Eight
"Zero?"
"Yes."
"Zero," I repeat, incredulous. "Not even your prom date?"
"Yes, Audi. Especially not my prom date. She was wasted within the hour. I'm not making it up."
The topic at hand is how many people we hooked up with during high school. I don't know how it came up after we finished eating breakfast today, but we're both very interested in it. Either that or we've finally run out of things to talk about.
"But how?" I ask.
Lucas shrugs. "I had a hard time trusting people in high school. I tried to avoid gossip at all costs, and those things just got around quickly. I waited until college."
He turns his attention back to the puzzle we've been working on and fits another piece. It seems to be going a lot quicker now that the edges are all complete.
"Your turn," he says.
"One," I reply. "Although it doesn't really qualify as a high school hookup."
"Why not?"
"It was more of a college thing."
"Explain," Lucas says.
I raise my brow. "Are you sure you want to know this?"
"Definitely," he answers without hesitation.
"Okay—so during the senior year of high school, I went to New York to do the whole campus visit thing. I ended up hanging out with Karen's brother a lot since he was the only person I knew there."
"You hooked up with him?" he asks in shock.
I wave my hand. "Calm down. We only kissed that time, and I was already eighteen—but we did end up dating when I was a freshman in college."
"Did you move to New York because of him?"
I shake my head. "I moved there because I liked the city and the university."
"Hmm," Lucas huffs. "I never liked that guy."
"Why? Because he's older?"
"He shouldn't have been preying on high school girls when he was in college."
"It wasn't like that," I say, throwing a grape at him.
As usual, he catches it and pops it in his mouth.
"Just don't tell Karen because I never told her," I say. "I think she would freak out. Plus—he's engaged now. It would be weird."
"Okay, no more hookup stories. I think I can only handle one."
"Well, you're in luck. It's the only one."
Lucas nods, working on the puzzle with an expression I can't place. It's relief mixed with anger and sadness. Jealousy even. I'm not sure.
I'm surprised we haven't kissed yet. It's been a week now since we've been here. We've been sleeping in the same bed, and it's clear we're attracted to each other, but it hasn't happened. Maybe he's waiting for me to make a move. Maybe he's respecting the doctor's orders of no strenuous activity. Or maybe he's changed his mind about me.
"When are you going back to California?" I ask.
"My flight is booked for Saturday."
Saturday. Today is Wednesday. That only gives us three more days. I can't believe our time together has gone by so quickly.
"When are you going back to New York?" he asks.
"I guess I'll go back the same day. My parents think I'm already there. I'll just go straight from here."
I frown at the thought. For the first time ever, I'm not looking forward to going back. I wish I could spend more days with him here.
"Hey, don't think about it yet," Lucas says, as if reading my thoughts. "We still have time."
Not enough, I want to say. I'm worried that I'm never going to get this again, this moment right here with Lucas.
He inches closer to me on the couch. "Audi," he whispers, lifting my chin.
I catch a glimpse of his mouth before I press my lips against his. It's an instant reaction. Natural. His lips are so soft, so warm. Exactly how I remember them.
He pulls me close until I'm sitting on his lap. One of his hands cradles my head, the other wraps around my lower back, holding me in place. He groans when I thread my fingers through his hair at the same time our tongues meet. My heart crashes against my chest.
Now I remember why I was afraid to kiss him. I knew the moment it happened, he would have my heart. He would own me completely again. Now there's no turning back.
We kiss and kiss and kiss. It's so tender. He's gentle with me, as if any slight movement is going to hurt me.
When I feel like there's no more air left in my lungs and there's a real possibility I might faint, I pull back to catch my breath.
I rest my forehead against his. "Jesus, Lucas. Why haven't we been doing this the whole time?"
He laughs and I know why. They're the same words he spoke after our first kiss. He kisses my lips again.
"You're just as sweet as I remember, Audi." I feel Lucas's breath against my neck as he whispers this, just before kissing me there. He continues kissing around my neck. Every time he presses his lips against my throat, I fall deeper into a haze. "I want you so much," he rasps. "You have no idea."
I can't help but moan at his words. Actually, I do have an idea. I can feel him pressing against me, and it makes me want him just as much.
I think it's why neither of us hears the car pulling up to the cabin, or the click of the front door as it's being opened. But I definitely hear the gasp of a female, followed by a male clearing his throat.
I stop and peek over Lucas in fear. My mom and Lucas's dad stare back at us. My first instinct is to pull away from Lucas, just like the last time my dad barged in on us in my room. This time Lucas doesn't let me go, and he pulls me next to him as we stand up from the couch.
"What are you doing here?" my mom asks, demanding in her tone.
I take in her blow-dried blonde hair and pristine black pantsuit. It's the lawyer look she's perfected over the years.
"I should ask you the same thing," I respond, although it's obvious. Fury builds inside me when she doesn't answer. I can't believe they're having an affair again. Or did they never stop?
"What are you doing with her, Son?" Lucas's dad asks. "You know it's not going to end well."
"What am I doing? What the fuck are you doing?" Lucas spits back. "I love her, so leave us the fuck alone and go ruin your own lives for a change."
His words leave me in shock. Astonished, to be more precise. I don't have time to process what he said because he wraps his arm around my waist and continues.
"Did you know that I've been here for three weeks and didn't once think of calling you?" he says to his dad. "Did you know your daughter had surgery last week and was too afraid to tell you?" he says to my mother. "That's the kind of shitty-ass parents the two of you are. Congratulations. See you in another three years."
"Son—"
"C'mon, Audi," Lucas interrupts, glaring at his dad. "Let's go. They're not worth it."
He guides me to his room, which is thankfully the farthest from where we left our parents. He closes the door and proceeds to pack our things. Most of my things are in here too since I basically moved in with him, and I notice he's throwing both of our things together in our bags.
"Get dressed, Audi. We're leaving."
How can he be calm right now? All I can think about is grabbing all the decorations in the room and throwing them against the wall.
Lucas stops packing and comes towards me. "I know you're mad. I'm fucking mad too. Just hold it in until we're in the car, okay? I'm going to check the other room, but please get dressed so we can leave. We need to leave now before I do something stupid."
I nod, and he quickly leaves the room with my bag. I gulp, taking a moment before finding my snow boots and slipping them on. I put on a sweatshirt and use Lucas's cap to cover my wild hair, then I make myself useful by packing our remaining things in the bathroom.
I'm putting on my coat when Lucas speeds through the door. "You got everything?" he asks, grabbing the remaining bag on the bed.
"Yes."
He slings it around his free shoulder and takes my hand. "Let's go."
I follow him out the door. I don't bother looking back.

Author's Note: Claudia and Lucas can't seem to catch a break and were gloriously interrupted (again)!
Were you surprised to see their parents show up? And still together?!

The song of the chapter is "I Found" by Amber Run.
