Chapter Ten

"She's asleep?" Austin questions Leland looking at Layla.

"Apparently you and I are the only ones awake beside Isaac." He replies looking around at everyone fast asleep on the boat.

"Hey, I never asked how you meet Layla," Austin says and he smiles.

"Taylor and she were having a sleepover when we were really young. I had asked to go in the basement, but couldn't because they were down there. Me, being a little boy that wanted to play a video game, was very upset. Against what our mom told me I went down there and saw the two were coloring. I was so mad that they weren't even using the tv, so I grabbed a marker and started to color over what they were doing.

Taylor, being her didn't yell at me. She just asked me to stop and asked me why I had ruined their picture. Layla, on the other hand, was mad. She yelled at me and kicked me where the sun doesn't shine." He says and Austin laughs knowing his cousin would do that. "I was scared of her for a while and then the older we got the more and more I started to like her and try to impress her. When she was a sophomore I finally asked her out and we've been together since." He says with a soft smile on his lips. Austin nods his head not needing to say anything.

They sit there in silence until Austin asks a question that's been bugging him. "How long as Taylor had those panic attacks?" Leland looks over at Austin confused.

"What panic attacks?" He asks pretending to not understand him. He knows Taylor likes to keep her issues to herself, like many other people.

"Don't say that. I was there at the beach, we all were. She broke down and you were ready to kill the doctor because they wouldn't let you go and help her." He argues and Leland looks away from him and towards his sleeping sister. She's in the corner, her legs on Austin's lap with a blanket over her.

"She's never liked having the attention on her. The attacks just come when she feels overwhelmed." He says and looks at Austin. "Why do you care though?" He questions a small smirk on his lips.

"You know why." Austin grumbles and Leland shakes his head.

"You said you think you like her, but that's not the truth." He says and Austin looks at him confused. "You know you like her and I'm pretty sure you don't just like her." He states and Austin looks away not wanting to give anything away with his eyes. "That's what I thought." He hears. "I'll tell you now, she won't wait for you because she's oblivious. If you don't tell her, someone else will take her and then you won't have a chance." He explains and Austin knows this, but he can't just say something like that to her.

"I know, but she doesn't even trust me. I'm not going to tell her that I've-" He stops unsure of what to say. Does he like her or is he in love with her? Those are dangerious waters to be thinking about.

"She's starting to trust you. I see it and I know for a fact that she couldn't have dried her hair that well with one hand." He says giving Austin a look, he just smiles.

"I wasn't much help with it though."

"She still asked you for help. That's a step forward for her." He says and Austin nods looking over at Leland.

"Why does she get the attacks?" He asks and Leland takes a breath wondering if he should tell Austin. It's not his place, but he knows Austin is a good person. He's not going to use it against her and if he tried he's beat the living hell out of him. Debating for a little while longer he gives up and begins to explain.

"She has scopophobia and a social anxiety disorder, which means she hates having attention in her. Scopophobia is the fear of being stared at, and that's how she is. She doesn't like having everyone look at her, so when the fight happened and she saw everyone looking at her it caused the anxiety disorder to come in and give her the attack. She's been getting better, but most of the time it's a step forward and then two steps back." Austin hears the pain in this voice and looks towards her.

Austin doesn't say anything, but he knows Leland feels responsible for her phobia. "What do you mean take a step forward and two steps back?" He asks looking for an example and turning his head back to Leland.

"Um...about a month ago the three of us went out to eat. She ordered her own food which was good and she had even asked for ketchup because the waitress forgot. Normally she'd just eat her food without it, but she asked. The next day the two were at school and she had a break down because while they were getting there food the people behind her were staring at her. She felt they were mad at her because she couldn't choose what she wanted fast enough. It's just things like that where I think we're getting somewhere, but then she falls back." He says and then a yawn escapes his mouth.

"That's why she didn't want to go on the trip. There were too many people." He mumbles remembering when Layla and Taylor were talking while they thought everyone was asleep. Leland nods his head. "When I came over to the house she was still very outgoing and seemed to say whatever was on her mind."

"She's fine when around Layla and me, and she wasn't really talking to you. She'd joke with us and it seemed to me she was trying to make herself believe that you weren't there." He concludes and Austin nods thinking back to when he was over. He was trying to talk to her, but she really didn't say or stay with him long.

They're quite the rest of the ride back to the docks. Isaac comes out with a smile. "So, guys have fun?" He asks looking at Leland and Austin.

"Yeah, I think everyone did. Thanks for the ride." Leland says. Isaac nods and begins to tie the boat to the dock. Leland begins to wake Layla up and Austin turns to Taylor. He puts her legs on the ground and says her name trying to wake her.

"Taylor, wake up." He tries again, but she doesn't even twitch. He taps her thigh and says her name again. "Taylor. How do you wake her up?" He asks looking at Leland. He smiles and shrugs. Austin turns back to her. "Taylor." He says louder, but still nothing.

He hears Layla laugh. "She's a heavy sleeper, and I don't think anything is going to wake her up." She says and yawns herself.

"I'll get her," Leland says after getting everyone to grab their things. He walks up to her and lifts her off the seat. He carefully walks off the boat and then begins to walk back to the van.

Austin gets up and helps make sure that everything they brought is off the boat. He grabs his and Taylor's backpack which is all that remains and walks off the boat. "Thanks again." He says shaking hands with Isaac.

"No problem." He says with a smile. Austin jogs up to the van and closes the door after he's in. He drops the bags on the floor and sees that he's stuck in the middle back seat. He makes his way over to the seat and realizes that it's not going to work. He's too big to be sitting in the middle. He unbuckles Taylor moves her to the middle seat. Once he's in the seat she was in he leans her against him and makes sure she isn't going to fall over. Once the car starts moving Austin's quick to fall asleep.

"Austin, wake up." He hears. He then sees something bright and opens his eyes to be blinded. He sees Jack's face. "We're back. Get up." He says and then gets out of the van. Austin blinks a few more times to wake himself up. He looks down and sees Taylor. Her head in his lap and still seems to be in a deep sleep.

Austin pushes her up against the seat so he can get up and then he grabs her and begins to carefully get out of the car with her in his arms. He walks behind Jack and Analyze, and the four of them go up the elevator.

Austin puts Taylor on the couch and then goes back down with Leland and Carson to grab all the crap.

Once everything is back in the room somewhere, Austin takes a pillow off of the couch, grabs a blanket, and makes himself comfortable on the floor. He goes right back to sleep as if he never woke up.

Taylor wakes up a few hours later and adjusts her position to get comfortable, but not realizing she was the edge of a couch she rolls off right onto Austin. She groans in pain and he immediately wakes up out of breath. He sees Taylor on top of him and is confused. She rolls over off of him holding her side. "Sorry." She breathlessly says.

"I'm fine. Are you ok?" He asks looking over at her. She doesn't say anything and he sits up. She has watery eyes and her breathing is shallow. "Taylor?" He asks concerned.

"Just my side." She says in a quick breath. He looks down at her side and sees her hand over her stomach.

"Can I see? Just in case it got worse or something." He says not sure what to do. She removes her hand from her stomach and he slowly pulls up her sweatshirt. It still looks the same to him, a dark purple. "Do you want some ice for it?" He asks knowing that's what you should put on a bruise. She shakes her head and he sees she's in a lot of pain. He doesn't know what to do and is starting to panic.

"Layla?" She asks and he knows she wants her. He nods his head and quickly gets up. He walks quickly into the room that she's in and shakes her awake.

"Layla." He says and she blinks at him confused and slightly upset that she's been woken up.

"What?" She asks annoyed and closes her eyes again.

"Taylor, she needs you." He says. Her eyes pop open and she gets up. Austin walks ahead of her, but she runs ahead once she sees her on the floor.

"What is she doing on the floor?" She asks and kneels next to her.

"She rolled off the couch and landed on me and then rolled off of me." He rushes not sure of what to do.

"Taylor, what hurts?" She asks. Taylor moves her hand over her to her side. Layla pushes the sweatshirt up more and looks at the bruise. She sees that it's spread and it seems to keep spreading.

"Austin wake Leland up and tell him to get the van ready." She orders. Austin doesn't hesitate and gets up to wake him up.

"Why do I need to get the van ready?" Leland asks tiredly but sits up.

"I think Taylor's hurt really bad, Layla told me to get you to get the van ready." Leland hops out of the bed and quickly walks out of the room.

"Layla, what's wrong?" He asks looking down at his sister. Her face is red and she's squinting her watery eyes as tears roll down her eyes.

"Just get the car ready." She orders. He goes to protest, but she stops him with a look. He grabs the keys and runs out of the room. "Austin I can't lift her, so I need you to bring her to the van, but you need to be very careful not to put pressure on her side or it will hurt her more. Do you understand?" She asks. Austin nods and she motions him over.

She helps get her into his arms and then leads the way out of the hotel. Austin carefully, but quickly follows behind her. "Now, you need to lay her on the ground, but again she can't have pressure on her side." Austin nods his head and slowly lowers her in the back. Layla hops in after. "Leland drive to the nearest hospital, but don't drive crazy. If you take too sharp of a turn or stop too suddenly you will end up....hurting her." She warns. He nods and begins pulling out into the road.

She looks back down at Taylor and sees she has a few tears rolling down her cheeks. "Taylor, I know it hurts, just stay awake as long as you can. If you need to start talking." She says. Taylor blinks twice quickly. "Taylor, what's your favorite color, orange or purple?" She asks. Taylor blinks twice. "Did you like snorkeling today?" She asks. Taylor blinks twice again. "Ok, Austin is going to talk to you about snorkeling, but I'm right here." She says and looks over at Austin. "Ask her yes or no questions, two blinks yes, one no. Try to make the questions two blinks, it'll help keep her awake." She says and then moves to the front to talk to Leland.

"Wh-what was that animals name we say, sporkfish or scorpionfish?" He asks. She blinks twice and he nods his head. "Um...which is better, rain or snow?" She blinks twice. "Really?" He asks and she blinks twice again. "Oh, I wasn't" He stops and tries to come up with another question. "Do you like day or night better?" She blinks twice. "Cold or warm?" She blinks twice again. "Even or odd numbers." She blinks once.

He continues to ask whatever comes to mind to keep her awake. When they get to the hospital, Layla runs out of the van and gets someone to take Taylor. "Layla, what's wrong?" Leland asks as they walk into the hospital.

"I'm not a doctor, I don't know for sure." She says and Leland grabs her arm and turns her towards him knowing she's not telling him the truth. He loves her, but won't just wait to hear what's wrong with his baby sister.

"What do you think is wrong with my sister?" He asks again and Layla stares at him and takes a breath.

"When she fell I think because her side is weak that she may have opened up an old wound or made a new one and it's bleeding internally, but Leland like I said, I can't know for sure." She says as he turns around and starts pacing. "Leland, calm down. We got her here, she's going to be fine."

"No, this is all my fault. I know she hates when people argue let alone fight, but I just had to go and start one with that stupid guy. If I'd just walked away like she'd asked, she wouldn't have been in any pain and we wouldn't have been here." He says with tears in his eyes. Layla wraps her arms around him and moves him towards the chairs in the waiting room.

Austin sits down in the waiting room with them but gives the couple's enough room to talk without him hearing. He sits there not knowing what's going to happen and feeling as if maybe he'd hurt her.
