Chapter Thirteen

"Can't I eat jello or something?" Taylor asks annoyed that she's still on ice chips.

"Tomorrow you can." The nurse says and Taylor huffs.

"Hey, in two days you're out of here." Layla reminds her.

"Yeah, and we can go to our next stop." She says and Layla smiles unsure of what's going to happen. "I'm not broken, I can still walk and be in a car." She says and Layla nods.

"But it might not be good for you to do." She reminds. Taylor shakes her head.

"I'll be fine and Dad said he's fine with it as long as Leland stays with me and we both know he won't be leaving my side." She says and Layla nods again.

"We'll see." She says and Taylor lays her head back on the pillows.

"I can't wait to get out of this place and go where I want to go." She says and closes her eyes.

"Well the doctor said-"

"I know." Taylor waves her hand at her mother.

"Ok, we love you and if there is anything you guys need just call us. Taylor if something hurts you'd better speak up." She says in a warning voice.

"I will love you." She says back. Her mom bends down and gives her a hug.

"You keep an eye on her." She says to Leland. Leland smiles and nods before giving her a hug. "And no running with her in the wheelchair." She says as Leland begins pushing Taylor into the parking lot.

"Should I freak mom out a bit?" He says in a whisper. Taylor nods. Leland begins to jog while pushing Taylor. They hear their mother's yells and laugh. Leland slows down and looks back to see his Dad trying to calm her down. "Have fun Dad." He yells and Taylor laughs.

"So, where are we going to go now?" Taylor asks and Leland smiles.

"Mississippi." He says and she smiles.

"Finally." She says and he laughs.

"The hospital isn't that bad." Taylor turns towards him and glares. "What?"

"You don't understand the half of it."

"Well, now you're going to be stuck in a van for 11 hours with weirdos." He reminds her.

"That's ok, I'm still drugged up on pain meds and have a whole bottle." She says causing Leland to start laughing.

When they get to the van he helps her in against her wishes. "I can walk just fine." She says and he closes the door for her. She rolls her eyes and buckles herself.

"Ok, so everyone wanted to give you like a surprise party thing when we got back." He says and Taylor looks at him with nervousness. "But Layla and I told them that you just wanted everything to be normal, aka why she's still at the hotel and not here. She wanted to make sure none of them did anything."

Taylor nods her head. "Thanks." She says fidgeting with her hands.

"It's ok you know," Leland says glancing over at her.

"I know, just wish I wouldn't...like get so.."

"I know and we're getting there. You're getting better at being in public." He says and she nods and wipes her eyes.

"Don't know why I'm crying." She says with an airy laugh.

"The doctor did say you'd be more emotional with the medication." He says and she nods.

"Awesome." She mumbles. They're both quiet the rest of the way back to the hotel. Taylor walks back up to the room and they keep the wheelchair in the van.

When Taylor opens the door see she's them playing a card game. She smiles as Layla waves her over. "I'm going to win." She says. Taylor slowly gets onto the ground next to her. She doesn't know what they're playing.

"BS." Carson says. Analyze shakes her head and he stares at her. "No, you've got to be kidding me." He says and picks up the stack in the middle.

The game does end with Layla winning and everyone else complaining that she keeps winning. "I'm sorry none of you can lie." She says and gets a few glares.

"Ok, the question is does anyone want to start driving tonight or should we just wait til tomorrow morning?"

"I'll drive," Carson says with a shrug.

"I'm fine driving," Chloe says and Leland nods.

"Jack, which one do you want driving your truck?"

"Chloe." He says tossing his keys towards her.

"Wha-what?" Carson says and Jack laughs.

"You'll drive the thing like a little kid. I know Chloe can handle my truck." He says and Carson slumps in his seat.

"Alright, make sure you have everything before we leave," Leland says. Everyone gets up and begins packing up. "I can get your things," Leland says and Taylor glares over at him.

"I'm not dying, go get your crap. I can grab mine."

"You can't lift anything over five pounds." He says and she takes a breath to calm herself down.

"Then I'll just put everything in my backpack, then you can take it." She says. He debates but gives in after seeing her annoyed face.

"Just don't hurt yourself." He says and she nods her head. She looks for her backpack and sees it in the corner of the room. After getting off of the floor she walks over and goes to lift it up, but Austin grabs the handle.

"I believe this is more than five pounds." He says and she gives him a deadpanned look.

"Not you too." She says and he looks at her confused. "I'm not a baby, I can do things on my own." She says and he smiles.

"I know, just making sure we don't have to go back to the hospital." He says and puts her backpack on the couch. She watches as he goes and begins to pack his things ignoring her gaze. She turns away from him and begins to find her clothes.

"Everything in here?" Leland asks pointing to her backpack and duffle bag.

"Yup." She says with a nod. He picks it up and goes out the door with it.

"Taylor, can you take these down?" Austin asks holding out some Tupperware knowing that she doesn't want to just watch everyone else work.

"Sure." She says and grabs them happy to be doing something. Austin grabs the cooler and walks after her.

"We really need to get wheels for this." He says with a grunt.

"But then you boys couldn't show off and see who can lift what," Taylor says with a smile. Austin looks over at her surprised. "What?" She asks amused.

"Nothing, you are just...acting a little different." He says and she shrugs.

"The doctor said the pills make me more emotional, but I'm also a little out of it. Don't think I have a filter of what comes out of my mouth." She says and he nods.

"Maybe that's a good thing." He says and Taylor thinks about it.

"Maybe."

"Why did I say I'd drive?" Carson asks Taylor. They are the only two up.

"Because you wanted to get back on the road." She says looking at the road.

"No, I wanted to drive Jack's truck, but nooo. Can't have me do that." He complains.

"Don't even talk about not being able to do things. Leland hasn't let me make my own sandwich." She says making him laugh.

"He's just trying to help."

"I know, and that's why I haven't bit his head off...yet." She says with a smile.

"I know how you feel though. I broke two ribs and was in a similar position. My Mom would help me go to the bathroom." Taylor laughs and then covers her mouth trying not to wake anyone up. "Mind you I was nineteen." He says causing her to laugh harder.

Austin slowly stirs awake from the noise and looks to see Taylor laughing. "I don't know how you did this for hours. I'm ready to just pass out because I'm so bored. Just stare at the pavement and make sure you're in between the lines." He says and Taylor smiles. "Oh, and you have to listen to this annoying woman that likes you boss you around." He says glaring down at the GPS.

"Only like five more hours." She says trying to make him happier.

"I don't think my butt will ever have feeling again." He says and moves in his seat. Austin laughs at that and Taylor jumps slightly.

"When'd you get up?" She asks and he shrugs.

"A few minutes ago." He says and yawns. "Why aren't you asleep?" He asks and she doesn't answer. "Taylor, is your side causing you pain?" He asks quieter so Carson can't here.

"No, it's just...the stupid bandage is very uncomfortable and I can't sleep sitting upright, but I also can't lay across the seats because then it puts pressure on my side." She says and then realizes she was complaining. "But it's fine, I'll go to sleep soon." She says and he looks at her strangely.

He unbuckles himself and carefully moves to the empty seat next to her. She looks to her left at him confused. "Try leaning against me, you're not all the way on down, but also not straight up." He suggests. She looks at him weirdly. "Just try, you have to be getting rest." He says and she nods.

"Fine." She says and pulls her knees up to her chest. She leans towards him and gets comfortable. She moves his arm over her shoulders so she has more room.

"Better?" He asks with a small smile. She nods her head into his side and begins to fall asleep. Once she's out Carson makes a comment.

"You're in for a long run." He says and Austin looks in the rearview mirror confused. "You hurt her you're going to have Leland, Layla, Analyze, and Chloe after you. And I'm pretty sure Julia will get some revenge on you." He says and Austin looks at him weirdly.

"I understand Leland and Layla because they are like family, and Julia and Analyze have gotten close to her, but why would Chloe come after me?" He asks and Carson chuckles.

"You don't know?" He asks and Austin shakes his head. "Chloe is a lesbian and likes Taylor." Austin's eyes almost come out of his head.

"She...but..how do you know she's.."

"She has been since high school and has always thought Taylor was hot, but she knows Taylor isn't like that." He says and Austin just shakes his head.

"How did I not know this?" He asks astonished.

"Because you only ever pay attention to Taylor."
