Chapter Thirty-one

"It's been two weeks." Austin says looking at everyone else. Jack, Analyze, Chloe who showed up a week ago, Carson, Julia, and Layla. They are all banged up pretty well, but all are going to be discharged in two days or less.

"You have to give them time. Their bodies went through a lot." Chloe says and he shakes his head.

"They haven't improved at all, they are both still on machines," Layla says with tears in her eyes. They are all quiet in the patient room with many other's who don't like to be stuck in there rooms.

They sit there until Layla parents come rushing in. "They think Taylor's waking up, Austin you're allowed to come in as well."

Austin stands up and rushes past them knowing where her room is. He enters and sees a nurse by her bed. She blinks a few times and then starts moving her arms. "I didn't do it. I didn't mean it." She yells trashing around. The nurse tries to get her attention, but she keeps fighting saying she didn't do it. The nurse has to sedate her before she hurts herself.

"What...what was that?" Austin asks looking up at the nurse.

"It happens when someone has a head trauma or surgery when they first wake up they see something that scares them or relive what happened." She says and looks to her parents. "It happens a lot, don't worry."

"She moved, does that mean she isn't paralyzed?" Austin asks looking down at her.

"I really couldn't tell you, it could me that and I have high hopes for her." She says and then something starts beeping. She looks up at Taylor's monitor.

"Code blue." She yells and pulls the pillows from her head and then starts to do compressions.

Taylor's parents start asking questions.

"Nurse, get them out of here." The doctor says. Her parents are pushed out and Austin sits there in the back watching as they try to get her heart rate back. "Clear." He hears this four times and then the beeping stops. "There you go Taylor, keep fighting." The doctor says looking down at her. He glances at Austin and smiles. "She's trying." He says, Austin nods his head and moves closer to her.

He grabs her fragile hand and holds it tight. "Keep fighting, I know it's hard, but you can't leave me now." He says and kisses her hand.

The group watches from outside the window and they try to calm her parents down. "She's fighting." The doctor says to all of them. Before he can get very far there's beeping again. This time it's Leland.

They all watch as they rush towards him and start doing compressions. There are too many people that come into the room for anyone to see anything, but Austin sees Leland. He's trashing and has blood coming out of his mouth. He turns his head back to Taylor, he looks up and sees her heart rate has risen. "He's going to be fine, they're helping him now." He says to her. Her heart rate slows, not by much, but he hopes that she can hear him.

He looks back over and sees they've all stopped working on him. "You can't give up, then she will." He yells at them. They all turn to him and the doctor holds his gaze. "She won't fight anymore." He says as tears run down his face. The doctor looks at the time and turns to the nurse.

"Sir, he has a heart rate." A nurse says. The doctor looks up at the screen.

"I'll be damned," He then says a ton of words that Austin can't understand. When they leave him Layla rushes in. He sees her face red from tears and she starts talking to him. He can't hear what she's saying but hopes it's helping him.

She glances up at Austin and they hold each other's gaze. "You keep her alive, I can't lose her and the love of my life." She says in a raspy voice. Austin nods his head and turns back to Taylor.

Austin wakes up to Taylor's fingers moving. He looks down and looks back up at her. He sees her wince and then blink a few times. "I'll go get the nurse." He says standing up and running to a nurse. "She's awake." He says and runs back to the room with the nurse behind him.

"Hello miss, could you tell me your name?" The nurse asks looking up to Taylor.

"My name's...my name....what is my name?" She asks looking at Austin. Austin looks at the nurse concerned.

"Your name is Taylor, Taylor can you tell me the name of your parents?" She asks. Taylor furrows her eyebrows. "What about the nice gentleman next to you?" She asks. Taylor turns her head and stares at him. She shakes her head and Austin's stomach drops. "That's alright, I'm going to go get the doctor." She says before hurrying out of the room.

Taylor looks over at Austin with a confused look. "You seem familiar to me, but I don't know who you are." She says and he wipes a few tears that have fallen.

"We are good friends." He says with a light laugh in his voice.

"You seem more than a friend to me." She says and then sees the doctor come in.

"Hi, Taylor. Can you tell me what this is?" He asks holding up a picture of a black house.

"A house."

"Good, what about this?" He asks.

"Dog, flag, brush, pillow, phone."

"That's excellent. Can you tell me the color of this card." He says holding up the red one.

"Um..." She stares at it not sure.

"This is red." He says and holds up a blue card. She shakes her head again. "That's fine, can you remember anything? Why you are here?" He asks. She looks at him and shakes her head. She sees someone in her peripheral vision and stares.

She starts seeing things really fast, they won't slow down. She screams bringing her hands up to her head. The doctor beings doing things and Austin looks at her with concern. She continues to scream for about two minutes before passing out.

"I'm not sure what she just had go I." The doctor mumbles, but Austin heard. He starts talking with the nurse, but Taylor's breathing starts to slow down back to normal and then she opens her eyes.

"Where's Leland? Is he ok? What about Austin?" She asks looking around frantically. She sees Austin and releases a breath. "Where's Leland?" She asks looking at him.

"He's right next to you." The doctor says staring at her looking slightly confused. Taylor looks at him confused and then sees a bed behind him. She turns her head and sees him hooked up to machines. She covers her mouth and starts crying.

"Leland." She calls waiting for him to look up. She sees Layla look at her and knows it's not good. She tries to sit up, but the nurse pushes her back down.

"You need to stay here, we are doing everything we can for him." She says, but Taylor pushes her away. Austin jumps into action and grabs her arms.

"Taylor, shh, it's ok. Look at me, Taylor." He says. She looks over at him tears falling down her face. "He's going to be ok." He says pulling her into his chest. He holds her as she begins to sob into him.

"Taylor, do you remember what happened?" The doctor asks. Taylor sniffles and nods her head pulling away from Austin.

"Layla was driving, and there was a semi. I screamed for her to stop, but the other car was coming so fast, she..she didn't have time to do anything. We all crashed together. How is everyone else?" She says looking at Austin.

"We were all waiting for you two, everyone else was hurt, but we're all fine." He says and points to everyone outside the room. They're all waving with smiles on their faces. Her parents come rushing into the room and began hugging her.

"Ow, ow, ow." She says feeling pain in her abdomen and her leg and just about everywhere else. Her parents are quick to get up and apologize. "What's wrong with me and in english?" She says right as the doctor was about to speak.

"Broken right leg, right ankle, left hand, left arm, and many ribs. You have major bruising and swelling in your abdomen were metal had fallen on you, but your memory seems to have come back just one more thing. What color shirt is you Mom wearing?" He asks. Taylor looks over and sees that it's grey.

"A light grey." She says and they all look at her. She looks at there faces confused and then sees that everything is black, white, or a greyish color. "Am I...color blind?" She asks looking back up to the doctor.

"Can you see any reds or blues?" He asks. She looks around the room and shakes her head.

"Just greys." She says.

"That's very strange, most of the time people that are color blind can see a red tint or blueish tint." He says and shines a bright light into her eyes. "Nurse, get her an MRI, I want to see it for myself." He says. The nurse nods his head and then he's back to blinding Taylor.

"Mind telling us why she needs another MRI?" Austin asks looking at the doctor.

"Well, we saw swelling in her brain which could have covered something up, now that the swelling is gone, if there is anything we should be able to see it." The doctor says and starts writing something on her chart.

"Doctor, she can go in number two." She says. He nods and gets another nurse to help her down to the room.

"Just sit still." A nurse tells her after she was laid onto what she thought looked like a stretcher and then covered with a heavy blanket. She watches as she moves backwards into the machine. She stares at the white and then she's back to being out.

She's brought back to her room and Austin's still there. He looks up as she comes in. "You know you kinda look like crap." She says after they get her back into her bed.

"Well, kinda happens when you're stuck in a hospital for more than two weeks and then worried that your girlfriend isn't going to wake up again." He says and she gives him a sad look.

"Sorry." She says looking down at her hands.

"You pulled through and that's what I care about." He says grabbing her hands. She looks up at him and then back over to her brother. "He's fighting." She hears. She nods her head holding back the tears.

"Ok, Taylor we are going to get you into surgery right away." The doctor says quickly coming into the room. "Your parents have already agreed." He says and she stares up at him confused.

"Why?" She asks and he holds out a black and white photo of her brain.

"This" He points, "is a tumor that's been in your brain. We need to remove if before it continues to grow." He says and then she's being pushed out the door.

"Has she ever had any hallucinations or thinking that she hears things?" The doctor asks after the surgery. Taylor's back in her room, but can't have visitors.

"I-I don't think so. I mean she's always hated attention on her, made her feel uncomfortable." Taylor's Mother says and Austin looks over at her feeling bad that she doesn't even know what's going on with her daughter.

"She felt that she'd have urges to do bad things and that something would tell her to do them, or they would say things to her. She's had many nightmares, but I don't know if they were hallucinations." Austin says. Both parents look over at him, but he doesn't look over at them.

"Urges? Like what?"

"She said things like grabbing a knife and hurting herself or others or running into the street when there were cars. She would just move away from whatever or whoever she thought she'd hurt. She kept pushing it back." He says and hears Taylor's Mother's cries.

"Do you know how long she's been having the urges?"

"I really don't know. Layla or Leland might know." He says even though he knows that Leland can't speak anything.

"Alright, thank you." The doctor says before walking into the room were Layla lays on her hands.

Austin feels eyes on him and looks back to her parents. "She didn't want anyone really to know. She'd felt ashamed that she couldn't fight them." He says and they nod their heads before beginning to talk to each other about her.

Austin sits there and slowly falls asleep. "Sir, sir wake up." He's shaking awake with sweat dripping all over him. He looks around frantic. "Sir, Taylor is in her room. You were calling for her." A woman says looking at him concerned. He nods his head and slowly walks down to her room not realizing he'd fallen asleep. He and Layla refuse to leave the hospital and go to the hotel everyone's been staying at.

He pulls up a chair and lays his head down looking up at her. He feels comfort seeing her chest rise and fall. He looks over at Layla and sees her talking to Leland. She laughs about something and puts her hand on his chest. Feeling like he's intruding he looks away back at Taylor.

"Nurse! Nurse!" He hears Layla yelling and pops his head up in her direction. He sees Leland moving around and mumbling things he can't hear. He watches as a nurse comes in and starts checking things.

"Hey honey." He hears Layla say and sees her standing up over Leland. He can't hear what he says because it's all raspy. "She's in the bed next to you. She's sleeping." He hears and sees him slowly move his head over towards him. He tries to sit up but is pushed down by both the nurse and Layla. "You need to stay laying down," Layla says grabbing his hand.

"Ok, we are going to go through a few questions that I need you to answer." The nurse then begins going over questions that Austin's heard too many times. He holds Taylor's hand and moves closer to her.

"Leland's woken up, he's asking for you." He says and looks up to her charts to see if anything's changed. He waits for something to change, but nothing happens. He sighs and lays his head back down. "I'm not leaving you so you better pull through. No listening to the doctors, you will wake up from the surgery and you will be better." He says with tears in his eyes. He can only think about what the doctor had told him. Head surgery plus everything else, they don't expect her to come back after complications in the surgery, but he won't give up.
