Chapter 5
Evie explained that her brother is the leader of a gang in this town known as the, "Sidemen". She said she could try and hook Josh and Simon up with a job. All three walked back into the section Josh and Simon had their fight. However, they didn't mention that. Evie walked down the sidewalk as if she owned the place. A blue mustang pulled up next to them.
"Hey, Evie." a boy inside greeted. He has that look on his face as if he think he's all that. At a closer look Josh recognized the guy as the one who chased him when Simon split away.
"Sup, Lewis." Evie leaned into his car window.
"Where are you headin' with these two boys?" he questioned.
"Off to pay a visit to my brother." she smirked.
"Want a ride there?" he offered.
"Sure." she shrugged. "You two can get in the back." Evie instructed. Josh slid in first, and then as Simon did, he saw Lewis narrow his eyes quickly. He knew they were the two trespassers from last night. Luckily he didn't say anything, and kept his mouth shut instead. "Guys this is Lewis. He's the second in command." Evie informed them.
"You guys from around here?" Lewis asked, making a left turn.
"No, not even close." Josh shook his head. A few minutes later, Lewis pulled into a rundown neighborhood. He parked in front of a white house that has a small chain gate in the front. Evie got out, so Josh and Simon did the same. Then Lewis did as well.
"Lewis, you don't have to come with me." Evie said.
"I know but the door's locked. Plus I wanna get my deck of cards." Lewis explained.
"Locked? The door's never locked." Evie debated. Lewis unlocked the front door and let Evie and her friends in first. He ran over into another room and then came back with a packet of cards. When he left Evie looked over at Josh and Simon and said, "He's the gambler of the group."
Josh doesn't exactly like gangs. He has to be extra careful with what he says. The experience he's had with them in the past aren't the best. Gangs are very different from straight up criminals like him and Simon. Basically gangs are like, "Hey you wanna go hustle money illegally?" "Yeah I know a great bar to do that at". While criminals are like, "Hey I feel like robbing someone's house today." "Yeah lets go". In other words, gangs tend to be more subtle and under the table.
"Follow me." Evie led them down into a basement. It wasn't lit very well but it was large. With a table and chairs, a couch, and a few kitchen appliances. Three other guys sat, huddled around a table, while a fourth was lying on the couch drinking a beer.
"Hey beautiful." one of the guys at the table notified them being here. The rest of the boys turned around.
"Watch your mouth." another barked at the other, throwing an empty can at him.
"Shut up, Cal, you know he doesn't mean anything by it." Evie reassured him. "Besides, I came here with some gentleman who are hoping to work something out with you." she informed him.
"Wait," he eyed them up and down. "You're the two guys we got into a fight with yesterday." Cal scowled. He was the tall guy with ginger hair.
"That fight was with my brother?!" Evie said disbelief.
"We tried to be nice and just give you a warning but that one," Cal pointed at Simon, "thought it would be funny to play games. Looks like he learned his lesson." Cal laughed at Simon's black eye.
"Sure, he's an asshole, but Josh here is cool." Evie defended. Simon just crossed his arms and looked away.
"Sorry, but no. I'm not willing to make deals or any sort with a couple of loners." Cal denied. Josh and Simon looked at each other on the word "loners". As much as they wanted to call that statement false, it was true. Over the past two years they have become loners. This moment was a realization for them.
"Just a couple of guys who are gangster wannabes and act all tough when they're really chattin' shit." the guy on the couch called them out. Simon took the beer can out his hand and tossed it up into the air. He then quickly flicked out switchblade and threw it at the can, piercing it. The can fell to the floor on impact and began to leak.
"We're what?!" Simon glared at him. Cal leaned back on his chair.
"Evie take them to my room. I have to finish this game of blackjack." Cal commanded. She nodded her head and pulled the two upstairs. Josh threw his arm around Simon's neck, with a smirk.
