Chapter 1

Ivy Bennett pictured above!

__________

A shout startled me as I tried packing my whole life into multiple cardboard boxes.

Sighing, I trudged my way across my room, tripping over a few stray shoes on my way and opened the door shouting down the stairs,"Did you call me mom?"

"Yes hun, the moving van will be here in 3 hours. Do you need any help up there?", My mothers voice floats up the stairs.

"No thanks, I think I'm good."

Shutting the door and turning back to view the carnage that was my bedroom floor, I laughed which slowly turned to tears.

My life was laid out in front of me in this room and the though of that it could be whittled down into a van and shipped across the world made me unbelievably emotional. The though of leaving my friends, my job and my studies made my chest tighten.

I couldn't help but deep down blame my parents and grandparents. Even though I knew it wasn't their fault but if my parents hadn't decided to move to America before I was born then they wouldn't be making the decision to go back to the UK 20 years later. Throwing mine and Izzy's plans and goals to shit.

You see, my grandad wasn't very well at the moment. Since his heart attack 5 years ago, the last time we visited them, he'd been deteriorating ever since and all the weight and responsibility was on my grandmother's shoulders. He could still do the basics but his memory wasn't as sharp as I remember him being and he was getting more confused by the day.

Feeling myself start to think about the future made me reach up to wipe my wet cheeks and take a deep breath to try and get myself in check. Taking a deep breath in and looking at the mountain of clothes in front of me made my shoulders sag a bit more.

I mentally reminded myself that my period was coming up and that was causing me to act all emotional.

"Get a grip you absolute mess," I whispered under my breath.

***
A few hours later I stood with my parents and Izzy on the driveway as we watched the moving company pile our belongings into the van.

"This will be a good things for us, girls. I promise," my dad says through a smile. I turn my head in his direction as her looks from Izzy over to me and I dramatically roll my eyes. "Less of the cheek kid."

I snort out as a response as Izzy pipes up from her relaxed position on the ground, "Y'know dad, I think it would be good if you didn't have to fuck up my life just as it was getting started."

"Iz, that's enough. This is happening whether you like it or not, think about someone other than yourself for once in your life," my mother scolds.

"Mom, you do know that physically impossible for her to do, right?"

Izzy has always been a bit of a brat, being 2 years younger than me she's always felt as if she was in my shadow and has always resented me a little for it. Personally, it's completely unjustified to me, I don't get where her anger comes from when all I want it to get through college in one piece and graduate with a good job. I can't help the fact that I've always had a good head on my shoulders and got good grades when she did everything she could to rebel against everyone.

Sometimes we go together like cheese and crackers but other times we're like a brand on a bulls ass.

I laugh at my metaphor and Izzy shoots me a look causing me to raise my eyebrow and her in turn roll her eyes.

She gets to her feet and struts off past the three of us back inside the house, the long black locks grazing against my bare shoulder making me shiver.

"Tom, she is going to be a bloody nightmare when we get there," my mom cautioned, her hand coming up to rub her forehead. "I hope to god college straightens her out and she learns to simmer down."

My dads arms come up to encase my mom in his embrace as he whispered, "Hey, chill out," He leans back and takes her face in the palms of his hands, "Everything will be fine, Kim. It'll all work out, trust me."

There was something behind his tone that I couldn't work out and it made me feel slightly uneasy like he knew something we didn't and it wasn't sitting well with me.

Dad nodded his head in the direction of the house and with another roll of my eyes, I set off to find Izzy. There was no use in my parents talking to her so it was either me or sit with her in a mood on a 10 hour flight tomorrow.

Knowing exactly where I'd find her I stood leaning against the door jam to the kitchen and took in the sight in front of me.

"Well, I know your not sad otherwise it would be the ice cream you'd be taking the punishment out on but it's the Cheetos this time so you're...angry?" I said with a smirk on my face.

She rustled the bag and pulled a few out shoving them into her mouth in one go, leaving Cheeto dust all over her chest. "Wow! Is it that obvious, Einstein 2.0?"

I laughed as I walked over and jumped up on the counter next to her, she motioned the bag and I quickly grabbed a few before she wolfed the whole bag.

"Cmon Iz, spill."

"I don't get why we need to go back now. Yeah I get that grandad and grandma are struggling and I don't mean to sound selfish but surely that what carers and old people homes are for? Why do we need to move all the way across the world just to help out? I'm sure they'd appreciate money more than us pestering them every second." Her hands fall onto her lap as she finishes her rant.

Some part of my agreed slightly but there is no way I'd let Izzy know I did.  The importance of family outweighs those options. They were always there for us and now that they are vulnerable and need help we should be there for them.

"Cmon that's a bit unfair don't you think? What are you so worried about leaving behind anyway?" I questioned. "You just graduated high school and now your going off to college to meet hot British boys and start the rest of your life."

"I would argue back with you but I really don't have the energy right now," she said as her shoulders sagged and she slid off the counter her to land firmly on the floor. "I'm not changing their mind anytime soon so guess I'll just have to live with the consequences."

Wow, that's the first mature thing I've heard out of her all day.

I perked up as she made her way out of the kitchen and up the stairs and I noticed she left the bag of Cheetos on the counter. Shouting after her, "At least please don't be a bitch on the flight!"

"In your dreams, Ives!"
