Chapter Twenty-nine

"Ok, let's get a move on. Let's go, let's go." Leland says rushing everyone out of the cabins and into the van.

"We're all moving, just take a chill pill. It's four in the morning." Julia says walking down to the van. Leland glares over at her and waits for everyone else. As Austin passes him he grabs his arm and pulls him over away from the two vehicles.

"About yesterday, I'm sorry. It...it reminded me of something that had happened and she is my little sister, and...I just don't want her to go through something like that again. And I know you wouldn't, it's just...when I-" Austin nods his head.

"I get it, Taylor told me about it, but I'm nothing like that person. I won't push her into anything she doesn't want to do, you have my word." He says and Leland nods his head. The two shake hands before walking back to the van.

"Ok, we all in?" Leland asks hoping into the front seat. Layla nods her head and he starts the car.

"Ok, ready for the longest ride of all." He says and hears some mumbled complaints. "Oh come on, it's going to be fun." He says and Layla looks over at him and laughs.

"Yeah, ok. You have fun driving, I'm gonna go to sleep." She says and begins to get comfortable.

"Carson, Julia, you'll switch with Jack and Analyze after 20 hours, while Taylor and Austin will switch with us." He says. Carson nods his head and then closes his eyes. Julia's already asleep leaning on him.

"So, you two gonna stay up with me?" He asks looking in the rearview mirror at Taylor and Austin.

"Not gonna happen," Austin says and Taylor shakes her head already curling up against Austin.

"You'd better find a gas station soon," Layla says practice doing the pee-pee dance in her seat.

"Not my fault we are on a highway with no exits," Leland says looking at the GPS.

"Well, if we aren't at a gas station or a house in like five minutes you need to pull over and let me pee." She says looking around to find there is nothing around them.

"There's a house," Taylor says seeing one on the left. Leland pulls into their driveway and hops out. Everyone watches as he and her run up to the house. Well, Layla waddles up to the house. They watch as an old man opens the door and then Layla runs into the house.

After a few minutes to two walk out and Layla's laughing. When they get into the car they all look up at her. "He told us that one time when he was on a trip he'd crapped his pants because his Mom told him he could hold it." She says still laughing about it.

"You're so lucky he let you in," Leland says starting the car back up.

"Jack says there's a gas station about two miles up, he wants to get food," Carson says looking up from his phone.

"Sure, in two miles there's one," Layla says shaking her head. Leland chuckles and begins to pull out of the driveway. Following Jack and Analyze. They hear the ringing of a phone and look around.

"That's yours, Taylor." Leland says recognizing the ringtone. She grabs her phone out of her shoe and answers it.

"Hello?" She asks feeling stupid that she didn't read the caller ID.

"You picked up for the phone. That's a first." She hears her Dad say and then hears her Mom's muffled voice.

"Hi, Dad. Why'd you call?" She asks laying her head against Austin's shoulder.

"We wanted to see how you guys were doing. You guys on your way home yet?" He asks with a yawn.

"What time is it over there?" She asks worried that they got up really early just to talk to her.

"Doesn't matter. Are you guys on your way back?" He asks again.

"Yup, like fifteen hours in." She says and he laughs.

"So, still a while left." He says and she nods her head, knowing he can't see.

"Yeah, a total of almost 40 to get all the way up there." She says with a smile.

"Did you have fun?" She hears her Mother's voice.

"Yeah, we all did." She says looking at everyone else in the car. They're all talking, but quiet enough so she doesn't have to talk really loud.

"That's good honey, Layla told me you were getting along with Austin." She says and Taylor groans putting a hand to her face.

"Can we not talk about this?" She asks but knows the answer.

"No, I want to know what's going on with my sweetpea." She says and Taylor looks up at Austin. He looks down at her with a smile as he can hear her on the phone.

"Yes, we get along, but don't go and get all gooey on me. We've just been talking a lot and becoming good friends." She says knowing that it's not the whole truth.

"Fine, don't tell me, but I will find out one way or another."

"Trust me Mom, I know. I'm gonna let you guys go, We're pulling up to the gas station." She says and hears her parents say that they love her.

"We love you guys too, bye." She says and ends the call.

"Good friends?" Austin asks in her ear.

"Yeah, not like you've asked me out." She says with a smile and getting up to get out of the van. He just watches as she leaves and sits there stunned.

"She is right, you never did ask her out," Layla says and he snaps his head in her direction not realizing she was still in the car with him.

"Just shut it." He says climbing out of the car and going into the gas station. He grabs a few snacks, pays for them, and then goes back to the van. He's the only one in it when he gets there and he sits there thinking about Taylor. She's really going to make him do the cliche thing.

He sees Taylor exit the store with Analyze at her side. The two are smiling about something and they both look towards him. He looks at them confused and Analyze says something to make her bust out laughing. She lightly pushes Analyze away from her and she's goes to the truck while Taylor walks to the van. "What was that about?" He asks and she shrugs.

"Nothing you want to know." She says and puts a raspberry in her mouth.

"How'd you find those in a gas station?" He asks staring down at little container.

"They had some farmer come by and drop a ton of fruit off, there was only this box left. I had to grab them." She says and he smiles.

"You're addicted to them, maybe I should help you wean off of them." He says going to grab one. She turns away from him.

"I already shared before." She says and he chuckles.

"If I ask you out can I have one?" He asks. She looks over at him with a smile.

"I know we are together, just pushing your buttons, and trust me if I told my Mom we were together she'd be on the phone with you still." She says and he shrugs.

"I think I can handle your Mom."

"Ha, right." She says and he laughs.

"So, I'm allowed to call you my girlfriend now?" He says leaning in towards her. She looks up at with and pretends to think about it.

"I think it's allowed." She says and he smiles.

"Good, because Taylor you are my girlfriend." He says and then kisses her. It's a short kiss because Layla comes into the car.

"Ew, it's my cousin and best friend." She says and Taylor looks over at her.

"Ew, it's my brother and best friend." She says back and Layla laughs. Austin chuckles as the two continue to go back and forth until Leland sits down and gives them a look to be quiet.

"Layla, switch again?" Leland asks as a yawn escapes his mouth.

"Sure," She says and hops out. Leland only wanted her to have to drive once or twice, but he's ready to pass out and doesn't want them to get into an accident. Layla starts up the car and checks to see if Jack and Analyze are ready. Analyze is now driving and nods her head.

Layla pulls out of the gas station and gets back onto the highway.

"I forgot how dark it get's a night," Layla says to Taylor as the two have been talking to each other.

"Yeah, but there aren't many cars out so that's a plus," Taylor says looking around the almost empty highway.

"Yeah, I wish this damn semi would stay in his lane." She says wanting to pass him, but not wanting to get nicked off the road. Taylor looks over and sees that he keeps going between the lines.

"The guys probably half asleep," Austin says looking to see the semi.

"I can't pass him, but I don't want to stay right here until he gets off and he's not even in the right lane, so he's probably going to be on for a while." She says looking in her mirrors. She gave him room thinking maybe he was trying to get over, but he doesn't he just goes and veers into the lane.

"I think you're in the clear, just go past him," Austin says looking around. Layla nods her head and picks up her speed. As she's almost past him he veers into her lane. She moves to her right to avoid getting hit by him but doesn't see the oncoming ramp.

"Layla." Taylor screams seeing the other vehicle, but it's too late. No one get's time to try and slow down and all three collide into each other. Taylor just sees all three come together and winces before the impact hits. She, along with everyone else in the van is thrown around and she hears the yells and screams from everyone else.

Taylor feels like time slows down as she sees the glass break and sees it coming at her. She brings up her hands to protect herself, but can't feel any pain. She feels like the spinning last an eternity, but once it stops her vision begins to get blurry. She tries to keep her eyes open but falls into the darkness.
