Chapter Twenty-two
"Eww, I can't believe you eat that," Taylor says shaking her head at Layla. Layla just rolls her eyes and takes another bite of the fudge. Taylor shivers and takes another raspberry from the container.
"You don't know what good food is." She says after finishing her fudge.
"Yeah, anything not involving chocolate." She says and Layla just shakes her head at her best friend.
"I don't understand you. Not at all." She says. Taylor smiles and puts another berry into her mouth. Leland comes by and steals her container.
"Leland. Give me them back." She says hopping out of her chair to go after him. He holds them high above his head.
"Or what?" He asks. Taylor gives him a look and then grabs his phone.
"I call mom and tell her about that misunderstanding." She threatens. His eyes widen, but then he smirks.
"You wouldn't. You'd get in trouble for it." He says. Taylor finds her number and puts it to her ear.
"Who is she going to believe, her innocent little daughter that's hurt or the older brother that doesn't get brownie points." She threats and he shakes his head. He puts her berries back on the table and grabs the phone from her hand. Taylor sits back down with a smile and plops another into her mouth.
"Oh, hey Mom. Sorry, my phone has been acting up, didn't mean to call you." He says glaring down at his little sister. She gives him a smile and he shakes his head. "Yeah, you wanna talk to her?" He asks and Taylor shakes her head. She mouths 'No.' over and over again. "Alright, she's just eating breakfast. Yeah, she has plenty of time." He says and hands her the phone.
"Devil's spawn." She says and puts the phone to her ear. "Hi, Mom. I gotta be quick so I can get in the shower before we leave." She lies. Leland rolls his eyes and starts talking to his girlfriend.
"Oh, your brother said you were just eating breakfast." Her mother says.
"I'm just about finished, but how have you been?" She asks eating another berry.
"I'm fine, I want to know about you. How's the side feeling?" She asks with worry in her voice.
"I'm fine Mother. It's been really good, I think tomorrow Layla can take out the stitches." She says and then wants to hit herself in the face after.
"You need to go back to the doctor and see if it's ok. You can't just make a guess and say when they need to come out. And you should have an expert take the stitching out. What if something goes wrong when they take them out. I trust Layla, but she's not a doctor and doesn't have the equipment to help if something goes wrong. Taylor, you really should-"
"Mom, Mom, it'll be fine. Layla wouldn't dare touch them if she thought something would go wrong and there's no point in going back to the doctor just to have them send us more bills. It's already going to be a pretty penny to pay back." She says and hears her Mother's sigh on the other side.
"Money isn't a problem, especially when it comes to your health." She says with worry back in her voice.
"I'll be fine Mom. I gotta go though. I love you." She says looking down at her empty container.
"You're going to give me a heart attack one of these days, but I love you too. Tell your brother I love him too." She says and then they end the call.
"Mom says she loves you." She says and hands him his phone back. He takes it with a nod before looking back at Layla. They're talking about something quietly, so she stands up and throws the container out. She feels eyes on her and turns to see Austin looking at her.
He seems to be deep in thought as she walks over to him. He keeps his gaze on her as she sits down next to him. "Hey, you." She says bumping his shoulder.
"Hey." He says back. She gives him a puzzled look, but before she can say anything Analyze throws a shirt at her. She turns her head to her confused.
"I want to see how that looks on you." She says. Taylor picks it up and realizes it's a dress. It's completely white and has a little of design down the middle and at the top. It's got a thin strap over the shoulder leaving about a five-inch gap before it's long sleeves. It's very simple, yet pretty. Taylor stands up and walks to the bathroom, she releases a breath as she realizes she didn't knock before walking in. Once she gets the dress on she looks in the mirror and does a little twirl.
She smiles at herself before walking out of the room. Analyze looks up and smiles. "I thought it'd look good on you." She says and Taylor smiles. Julia then comes up to her and places a white hat on her head.
"Now it's perfect." She says. Taylor smiles at the two.
"Why am I looking perfect today?" She asks curiously.
"Because I felt like getting you dressed up and I needed someone to take that dress from me. I can't fit in it anymore." Analyze says.
"Well, thanks." She says looking at both of them. They nod before going off. She looks back at Austin and sees him talking with Jack. Austin notices her looking over at him and turns his head to smile at her. He looks her up and down and forces himself not to do it again. She has a slight blush on her cheeks as Layla comes up to her.
"Ok, so what Leland and I were thinking, was we do the Alcatraz Island today like planned, then we go to Muir Beach and find somewhere to eat. Then up to Montana to go and meet up with Chloe's parents. We spend a day there, then go to Colorado and are up in the mountains for two days before heading back home." She says going over the next five days.
"That's going to be a long drive back with no places to see." She says with a smile.
"Yeah, a lot of bonding time." She says and Taylor laughs.
"Sounds like a plan to me." She says with a shrug. Layla nods and walks over to Carson and Julia. Taylor turns around and almost runs into Chloe. She's wearing sunglasses and a lot of makeup.
"I was informed of something I did yesterday and I remember it now. I'm really sorry about kissing you, bad things happen when I'm drunk." She says looking down slightly.
"It's fine, just took me by surprise." She says with a smile.
"You wanna know the funny thing about this?" She asks and Taylor nods her head with a confused look. "I've had a huge crush on you for like ever, but now that I've kissed you I realize I just like you as a friend." She says and Taylor laughs lightly.
"Do I kiss that bad?" She asks and Chloe's eyes go wide.
"Oh, no that's not what I meant. I was-"
"I know, I was just messing with you." She says. Chloe shakes her head letting out a breath of air. "And why didn't you ever tell me you liked me?" She asks and Chloe shrugs.
"Didn't want to make things uncomfortable between us for no reason." She says. Taylor nods understanding where she comes from. "And I don't want to get in between you and Austin." She says in a hushed voice. Taylor turns to look at her, but she's already walking away with a smirk on her lips.
Austin comes up behind her causing her to jump at his sudden presence. "What was that about?" He asks.
"Oh, she just asked me out. We plan on going out on a date tomorrow." She says. Austin stares down at her stock written all over his face.
"Wh-what? But...you aren't...are you?" He doesn't seem to be able to form words. Taylor shakes her head and starts laughing.
"She just apologized and told me that she doesn't have a crush on me anymore." She says and Austin squints his eyes at her.
"That was mean." He says and she laughs.
"Why was that mean?" She asks pretending to be innocent. He looks down at her but doesn't know what to say without saying that he's in love with her.
"Because you can't just lay that on a guy, it messes with our heads." He says and she pats his head.
"That's not hard to do." She says and he gasps at her. She laughs before walking away to talk with Analyze. Austin watches as she goes over and starts laughing about something. He looks over and Leland and walks up to him.
"Ok, so after an episode, she's all open and giggly?" He asks in a quiet voice. Leland looks over at his sister and smiles as she's laughing with Analyze about something.
"Most of the time. It's like it clears her head for the day, just having voiced things out, but don't get used to it. By tonight she'll probably be back to be guarded off and being shy." He says with a frown. Austin looks back over to see her looking back at him.
He smiles and realizes this is the real her. The carefree girl with no baggage or things haunting her. She motions him over with a bright smile. He smiles and walks over to her.

"Austin go to the back of the ship. I don't want Taylor freaking out over how many people are in the front." He whispers as they walk along the dock. Austin nods his head and when they make it onto the ship he pulls her to the left. She doesn't fight him just continues to hold his hand. The rest of the group follows behind, and after Leland telling them to kinda block everyone else around them, they begin to talk amongst each other.
Taylor turns to having her back to the group staring out into the water. She steps on the bar at the bottom and leans over a little. She feels an arm come around her side, but doesn't look because she knows it's Austin.
The group slowly stops there conversations to look at the island. Taylor turns around noticing the ship start to slow down. She looks at the buildings like everyone else. A tour guide starts talking to them, but Taylor isn't listening. She lets herself be guided by Austin as she looks all over the island.
When they get into the prison they end up splitting up the groups so there aren't as many in one spot. The first place Taylor and the rest go is to the cells. Taylor walks ahead looking in them and seeing the beds and mundane walls. "It must have been really cold. Everything's concrete." Julia says walking up beside Taylor.
"Yeah, but it doesn't get too cold out here." She says and walks down to the next one. They spend a good amount of time in the cells before going to different rooms of the place. The tour guide continues to talk as no one listens to her.
Each room they go in the group takes a picture of them doing something. Whether it's sleeping, eating, or reading something. They all laugh as they walk into a room that has one bathtub and half bath that they aren't sure what was used for. Chloe, Analyze, and Taylor run up to the tub and pose around it. Julia and Layla join them and Leland takes the picture. The girls all get up to see how it turned out. They all laugh as they tried to look seductive, but failed because they were trying not to laugh.
The guys all pile in the tub and Layla takes the picture. They all tried to do what the girls did, but failed as well. "You guys just look like dorks," Chloe says shaking her head as they all try to get out of the tub. The tour guide says not to really touch or stand on anything, so when they hear her voice. Layla and Taylor start pulling the boys out quickly. They all pretend to be wandering around the room.
"Oh, hello. Did you guys know that in this room-" And they all stop listening.
"If she said something that was interesting every once and awhile I might just listen," Chloe whispers to Taylor. She nods her head in agreement. They all walk out of the room and meet up at the front where they came in. The tour guides try to get them to buy things before letting them leave to go onto the boat and they say they hope they liked the tour.
On the ride back everyone's looking through the photos that were taken with the group. Laughing and pointing at the silly things they did.
Austin looks over at Taylor to see her smile still on her face. He feels himself smiling just at her being happy. She wipes her eyes as she can't stop laughing at something on the phone. She looks up at Austin and tilts her head to her side as if to ask him what. He shakes his head and she smiles rolling her eyes.
He wishes she was like this every day. Wishes that he could make her be able to be like this, just her. Not worrying or thinking about whatever's going on inside her head, just being her happy self.

Austin watches Taylor walk along the shore of the beach. She runs back as a bigger wave comes up. She screams a little as it almost knocks her off her feet. He smiles as she bends down to pick up a seashell. She turns around and looks over to him. She holds it up and comes jogging towards him. "Look at all the colors." She says looking down at it. He glances down before looking back up at her. "Ahh, there's still something in it." She says and runs back to put it on the sand. "Eww, it was slimy." She says rubbing her hands together.
"Most sea creatures are." He says earning a glare from her. She takes a seat next to him on her towel. She tilts her head up to the sun enjoying the warmth. "You're gonna get burnt again." He says.
"I know." She replies back with a smile. She opens her eyes and looks at him. "Come to the water with me." She says getting up. He groans, but get's up anyway. She smiles before walking down to the water. He walks slowly behind her and watches as she bends down again. "It's a starfish." She says and puts on a finger on it. "This creature isn't slimy." She says turning her head up to him.
He smiles and looks out at the water to see a wave coming up towards them. He doesn't get much time to pull her up before getting wet. They wobble on their feet crashing into each other as they try not to fall into the water. Taylor laughs and looks down to see the bottom of her dress wet. She's leaning against Austin trying to regain her balance. She turns and realizes that they're really close. She looks up into his eyes and sees him smile a little.
She feels the wind push her towards him more and he puts his hands on her hips. She puts her hands up to his chest and feels his heartbeat. "You have a fast beating heart." She says clearing her throat, but it doesn't do much.
"Only when I'm around you." He says and she feels her cheeks redden.
"I guess I'm special." She says and he laughs nodding his head.
"You definitely are."
