Chapter Twenty-one
"I still can't believe you did that. You're just so...you." He says sitting on the ground bumping Taylor's shoulder.
"Clearly she was just being rude and instead of others getting mad, I just told her to go. It's not that big of a deal." She smiles with a slight blush.
"Coming from you it was. I just stared." He says and Taylor laughs.
"Yeah, I know." She says and he smiles. They sit watching people begin to leave as it gets dark. The waves continue to crash on the sand and the last people that were out in the water are coming out.
Taylor sees Chloe walking towards them, but she's swaying. "Taayloorrr." She slurs and both Taylor and Austin stand up.
"Chloe, I think you're a little drunk." He says and she shakes her head wildly.
"I'm fine, but I need to do one thing before I go to bed." She turns to Taylor and kisses her. Taylor stands there with wide eyes. Chloe pulls back with a smile. "Just had to do that once." She says and then begins walking. Taylor stares as she sways away from them. Layla comes running up to her and helps stabilize her. She looks back and waves. Austin waves back and looks at Taylor's frozen face.
"Wha-what just happened?" She asks and wipes her mouth from the alcohol that was on Chloe's lips.
"Chloe's a lesbian," Austin says and she blinks, once, twice, and then laughs.
"Chloe likes me?" She asks and Austin nods his head a little. "Well, ok then." She says and Austin gives her a weird look. "Kinda funny the only person that likes me is a girl and I just don't go for that." She says and Austin rubs his neck. She looks up at him waiting for a remark, but he doesn't say anything. "Are you-"
"Jack finally asked me out." Analyze yells interrupting her question.
"Wait he actually asked out?" Austin asks eyes wide and glad to be changin the conversation.
"Yup, he's a little drunk, but he still asked." She says with a beaming smile on her face.
"Thanks, great, where is he?" Taylor asks. She turns around and points. He's with Carson and Julia talking.
"He was all nervous too, it was kinda amusing. Him not being so cocky for once." She says looking back at him.
"That is a first," Austin says.
"Well, I don't know about you guys, but I'm gonna go get some sleep. Well, I'm going to get Jack first so he doesn't end up naked and in the ocean." She says and shakes her head. Taylor sits back down on the sand again and stares out at the ocean.
"It's so beautiful, yet so destructive." She says not really to anyone, just say what came to her mind.
"Yes, but it's only destructive everyone once and awhile." He says softly. Taylor doesn't say anything in response, just continues to stare out.
"You guys should come in soon. It's getting cold." Leland says stopping in front of them. Taylor doesn't move, just looks past him at the ocean.
"We will," Austin says. Leland nods looking down at his sister, but she doesn't look up. He looks back to Austin confused. He waves him off saying he's got it and Layla pulls Leland along. Austin looks over at Taylor. She's pulled her knees to her chest and is slightly rocking. "Taylor?" He questions. "Taylor?" He asks again moving closer to her.
She turns her head to him. "Why can't everything just go away? The noises and thoughts, why can't they just disappear." She asks and he looks at her confused.
"What noises and thoughts?" He asks and she turns her head back to the ocean.
"The ones that make me scared, tell me that others are angry, or that I'm going to hurt someone else. The loud noises that never seem to still. Why can't it just all disappear?" She asks and he doesn't know what to say. He watches her concerned but doesn't know what to do about his concern.
"Taylor, how long have you had those thoughts?" He asks. She shrugs and doesn't answer for a minute.
"They come and go. Sometimes they're there for a week and gone for a month or there for months and then gone for a few days. It's not consistent." She says with another shrug. He looks over at her wondering what caused her to tell him this.
"Taylor we should go inside. It's getting cold." He says and stands up. He holds out his hand, but she stares at it. She shakes her head and stands up.
"What's the point of being here? Not like I'm doing any good." She says and seems to ponder with her thoughts.
"You want to help people that's why you're here." He says and grabs Taylor's arm afraid of where her head might be at.
"But I'll hurt them. I will end up hurting someone. It could be you." She says and he shakes his head.
"You don't hurt people, Taylor. You're a good person." He says pulling her along the beach. The walk all the way up to the room is quiet and Austin won't take his eyes off of her.
When they get into the room Austin sets her down on the couch. She says sitting up and stares off into nowhere. Austin quickly walks to Leland. "Leland, wake up." He says tapping him.
"I swear to God this had-"
"I'm worried about Taylor. There's something wrong." He interrupts. Leland sits up and walks out of the room. He sees Taylor sitting on the couch staring at nothing
"Taylor, are you ok?" He asks. Taylor looks up at him and smiles.
"Of course, why wouldn't I be?" She asks and he looks at Austin confused.
"She was just asking about why she was here. That she thinks she's going to hurt someone, that her thoughts never still." Leland holds up his hand and pulls Austin out of the room.
"When did it start? Her talking about her thoughts." He asks and Austin feels nervousness settle in his stomach. There's something he's still missing.
"Just a few minutes ago. I wanted her to come in and figure what the hell is going on. So what the hell is going in?" He asks. Leland shakes his head and pulls on his hair.
"Because if her anxiety she gets these compulsive thoughts. She goes into what we call episodes were everything that she thinks of she starts to say out loud to us, but she won't remember anything when she snaps out of it. She hasn't had one in a very long time and from what I thought the episodes were done." He says and slams his hand on the wall. "She won't talk in front of me, she seems to be able to hide it from me, but if she's fine talking to you just be there. Don't force her to talk, just be understanding and tell me what she talks about." He says his voice shaking.
"Leland, why is this so bad?" He asks trying to get him to look at him.
"Because she doesn't see a point in life she becomes reckless and doesn't care what she does. She gets panic attacks frequently and if she gets to many it can cause more health issues for her." He says shaking his head.
"More health issues?" He asks confused.
"Taylor is very fragile, physically and mentally. She was born too early and because if that it affected not only her body but her mind. She was getting better, but had a setback." He says shaking his head.
"A setback?"
"An asshole that I really want to hurt." He says and takes a deep breath. "But that will cause Taylor more issues, so I need to move on." He lets out the deep breath and looks up at Austin. "You think I'm just being an overprotective brother when I say don't hurt her, but I'm telling you now. She is fragile and can't handle a lot and if something does happen. I will blame you. She trusts you and seems to be trying to take steps forward, don't you dare end up making her take them back." He says and all Austin can do is nod his head.
Leland nods before opening the door and walking over to his sister. "I love you Taylor, try to get some sleep. We've got a good day planned tomorrow." He says bending down to give her a hug. He looks at Austin before sulking away.
Austin takes a seat next to her. She turns and pulls her legs up to her chest. "I can't sleep, then I see what I will do. I can't see that. I can't see me hurt someone. Someone innocent can't be hurt because of me. I'm a bad person then." She rambles on about how sleeping is going to make it true and someone's going to be hurt.
Austin grabs his phone and tries to find a way to help her. After quickly reading through many articles he turns to her and turns her towards him. "Taylor." He says her name trying to get her attention, but she continues to mumble. "Taylor what would you think if I quit going to school? Just worked wherever." He asks. She turns to him looking confused.
"Why wouldn't you finish? You're smart and a good person. A good person should go to school and help other people. You need to help kids. Help kids so they don't turn out like me. I'm messed up in the head. It's like another person in there that's a big bully. Says things to me, makes me want to do very very bad things. Makes me want to hurt myself sometimes, but I can't because that's wrong. You don't hurt people or yourself. That's bad." She says finishing with a nod if her head.
Austin sees Carson come out if his room. He looks over at Taylor confused. He sees her rocking back and forth. "Taylor you feeling alright?" He asks. She snaps her gaze up towards him. She smiles and nods her head.
He looks at her wearily but walks back to where he's sleeping. "I lied to him. I lied to a friend. Why, why would I do that? Bad, that's bad. What if he finds out? He'll be mad at me. Oh no, he won't want to be my friend. I don't have friends, I need him as a friend. He's a good friend. But not good for you."
"Taylor, just take a breath. Just breathe." He says noticing a panic attack starting. She covers her ears and keeps mumbling. She stands up and shakes her head.
"I wouldn't do that. I'm not a bad person." She says raising her voice. Austin stands up and puts his hand on her arm, but she pushed him back. "No, no, no, no." She keeps saying and covers her ears again.
Jack and Analyze were sleeping on the couch opposite if them and are now awake. Austin shakes his head at them. They keep their mouths shut. "Taylor, you're fine and you aren't going to do anything bad. You are a good person, fight what you are hearing." He says slowly making his way over to her.
She shakes her head pushing her hands harder against her head. He sees tears streaming down her face, but knows not to touch her yet. "I won't do it. They are my friends, I can't do it. Just go away. Go away." She yells backing away from where she was standing. Julia and Carson are coming out from there room, but Austin motions for them to go back. He does the same to Leland and Layla. Lelend holds Layla back as she what's to help.
Taylor opens her eyes and sees Analyze and Jack. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to. I'm a bad person. I'm sorry." She says and Analyze looks to Austin for help.
"Taylor can you tell me why you're apologizing?" He asks and takes another step towards her. She turns to him with bloodshot eyes.
"I hurt them. I physically hurt them. They are my friends and I hurt them." She says and looks back to them.
"Taylor both Analyze and Jack are fine. They aren't hurt." He says and she shakes her head.
"You don't get it. It will happen. I'm going to hurt them. I'm not strong enough to fight the noises and thoughts. I can't fight them anymore." She shakes her head and starts to mumble again.
"Tell me what I don't understand." He says now only a foot away from her.
"It never goes away. They're always there, making me want to do bad things. They know I'm a bad person. A very bad person." She says and hits her head. "Go away." She says and hits her head again. This time Austin grabs her hand and pulls her towards him.
"Taylor you're going to be fine. Just breath with me, in and out." He says holding her to him. He read that the pressure of holding someone makes their heart rate begin to slow down even if they don't want you to be holding them. They just continue to tell them to breathe and don't let go. "Taylor it's OK. You don't have to fight, I'm here. Just breath." He says and she slowly starts to stop fighting against him.
He slowly moves down to the ground pulling her more into him. He knows that everyone is staring at them, but doesn't care. He just wants to help her go to sleep. He sees Leland talk to Jack and Analyze quickly. They nod their heads and go into his room. Then Julia, Carson, and even Chloe who looks to be hung over go into the little side room. Leland looks back at the two on the ground. Austin saying things to calm her down and keeps holding her.
He goes into his room and closes the door. "It is not my pace to tell you what is she's dealing with right now, but I will tell you that she probably won't remember that this happened and she definitely doesn't want anyone of you knowing that this happens to her. I'm sorry that you guys were all woken up, but just please don't say anything. Tomorrow will just be like another day on the road trip. Ok?" He asks. They all nod and he feels a wave of relief go over him.
"We'll just sleep on the ground in here," Analyze says. Leland nods and watches as the other three also get comfortable.
Leland turns his light off and goes back into bed. He pulls Layla into his arms as she cries silent tears into him. "She's going to be fine." He whispers and kisses her on her temple.
Austin sits with her in his arm for many more minutes before even thinking about moving. She'd cried herself to sleep. He picks her up and brings her to the couch. She has her hand tightly wrapped around his shirt and won't let him go anywhere. Instead of trying to change he slides down next to her and pulls her next to him. "You're going to be fine, I promise." He says kissing her on her forehead. He hadn't realized how bad it is, but he's not going to back out. He's not going to run away, she needs help and he plans on being there.

Tightness. Tightness is all she feels. She feels like her whole body is trapped. She starts to twist and turn feeling panicked. She hears everyone's voices all talking to her, but she doesn't understand. They all look at her waiting for an answer, but she can't talk. The words won't form from her lips. They all start to yell and she backs up not knowing what she did wrong. She's pinned to the wall as the people continue to come at her. "Stop, please, just stop." She says sinking down to the floor covering her ears. "Taylor, wake up." She feels her dream start to slip from her mind as she's brought back to the real world.
Austin looks at her concerned as she slowly starts to open her eyes. They hold tears that she's not letting shed. Austin puts his hand to her cheek and she lets one slip down. "Th-they were all talking to me. All-all staring at me." She says putting her hand over his.
"Just a bad dream." He says in a soft voice. She nods her head and gives him a small smile.
"Thanks for waking me up." She says. He nods and she notices that he seems off. "Are you ok?" She asks and he smiles.
"Of course I am. How are you feeling?" He asks, but she feels he means it on a deeper level.
"Good." She says tilts her head to the side slightly. "You seem different, are you sure nothing bothering you?" She asks.
"No, but if you ever need to just let anything out, I'm here. I'll listen and I won't judge you." He says grabbing her hand and putting it into his lap. She looks up into his eyes and sees emotions swirling.
"I know." She says. He nods his head and lays back down. Taylor follows and lays her head down on his outstretched arm. She looks up at him and sees he looking down at her. They hold each other's gaze until Taylor's too tired. Her eyelids slip closed and Austin stays awake hoping that she won't get another bad dream.
