Across the city, life continued.

Projects continued.

Deadlines continued.

People continued arriving and leaving each other's lives.

Some permanently.

Some temporarily.

Some in ways that refused to fit neatly into either category.

June still didn't understand Elliot.

If anything, she understood him less than before.

But for the first time in a very long while, she found herself wondering whether understanding had ever been the point.

Because despite everything.

Despite the silence.

Despite the distance.

Despite the conversation neither of them had forgotten.

At eight o'clock, he had come back.

And somehow, that felt important.
