Chapter Twelve
Taylor begins to wake up and she blinks a few times before seeing clearly. She feels a headache and pain on her side. She lifts her head and sees her mom and dad asleep on the two chairs. Leland and Layla are on the floor, and Austin's in a chair next to her bed. "How are you feeling?" He asks.
"I think I have a hammer in my skull and it's trying to get out." She says quietly.
"The doctor said you might say that, well similar to that. He said if you drink water is should help ease the pain." He says and hands her a water bottle. She grabs it and tries to open the cap, but can't get it open. Austin grabs it and opens it for her.
"Thanks." She says and takes a sip. "Why am I here and why are my parents here?" She asks and Austin looks at her confused.
"Don't remember?" He asks and she shakes her head. "I'll go get a doctor." He says and stands up. Taylor watches as he leaves and feels alone even with everyone in the room. He and a nurse come back almost right away.
"Hi, can you tell me your name?" She asks.
"Taylor Gwynne." She says.
"Ok, what's your birthday?"
"May 2, 1995." She says and the nurse nods.
"Do you remember anything about how you got here or why you're here?" She asks. Taylor thinks for a moment and shakes her head.
"Wait, you...you were asking me really bad questions to keep me awake." She says looking at Austin. He laughs and nods his head.
"Is that all you remember?" Taylor nods her head. "Alright, that's fine. You were put under almost right away. You want to drink all of that in about two hours and if the pain gets really bad you can push this button." She says handing Taylor the clicker.
The nurse pulls Austin over and talks to him before she leaves. He comes and sits back down next to her. "Why am I here?" She asks again.
"You had internal bleeding from your liver." He says and Taylor shakes her head.
"I would have told Layla if I felt that."
"You did. You must have woken up and not realized that you were on the couch and when you rolled over you fell onto me. That's when it ripped open. You rolled off of me and I tried to help, but you asked for Layla. Layla came out and told us what we needed to do to get you here." He says and she remembers.
"Yeah, sorry about that." She says and he shakes his head.
"I was fine, I'm glad you landed on me and not the ground." He says and notices her confusion. "If you'd landed on the ground you could have torn open something else." He says and she nods.
"Well, thank you then." She says not sure of what to say.
"Do you remember waking up after the surgery?" He asks and she shakes her head. She then realizes that if they put her under she was on anesthesia.
"Oh god, what did I say? Was it recorded?" She asks and he laughs.
"It wasn't recorded we were all laughing too hard to even think about recording." He says and she gets bright red.
"What did I say?" She asks and he smiles.
"You put up a fight saying that Layla was your sister and it was gross that her and Leland were dating, you didn't believe that your mom was your mom when she came, you thought your Dad teleported here, you were making fun of Gru for his big nose, you thought I couldn't hear you the whole time you were talking about me-"
"What was I saying about you?" She asks scared of what her unconscious self would say.
"I was your cute friend, but don't worry, you said you wanted to marry your old dog. That he was the only one that understands you." He says and she covers her face. "You also tried to kiss the other nurse." He says and Taylor looks at him frozen.
"I did what?" She asks peeking through her fingers.
"Just kidding you didn't try to kiss anyone." He says. She drops her hands and glares at him.
"Not funny." She says and he laughs.
"But it was." He says and she rolls her eyes. "Don't forget to drink that." He says. She nods and takes a drink from the water bottle.
"Does the tv work?" She asks.
"Yeah, but you're supposed to go back to sleep." He says and she huffs.
"But I'm not going to." She says and he nods.
"I guess I'll have to bore you to sleep with my questions." He says and she smiles.
"How about I find a book for you to read?" She asks hoping he won't care.
"Sure." He says.
"Can I borrow your phone?" She asks never knowing where her's is. He takes his out of his pocket and hands it to her. She logs into his app store with her account and finds a book she has.
After scrolling for about five minutes she finds a book. She hands his phone back to him and takes another drink from the water bottle. "Breath?" He asks.
"It's a new book that I thought might be interesting." She says. He nods and swipes his phone to the first page.
"Breathing is a right, not a privilege, so I'm stealing it back. I'm nervous, but I'm not scared. This is the mission I've been training for. I'm ready to lead." He starts off.
Taylor continues to listen and keeps drinking but ends up asleep after about two chapters. Austin doesn't realize she's asleep until he's in chapter seven. He looks up and sees her head turned and her eyes are closed. He grabs the water bottle from her hand not wanting her to spill it and puts it in the side cup holder.
He turns his phone back off and tries to get comfortable in the small chair. "Thank you for doing that." He jumps at the voice and hears a light laugh.
"I didn't mean to scare you," Amanda says.
"It's fine, just thought everyone was asleep." He says looking over at her his heart still beating at and unhealthy rate.
"I've met you before haven't I?" She asks and he nods with a smile.
"At Layla's birthday party we had to take her to the hospital because she broke her toes. I was in the waiting room when you guys came." He says and she nods her head.
"I forgot about that." She says and a small smile. "Guess you're always there when she needs you." She says and Austin shrugs.
"Or I'm just bad luck." He says and she shakes her head.
"I know you helped her with the whole beach fiasco and Layla told me that you were the one to go and get her to help Taylor." She says and Austin still doesn't feel it's true. "Young man you can't blame yourself. No one knew that she was hiding the pain, Leland didn't even notice and he's always watching her." She says with a laugh.
"She said it was hurting, but that she was fine." He says and she nods.
"She doesn't like people to feel bad for her and doesn't like attention. If she doesn't want you knowing something she won't tell you. I'm her mom and she still can hide things from me." She says with pain in her voice.
"She seems very open with her family."
"Yeah, her and Leland are very close. As well as Layla and her. You can't separate the three of them." She says and looks down at the sleeping couple. "With me and Jerry...she feels as if she's letting us down because she's different and can't control her anxiety, but we couldn't care. We love her little ways and wish she'd be more comfortable with us." She says looking towards her daughter. Austin nods and then his phone starts vibrating. He takes it out and sees Analyze name.
"Hello?"
"What the hell happened? You guys can't just say that you are at the hospital with nothing else." She yells through the phone.
"Just give me a minute," Austin says. "I should tell them what's going on." He says and Amanda nods. He quietly walks out of the room and closes the door behind him. "We needed to get Taylor here as fast as we could and if we would have messaged you what happened you guys would have freaked out."
"Little late." He hears Julia say.
"What happened?" Analyze asks again.
"Taylor rolled off the couch while she was sleeping and when she landed because her side was already weak it broke open her liver causing internal bleeding. Taylor had me get Layla and we brought her to the hospital. She had to get surgery, but is doing fine." He says and hears all the voices mix over the other end.
"When can we come and see her?" Julia asks and Austin takes a breath.
"I don't know. She can't have all of us in the room, only about two at a time probably." He says realizing that this is going to cause a lot of attention to her.
"We'll come in about four hours, but we all won't go in," Analyze says.
"Alright, just message Leland, Layla, or me before you come in. She might still be sleeping when you guys get here." He says with a yawn of his own.
"Ok, see you soon," Julia says.
"Bye." And then he ends the call. He carefully walks back into the room and sees Leland's up and in the chair, he was sitting in. He's holding her hand and his head is resting next to her leg. Austin goes and sits in the back. He takes his sweatshirt off and puts it under his head to get some sleep.
