Chapter 8
Evie trudged into the kitchen, to find her brother drinking chocolate milk. She went straight to the fridge and poured herself a glass of orange juice. They didn't greet each other with a good morning because they don't normally.
"Did Lewis ever come home last night?" Evie asked.
"Nah, must've passed out." Cal guessed.
"Typical." Evie scoffed.
"Why are you helping out these guys if you don't seem to like them?" Cal questioned. He sat down across from his sister.
"No, I just don't like Simon. Josh is a nice guy and Simon just happens to follow him around." Evie explained.
"I swear if these two try to pull anything, I'm kicking you out." Cal threatened.
"Oh, hush, you would never do that. I'm your only family." Evie argued. Before Cal said anything else, he heard arguing in the other room.
"Don't try to be the bigger man or you'll get us fucked!" one of scolded. Most likely it was Josh to Simon. They both walked into the kitchen.
"Hi." Simon waved.
"So do you guys eat breakfast or not?" Josh asked.
"If you want breakfast you gotta make it yourself. I'm just giving you a place to live, this isn't no hotel." Cal snapped. Josh put up his hands defensively. "Anyways, I need to talk to you guys. I've got my first job for you and it's a big one." Cal emphasized. Evie watched as Cal took them down the hall. "So, there's this guy I need you guys to get rid of. Tonight." Cal informed them. "You don't need to know why but what you do need to know is, anywhere after ten pm he will leave his house to go his girlfriend's. I need you to just," Cal swiped his hand past his throat, "him without anyone knowing." he finished off by giving the man's address.
"Okay but do you have any masks we can use or something?" Josh asked.
"Masks? No, why do you need that?" Cal looked at him as if he was crazy.
"Because in case anyone does see they won't be able to identify us. Plus, if we don't need them now we'll surely need some in the future." Simon implied.
"I can buy some at the costume store for you." Evie came around the corner. Josh shook his head.
"That won't work because people will describe what the masks looked and then the owner will report how someone, you, just bought those ones and the police will come for you. Getting you in deeper trouble." Josh advised. "We'll just steal some the proper way tonight before we camp outside his house."
"Evie, you shouldn't be listening to my conversations." Cal pointed.
"I can't help it, Cal." she shrugged.
"How many times do I have to tell you not to call me 'Cal'?" he groaned.
"Sorry, 'Freezy'." Evie snickered.
The sun set at eight pm and it was now an hour later. Simon and Josh set out to the costume store. They have to make a good first impression, even the smallest of mistakes is not acceptable. They looked inside the windows of the dark store. They couldn't just bust in so they went around to the back in hope there is a door. Lucky for them there is. Simon picked the lock and they entered ever so carefully. They aimlessly walked around the store, looking for storage. When they found it they saw some boxes with different masks. Perfect. Now they could each take there own and no one would ever know because it's just one of twenty or so. They left, closing the door behind them, and headed for the man's house.
"Now you know what the plan is right?" Josh double checked.
"Yep, just hide behind the car and then when he walks over, dead." Simon restated. He was actually pretty excited about this. It had been forever since they did something like this.
"Josh? Simon?" someone called their names. The two turned around and saw a person they never thought they'd see again. It was Ethan. This look of confusion and disbelief appeared on Josh's face.
"Ethan?" He ran over to the other side of the street. "Why the hell are you here?" Josh asked. He actually felt happy to see the boy again. Before Ethan could answer Simon interrupted.
"This is a lovely reunion and all but... Josh we gotta go. It's nine forty five." Simon pulled Josh's hand.
"Right. Ethan follow us but don't say a word." Josh ordered. Ethan nodded cautiously and followed them. Josh and Simon ducked behind a car. They put on their masks. Josh slapped his hand over Ethan's mouth, holding him close. They waited patiently.
(This part is a little grim) Then the man walked over to his car. All three were on the passenger side so he couldn't see them. Simon popped up and grabbed the man's shirt collar, pulling him on top of the hood. Simon quickly slit the guy's throat and then put a cloth on his neck so the blood wouldn't drip on anything. He dragged him into the alley, stabbing him one more time for good measure, and threw his body into a dumpster.
Ethan sat there with pure horror on his face. The three quickly left the scene to a safer place to talk.
"Sorry you had to see that." Josh apologised.
"Jesus. I didn't think you guys actually killed people." Ethan whispered. He was aware that he shouldn't be too loud.
"We don't normally. It's just for money." Simon explained.
"You're killing people for money?!" Ethan gasped.
"What did you expect from a couple of criminals?" Josh reasoned.
"True, but still." Ethan shrugged.
"Besides we haven't done anything like that since we jumped off two years ago." Josh added.
"If you kill random people then how come you're so protective of me?" Ethan went ahead and asked. It's something he has always wondered since the day they drove up the mountain.
"I don't know. Because I like you and you deserve to live?" Josh wasn't really sure. "What are even doing down here?" he changed the subject.
"I'm going to this private school with Vik our parents sent us to." he replied. "But guess what I found out today? Tobi, the police officer, is one of my teachers."
"Hell, everyone's here. But JJ's in jail right?" Josh prayed.
"Uh, actually no. After you landed in the water he sprinted off and no one has caught him or saw him since." Ethan told them.
"Let's just hope he's far away from here." Simon crossed his fingers.
