"It was madness," I recalled the incident that happened earlier to one of the officers in the rec room, "The whole thing. She-she said that she was leaving and I couldn't let her go. I just couldn't."
That day
"Why'd you make me do it, Betty?" Melody yelled with hot tears running down her red cheeks as well as staining her already puffy eyes. She wiped her runny nose with her arm and sniffled.
Betty sighed, then straightened her slouched posture on the bare bed, "She deserved to die. She was going to leave us remember?" her voice carried a distorted tone. She sounded almost..demonic. Not that her appearance helped any. Her hair was now fiery red and straight. It was as long as Raggedy Ann's, but resembled the smell of burning flesh like the rest of her bony body.
She wore the same outfit and her eyes were black. She was..terrifying.
Melody ran her fingers through her hair and paced the floor. Her breathing became labored. Panicked. Anger and regret took over from there. All she wanted was a friend and a little sister, but when she got one she killed it. She killed it!
The interrogation
"Thank you for coming to us with this, Miss. Hopkins." said the tall, muscular dark officer sitting next to a white, beer bellied officer. The white officer documented everything while the black officer interrogated her.
He looked over at the white officer, who's pen gave the pad exaggerated strokes, then back at me, "Who's Betty?"
I leaned back in my seat with an ear to ear smile. My teeth were yellow and tainted with plaque, which allowed anyone near to know that I wasn't being properly cared for.
"Betty.." I chuckled, then began to bite my lower lip and let my glossy eyes wander about the room. I was clearly fighting back the tears that were eventually going to fall, "She was my best friend. We used to play together all the time, but she left me and never came back."
I scanned the room, then leaned forward in my seat and whispered to them, "Between you and me, I really don't like her so much. She's super controlling and she was the one who made me do..it."
I sat back in my seat with my eyes downcast. It seemed as if even talking about it made the joy that was left in me fade.
I looked up at the black officer. Tears welling in my sky blue eyes, "Is-is Anna okay?"
He sighed then looked over to the white officer, rubbed his own face with his burly hands, then looked back at me. He could tell that it was eating me up, "She's fine. She'll be in a coma for a few months, but yeah. She's a tough one."
My lips began to twist into a joyful smile. My sister isn't dead. I didn't kill her.
"Oh, thank God." I said while chuckling. They didn't seem amused though.
They locked eyes, then began to whisper. Whispering!
They stopped, then continued on with their roles. The black officer leaned forward and smiled, "I noticed that you said that Betty was your friend. What stopped it? The friendship." his voice was hushed and serious.
I leaned forward and whispered back, "She tried to make me kill her. Remember?"
He furrowed his eyebrows, so I continued, since he was obviously confused, "I love Anna. She's my best friend and sister. Betty hated it and she made me try to kill her with that shovel."
His face shifted to neutral as he pondered over--something. When he was finished his face softened towards me, "So, Betty is becoming more of a bully, than a friend?"
I nodded and he continued as he sat up in his seat, "Okay. Don't worry. We'll keep in touch, alright?"
I sat up and frowned downward, "Don't feel bad. It'll be okay. She'll be okay."
They stood up, but I stayed in my seat. Frozen. I couldn't shake the guilt that grasped onto me like a baby koala to its momma. I began to sob. My body racking up and down.
I felt a gentle hand on my shoulder that began to grow into a warm hug. I opened my eyes to see Betty. Fuck..
I began to shiver and I looked desperately at the officers for help. They stared back at me with confused expressions. I whimpered, then mouthed the words: Help me, please.
Their expressions shifted to worry. It was almost harmonic. The black officer walked over to the male orderly that was standing guard at the door leading to the rooms. He began whispering to him and I watched him before my eyes shifted to the white officer who just stood there staring at me.
"The fuck does he want?" Betty's voice sounded worse. Deeper. Raspier.
I forced her arms off by jerking my body away. Betty stood there in disgust, "Excuse me?"
I couldn't look at her, speak or even move when the chill from Betty's tone and breath hit my neck. I was petrified, "You're forgetting who took care of you when your parents didn't even wanna look at you. I played with you when every other kid would run away and call you names. I did! I did! I! Did!"
I began to tremble and the louder her voice raised, the closer I was to crying. Eventually I broke down when Betty started punching me and my attempts at blocking them were to no avail.
The room began to spin as the last hit caused me to fall unconscious.
Hours later
I woke up in a dimly lit room strapped to a warm bed. My vision was blurry, but I was able to make out a silhouette in the shape of a man. It must be one of the orderlies again.
The overwhelming illumination from a lamp nearby made my eyes force themselves shut. I clinched my teeth together and turned my head to the side. I kept my eyes shut as he came closer. His boots giving an exaggerated tap to the wooden floor as he inched his way over.
I could feel his cold hands on my head. Left hand on my upper neck and the right hand on the top of my head. He turned my head until it was straight and I could feel goosebumps appearing on my arms.
The bone chilling sound of metal rattling above my head made me tremble. I felt a cold compress against the bend of my elbow, then came the familiar prick.
I braced myself for the burning sensation to come, but it didn't. I just felt..drowsy.
Time seemed to stand still until he stuffed something hard into my mouth.
I bit down on it after he attached something to my head and before I could mentally prepare myself for the unknown, sparks flew through my body like a rocket in outer space.
I saw a white silhouette surrounded by darkness and heard Anna's small voice, "Ti amo, sorella mia e presto saremo insieme."
