Chapter Nineteen.
I'd made sure not to disappoint.
When Hunter followed me into the living room I pushed through the crowd of Josh's friends and with zero fear or inhibition I climbed up on the coffee table and started dancing. Hunter might think it's hard to dance to metal rock, but I knew better. I was also feeling incredibly drunk. I whipped my hair around and jumped up and down as everyone cheered me on, Hunter standing back a little and smiling as he shook his head in amazement. The way he watched me only made me continue.
Chloe came over to Hunter's side, trying to get his attention but he wasn't listening to a word she was saying to him. I only smiled when she glared at me before grabbing Micha and the two of them left the party.
After two songs my head was pounding and I nearly lost my footing before Hunter's hands were under my arms and pulling me off of the table, making some of the others boo him.
"Come on, Ozzy." He laughed over the music. "I think they've seen enough."
I groaned at him but I was secretly glad I was down on sturdy ground again. I don't know what he had been drinking, but after my own beer and a half plus his drink, I was feeling really dizzy...and hot. Without thinking I grabbed the bottom of my hoodie and started yanking it up, not noticing that I had ahold of my tank too.
"Holy shit, Kit!" Hunter yelled, grabbing me. I yanked away in confusion, the hoodie covering my face but then I felt his hands on the bare skin of my stomach, pulling my shirt back down. I didn't struggle against him as he helped free my head from my hoodie. "That wasn't what I meant when I said they'd seen enough." He laughed.
"Oh my god." I mumbled, dipping my face into my hands to hide. "I can't believe I just did that."
Hunter pulled my arm and led me up the hall to his room, pushing me inside.
"You sit." He smiled, pointing over to the bed. "You need water."
I tripped over my own feet twice going to the bed. "Water...yes, good." I mumbled into his amazing smelling comforter as I landed on it face down. I heard him laughing at me but I couldn't muster up any embarrassment. Instead as I laid bent over on the bed I kicked off my shoes and then crawled up onto the center of the bed. "What kind of fabric softener do you...you use?" I hiccupped.
"Who knew you were such a light weight?"
"I did." I nodded to myself, trying to raise my hand.
I heard him shut the bedroom door and then pad across the carpet into his bathroom, running the water. He came back into the room and sat at the foot of the bed, pushing my shoulder until I rolled onto my side and looked at him. He was holding back his cute smile as he pulled my hand out from under me and pushed the cup of water into it. "Drink." He urged.
"I'm doing it because I want to, not because you told me to." I informed him as I took a few long sips. "What the heck did I drink?" I asked. "I feel like...good, but like bad and..." I laid my head back down, looking up at him through foggy eyes.
"Tequila." He shrugged. "And red bull."
I sat up fast, my head swimming and I smacked my hand on the bed. "Whelp, that explains it!" I practically shouted. "I'm not allowed to have tequila."
Hunter laughed loudly, the sound ramming around inside of my echoing head. I didn't want to laugh too, but I could help it. I flipped back on the bed, stretched out in the middle on my back and help my stomach as I got into another giggle fit, this time without being tickled.
"I didn't know there was a certain type of alcohol I needed to keep away from you, plus, you're the one who stole my drink." He pointed out. I could feel him watching me from where he was still sitting at the foot of the bed. "I guess that old song about tequila making her clothes fall off was written about you."
With that comment I covered my face and stopped laughing. "God, how bad was it?" I shuddered. "How much did you see?"
I peeked out of my fingers to see his face. He was looking down at the bit of my stomach that was exposed between my tight tank and my jeans. I sat up, pretending not to have noticed and I looked into his eyes. "Well?" I prompted him again.
"Hardly anything." He said, but something in his eyes told me there was more. "I covered you before anyone had a chance to see."
I groaned loudly again and put my hands back over my face. "I didn't ask how much they saw. I said how much did you see?" When he didn't answer I grabbed my chest, unsure if I had remembered to put on my bra before I left or not. I felt it and a little of my mortification dissolved for now. "Thank god I'm wearing it." I sighed.
Hunter couldn't stop from laughing again. "My god, Kit, you thought you'd flashed the whole party your boobs?" He chuckled.
"Um, yeah."
He shook his head, reaching over to mess up my hair. "Nah, but you gave a pretty good look at that nice lacy bra of yours."
I accidently held his stare and my mind wouldn't let me look away. He was looking at me like...My head stopped altogether when he turned slightly and started to crawl up the bed.
He's about to kiss me. I'm about to kiss Hunter.
His eyes were dark and his lips parted as he crawled towards me. I lied back again, waiting for him to lie down on top of me-
And then he plopped down beside me instead, pulling a pillow up and fluffing it a little before he lied back on it, tucking one hand behind his head and grabbing the remote from the side of the bed. He wasn't even looking at me.
"Let's watch some TV until you sober up." He said coolly and I wanted to die inside.
I'd actually just thought we were about to like make out on his bed. I was sure I'd seen something in his eyes while he was looking at me, but maybe that's why I'm not allowed to drink tequila. It makes me stupid, and it makes me hot. In all kinds of ways.
I picked the water back up and chugged the rest.
"Atta, girl." Hunter laughed beside me.
Totally embarrassed by myself and the way my mind had just been working I laid down on my own pillow, not even making it far enough into the trailers to know what movie he'd picked out before I passed out.
I tried to roll over, but my body was stuck.
I opened my eyes, the sound of birds chirping confusing me. I glanced around the room, realizing I was in Hunter's bed I tried again to sit up, but I couldn't move. I stilled when I felt him cough a little in his sleep. I tilted my head back and came face to face with a deeply sleeping Hunter. He was laying behind me, both of his arms wrapped around me and one leg tossed over the top of mine.
What the hell had happened last night?
I remember coming over, and I know I had a little to drink but...and then it hit me. It all came flooding back like a bad dream.
Me rolling around in the kitchen floor, almost kissing Hunter. Me dancing on the table, then pretty much giving everyone who was here a peep show. I wanted to sink into the mattress and never have to come back out. The worst of everything though was my heated memory of the way my body felt when I saw Hunter coming towards me on the bed. I remember how his eyes gave me chills but lit me a flame at the same time. I remember wanting it to happen. More than I'd wanted anything else in a long time.
I wanted Hunter to touch me. To kiss me. To be with me last night.
And the worst thing about all of that is that last night I would have let it all happen. Even thinking of it now I remember exactly what the sensation was like when he held me in the kitchen, his hands on my skin and in my hair.
Hell, I might would let him right now.
The sounds of birds came to me again and I remembered I'd made plans to see Jessica for breakfast this morning. I groaned out loud and Hunter's body jolted slightly. His body was suddenly untangled from mine and though I could breathe better without him, I was left freezing without his warmth.
"I must have fallen asleep." He mumbled, rubbing his eyes as I rolled over in bed to face him. "I meant to sleep on the couch." He peeked over at me as I shielded my eyes from the light coming in through his window. "I told you that you were going to regret stealing my drink in the morning." He laughed a little.
Just the thought of drinking made me want to vomit.
So much had happened last night, yet nothing had happened last night.
My head was everywhere all at once as I sat up and looked down at him.
"We should talk about last night." I whispered.
"What about?" Hunter furrowed his brows and sat up, pulling his knees up under the blankets and I noticed he wasn't wearing a shirt. My eyes were instantly brought down to his sculpted chest and the curve of his shoulders and neck. On the left side of his chest, right over his heart he had a tattoo. I reached out instinctively and brushed my fingers against his brother's name and the two dates. The date of his birth, and the date of his death. He had been so young.
I left my hand there, his heart beating against it as my mind drifted to my own brother.
Hunter slowly reached up, taking my hand in his, but then he pulled it away from his chest and placed it down on the bed before he pushed away the blankets and knelt down to pick up his shirt.
"I'm sorry." I whispered, holding my rejected hand to my own chest like he'd burned it, which it kind of felt like he had.
He smiled lazily, eyes wide and happy like usual. "It's cool, you're still drunk." He shrugged.
I tilted my head, confused by what he meant. "I guess." I muttered, although I knew I felt fine.
I got out of bed, pulling on my shoes and then sat back down, unsure of where to go from here. Hunter was busying himself around the room, getting dressed and then brushing his teeth in the bathroom. When he came back out, he glanced down at his phone, then looked back up at me. "I've got to get to post to check over my stuff." He told me.
I nodded, standing and feeling like he was kicking me out. Another tinge of rejection stung in my chest as I walked behind him through the apartment, grabbing my hoodie on the way to the door. He literally meant he was leaving now. He walked me over to my car, opening my door for me.
I started to get in, but I stalled, turning back to meet his deep blue eyes. He seemed to be looking anywhere but back at me. "Hunter, what's wrong?" I asked.
He slapped on the crooked smile, leaning against my open car door. "Nothing, Kit, why?"
I stammered for a second. "Look, I know I was drunk last night, but don't you think we should talk about what happened last night?"
He furrowed his brows, looking at me like I was crazy. "Nothing happened last night." He said dubiously.
I nodded, feeling my face burning red. "I mean, I know that, but...what about what almost happened in the kitchen?"
He shook his head at me again. "I don't know what you're talking about, Kit." He shrugged. "You and I were both plastered, if something almost happened then it was just because we were drunk. No need to hash that out."
I couldn't explain why, but tears were stinging the edges of my eyes.
"Hunter, what is this?"
"What?"
I put my hand onto his chest again and looked up into his eyes, searching for the look he was giving me last night. Instead, he looked back at me with disinterest. I knew saying what I was thinking was only going to make it worse, but I couldn't hold back the words.
"Us, Hunter." I explained. "What are we?"
He ducked his head a little, then he looked back at me, taking my hand again and squeezing it once before he dropped it back at my side. "We're friends, Kit." He said simply, then pulled out his phone again, checking the time. "I've got to get going," He said as he pulled me into a one sided hug. "I'll text you later." He said over his shoulder as he walked away, crossing the parking lot to climb into his truck.
I was cold.
My whole body, my mind, my everything. Everything was cold as I mechanically got into my car, turning the key as my cold tears streamed from my eyes. I glanced up into my rearview mirror as he backed out, his truck right behind me for a second and it looked like he was looking at me too. I brushed the tears from my face and he sped away, leaving me sitting and crying in my car.
I didn't know what else to do, so I pulled out my phone, texting Jessica that I was on my way home if she was still wanting to do breakfast. She deserves to know the truth, and now at least I can tell her the whole truth without feeling like I'm lying.
I've been lying to myself this whole time that he and I were just friends. I was just a friend to him, but I had fallen for him. Just like all the other girls before me. Just like Chloe. I'd gotten swept up in him and let myself get too close. At least Jessica can take pleasure in the fact that I'm feeling totally broken now.
When my phone started to ring I expected to see Jess's name, but when I glanced at it, it was Sarah. I wiped the tears away and tried to sound normal as I answered. Her chilling voice only further cut through me, making me feel below the lowest of lows.
"I know where you are and what you've been doing." She said simply.
My heart jumped to hyper speed. "Sarah, I can explain-."
"Save it." She snapped. "You're having breakfast with Jess today?"
"Yes." I started crying again. "I'm going to tell her everything, I swear. Plus, it's over anyway. I mean, it never even started."
She paused for a minute, then cleared her throat. "Tayler, whatever you do, you can never tell her what you did." She said seriously. "I mean it. Keep it ended, and keep it to yourself."
