Chapter 3

Tiger lay awake in her bed. It had been 2 weeks since her incident with the hole in the ceiling. She gazed up at it. She stopped for moment. What was that? A noise. It must be outside the cottage. She sat up and got into her grey cloak. she wrapped her face in her mask. It was similar to a ski mask, but it covered your face. It surprised Tiger when she had to put it on. Then she realized that the material was see through. Tiger pulled it over her head. She grabbed her bow and some arrows, and her utilities belt. She glanced down at her arm. The tough bandages on her arm felt weird, considering that her arm was broken. Tiger glanced at her bow. How would she be able to shoot it with an arm that wasn't functional? "At least I have my belt." She put her good arm down and her hand floated above the pouch with the arrow necklace. She would have to tell Bear about her discovery.

Bear was in his room when he heard a noise outside the little cottage. Bear sat up and grabbed his belt, bow, and arrows. Bear nocked an arrow and dew back. As a trained Archer, he could shoot his arrow up to 200 meters away. He opened his door. It swung open easily. It was a habit of Bear's to grease the door hinges. He looked around the room. Tiger was standing with her bow, quiver of arrows, and belt. He smiled a little. Tiger turned to Bear in surprise. "So I'm not crazy." Tiger whispered. He shook his head. "Tiger, go back to your room," he held up his hand as she opened her mouth. "Don't. I'm not finished. Go back to your room and go through the tunnel that lead to the stables. Check Spot and Sky. I'll go around back. And Tiger, Be careful. You have one arm. If you get hurt again, I'll never forgive myself." Tiger nodded and clambered through the painting.

Tiger put her bow and quiver on their nails in which they were hanging on. She pulled out the little dagger, hoping she wouldn't need to use it. It was a shiney silver one, and the other one she left in it's little sheath. The one in her hand was used for signals and was made from the toughest metal in Castle Silverstone. She walked down the tunnel, in stealth mode. As she looked for the light ahead, she heard a crash and someone yelp. Tiger's instincts told her to help the person. But she held back because she knew what the noise was. Someone was trying to take Spot and Sky. How she knew was because when she first rode Spot, she had to bow down to him and he was her horse forever. This is the reason that Archer horses are never stolen. She saw light. Tiger saw a man, about 25 years old, yelling at Spot as he pranced in circles. Tiger leaped out and shouted "Freeze in place mister! I'm armed! Don't move!" The man froze and slowly turned to face Tiger. "What's the little Learner going to do? Shoot me? Looks like you can't with that arm of yours." he sneered at her. Tiger sheathed her dagger and walked up to him. "Don't mess with an Archer." she growled at him. Right after she said that, an arrow flew past the mans' face. Tiger didn't flinch, but the man shrieked in surprise. "Quick Tiger! He's distracted!" she told herself. She reached into a special pouch and poured a tiny bit of the powder in her hand. She put the bottle top back on and put it back into the pouch. "Hey!" Tiger called to the man. He approached her, thinking Tiger was no threat. She blew the powder into the his face. After a few seconds, the man was on the ground, in a deep sleep. "Bear!" she called to her Teacher. No reply. "Were you looking for me?" a voice said behind her. Tiger turned to face Bear. "Impressive. I didn't know you knew what sleeping powder was." Bear said. Tiger nodded toward the man. "What are we going to do with this guy? He broke into our stable, which is considered tresspassing, so, will we bring him to the King?" Bear nodded.

It turned out that the man's name was Justin. He was brought to the King. King Friz sent him to the dungeons for 2 years. While she was at the castle, Tiger had asked Bear if she could visit her sister. Bear had a meeting with the King and Sir Simon, the Battle Teacher. Tiger politely asked Madam Pomel if Crystal could have a break today. Madam had agreed. "Crystal has been working very hard lately. I think she deserves a break." She said. Tiger Walked outside of the castle. She got across the moat and looked up. There was the tower where Crystal's room was. Tiger began to climb up the wall. Slowly and carefully, because of her arm. It was almost healed, and soon she would be able to learn to shoot her bow. At least she could move it a little. As she neared the top, the window to Crystal's room opened. Tiger froze, in case Crystal saw her. nothing happened. Tiger resumed climbing. She go to the stairwell bottom of the East Tower. Tiger was impressed by the view. You could see the whole castle. Crystal lived in an old dungeon. It's bars had been replaced by windows, and it was much cozier. Tiger walked around to the door the lead up to Crystal's room. Tiger opened the door as quietly as possible. She walked up the stairs and knocked on the door to Crystal's room.

Crystal heard a knock on the door. "Who could that be? I have no appointment for anything? Did I miss something that Madam Pomel told me?" Crystal walked up to the door and opened it. "Tiger! What a surprise! Come in!" Crystal invited her sister in. Tiger smiled. "Did you open your window before? It scared me a bit." Tiger asked. Crystal became a little suspicious. "Erm... Yes? How do you know?" Crystal paused and looked at her sister. "Did you climb the castle again?" Crystal asked. "Surprise!" Tiger replied. Crystal rolled her eyes. She glanced at her sister up and down. "You look great!" Crystal said. "Thanks. So do you. That dress fits you perfectly." Tiger replied. She reached into her pouch and pulled out something. "Look at what I found in the storage room!" Tiger handed Crystal the locket necklace. "It's beautiful. She noticed that there was half of a heart in a necklace. "I have the other half of the heart on my necklace." Tiger said as she reached into her cloak and pulled out the necklace with the arrow and other half of the heart. Tiger put it around her neck and tucked it in between the layers of clothing she was wearing. Crystal put the necklace around her neck. "Thanks, Tiger!" Tiger smiled. Crystal realized that Tiger's left arm was stiff. "What did you do?" Crystal asked. Tiger glanced at her arm. "Oh, umm... When I was looking in the storage room, I fell out of it." Crystal was confused. "You fell out of a room?" Tiger nodded. "Well, you see, the room is in the ceiling, and I kind of fell out of the door. And the door's on the floor when you're in it." Crystal could see Tiger had trouble describing what happened. "Well, whatever happened, I hope you don't make anymore stupid mistakes." She said. Tiger nodded. "I've learned my lesson. I've missed 3 weeks of training. I'm behind on a lot of stuff. When that guy broke into the stable, my arm was still pretty damaged." Tiger told Crystal the story of how she broke her arm and the man that broke in. Tiger also told Crystal about her room in the wall. Crystal listened eagerly. Soon, it was time for Tiger to leave. Crystal said goodbye and sent good luck to her sister as she walked down the stairwell toward the bottom of the tower.

Tiger waited for Bear at the Courtyard. She greeted him when he appeared at the entrance to the Courtyard. She walked up to him and looked up at her Teacher's face. "How was the meeting?" Tiger asked. Bear shook his head. "King Friz wants to search the area and for us to live in the castle for one week." Bear's face was troubled. Tiger walked beside her Teacher on the way to their cottage.

In the morning, Tiger had decided to hide in the attic. She took her things and brought them up to a small space she had cleared. She set out 3 blankets for sleeping in, and some medicine just in case her arm started hurting. If Bear go worried, what would she do? Tiger decided to leave him a note.

Dear Bear,

I hope you don't mind not telling the King this, but I guess you could think of this as my first assignment. I plan to reside in the attic. I am challenging myself to "survive" for a week. I'll take care of the house and groom the horses. My arm is feeling fine. I think it is almost healed. I've made you your favorite stew. Tell me if it is okay.

Signed

Your Learner Tiger

Tiger thought that the note and stew for Bear would be fine with him. What if he doesn't take the note? Tiger shook her head. She got down from her temporary sleeping quarters and went to the stables.

Bear woke up in the morning. He looked around the room. Something didn't feel right. Usually, Tiger would be messing around in the kitchen making her favorite berry pancakes. Bear opened the door to his room. Her noticed a note and a small pot. He walked over to the note and opened it. Scanning it quickly, Bear nodded. It seemed logical. Tiger had been a Learner for 6 weeks, and her arm was doing alright. Bear looked into the pot and smelled the delicious stew. He smiled. Bear walked out onto porch and sighed. He went back inside and made himself some coffee.

Tiger had developed a habit of talking when no one was present. She started talking to Spot about what a fine morning it was and when she would learn how to shoot lightning fast like Bear could. She finished grooming Spot when she heard footsteps. Tiger paused and listened for a moment. She recognised Bear's light quick steps. bear stuck his head through the stable doors and smiled. Tiger looked at her Teacher and laughed. "Looks like someone had a good morning." Bear nodded. "I read your note. I think it would be a great idea, but I'd have to tell the King about it." Tiger frowned a little. "Oh, fine. But I don't want to live in the castle. I could visit for the day at one point, but sleeping there is not for me." Tiger said. Bear nodded again. Tiger thought for a moment. "I think that I could visit on Wednesday. Would it be okay with you if I came without you knowing exactly when?" Bear shook his head. "I'd have to know. You're pushing the limits that I have with a five-week old Learner." Tiger nodded. "Okay then. I'll be there around noon time?" Bear narrowed his eyes in thought. "Alright. I'll meet you in the dining hall." Bear and Tiger nodded to each other and Bear turned for the Castle Silverstone. Tiger waved and walked back into the stable.
