Chapter Seven.
I slowly blinked my eyes open, trying to get the fogginess out of my head. All I could think about was that damn movie. Why had I wanted to watch Pearl Harbor? The whole premise of that movie is two best friends that both fall for the same girl. Rafe had Evelyn first, but Danny swept in and stole her away. I'd always disliked Danny in the back of my mind for betraying his friend, but yet, here I am, waking up on a barely familiar couch of the guy I only know because Jessica introduced me to him.
"Fuck." I muttered out loud when I rolled over to see that it was already a quarter till noon. How late had we stayed up? The last thing I remember was deciding to close my eyes just for a second and feeling Hunter rub his foot back and forth against mine. "Oh my god," I whispered, sitting up covering my face with my hands. "I'm freaking Danny."
I stood up, my head rushing a little and I swayed as I regained my balance and rubbed the kinks out of the back of my neck. I needed to find my stuff and get home. I went to the kitchen first and pulled my now dry clothes out of the dyer and I quickly put them on right in the middle of the kitchen, putting Hunter's clothes he'd lent me on the counter. I looked around for my purse and keys but that's when I remembered I had gotten undressed in Hunter's bathroom and left my stuff in his room.
I sighed to myself, wondering how in the hell I'd let myself get into this predicament, and I tiptoed down the hall and pushed his bedroom door open slowly. The curtains were all drawn and his lights out, but I could see him sprawled out on his bed, on top of the blankets, in nothing but his boxers. His head was turned away from me and he had a pillow balled up under his head, his left foot dangling from the mattress. When I caught myself smiling, I quickly moved into the bathroom, ducked in the door to grab my things, then rushed out of the room, and out of his apartment.
I sped home, feeling like I was still dreaming or something. I'm not this kind of girl. I don't go behind my friend's backs, I don't entertain their boyfriends, I am not this person. I don't even spend the night with a guy who isn't someone else's. I can't remember the last time I slept over at a guy's house.
As soon as I think it, I remember that that part is a lie. I remember vividly the last time I stayed with a boy, and it was years ago. I banish thoughts of that night and that boy back into the darkest depths of my mind where he belongs. This is just another reason why I don't get close to guys in general. Being close to someone like that just gives them the power to hurt me the same way that...I won't even give him the satisfaction of thinking his name inside my mind.
As soon as I pull up to my apartment, I see my second worst nightmare.
"Fuck, fuck, fuck." I turn down my radio and smile as I park my car in the space right next to Jessica's and I wave at her and Macy where they stand out on the curb, looking at me with wide worried eyes.
I slowly got out of my car and no sooner than my door was open, they both start yelling.
"What the hell, Tayler?" Jessica snapped and my heart sank. She must have found out about what I'd done last night. "How could you let us worry about you like that?" She crossed her arms over her chest and pouted her full lips at me.
"I'm sorry." I muttered, meaning it more than they knew.
"Where were you?" Macy asked as she hugged me. "You never just disappear like that. I was ready to file a missing freaking persons report."
"Yeah, what happened to you last night?" Jess asked, pulling her brows together.
I pursed my lips, my heart frantically beating against my ribs. "I, um, I went to the concert." I admitted and Jessica widened her eyes ever so slightly, like she wasn't trying to show how surprised she was that I'd actually go without her.
"You went?" Macy asked. "Who'd you take?" She asked, a little sourness in her voice. "Jess said you had an extra ticket."
"Oh, well, I did, but I didn't feel right giving them to one of my friends when they weren't really my tickets, so I sent Hunter a message on Facebook, trying to give him back both tickets, but he said that he didn't want them and he said I should go with his friend Aaron who did want to go, so that's what I did." I was surprised with myself at how easily the lies just fell out of my mouth, one after another. I never lie, especially not to my best friends, but there it was, a big fat doozey of a lie to cover up for the much worse thing that I'd done last night.
Jess and Macy both looked less than convinced, so I kept going. "I met Aaron and Dave at the concert and I kind of hit it off with Aaron and I went back to his place with him after the concert and we watched some movies and I fell asleep."
"You slept over at a guy's house who you'd just met?" Jess asked lowly.
I nodded slowly, waiting for them to bash on me about how stupid that was or how dirty it makes me, but instead, they both started giggling and smiling. "We are finally rubbing off on you!" Macy clapped.
"I can't believe it!" Jessica smiled brightly. "I'm so proud of you."
They both turned around and started walking up the stairs to my apartment laughing back and forth with each other about whether or not I was being modest when I said we'd fallen asleep watching movies. I just let them speculate, sighing in relief that they'd bought my lie and that I might just be in the clear.
While Macy was unlocking the door, Jessica's phone started to ring and she squealed and started jumping up and down. "Oh my god, it's him!" She cheered, then she stilled herself, shushed us both and brought the phone up to her ear, smiling like he could actually see her.
I kicked myself for not texting or calling him or something to tell him what my lie was. Now he's going to tell her exactly what I did last night and with who.
"Hello," She purred into the phone, then she giggled at whatever he said. "Oh really?" She smiled, then covered the mouth piece. "He said he's been thinking about me all night." She whispered to Macy and me, then she moved her hand. "Well, I hear you played a little matchmaker last night." She told him and I wanted to run away and hide in my room for the rest of my pathetic existence. This is it, I held my breath for the fallout. "Yeah, Tayler told me that you set her up with your friend Aaron last night." She threw a crazy smile at me. "You know she slept over at his house!"
"Jess, shut up." I groaned, pushing passed her to go into the living room and crash on the red leather sofa.
"I know, it's amazing, you'd have to know Tayler to understand why it's such a big deal, but your friend must be pretty cool. Maybe we can all double date sometime." Jess was saying as she walked into the room. "Well, duh." She rolled her eyes, then she froze, her eyes wide like saucers. "Really?" She asked and I felt the fear rising in me again. "Dinner? I'd love to." She purred. "Ok, see you tonight." She said coolly before hanging up the phone and going into a full circle jump while screaming. "I have a date tonight with Germany!"
"Jess, that's awesome!" Macy clapped with her. "Where are y'all going to go? What will you wear?" She said even more seriously.
"Something that shows off a little something, but I also don't want to look like I'm giving it away for free, you know?" She said. "I was thinking my pink strappy dress that's really good for my legs, and my tan looks great right now, and it shows just enough boob without it being too booby."
I nodded from the couch. "With the white wedges or your black cowgirl boots?" I asked, trying not to give anything away in my voice.
Jess brought her hand up to her chin, wrinkling her nose as she thought. "Actually, what about those new thigh high brown boots that you got last week?" She smiled at me, biting her lip.
"Oh, yeah." I nodded. "Those would be perfect for that."
"So I can borrow them?" She tilted her head.
"Of course you can."
I flipped on the TV and mindlessly scrolled through the channels while Macy and Jess continued to plan things for tonight. My phone started to ring in my purse and I pulled it up onto the couch and slid my phone out enough to see who it was.
I nearly pissed my pants. I felt my face go hot and I tried to let my hair fall in front of my face a little to veil me from my friends as I ignored the call. Not only had Hunter saved his number into my phone under the name Nice Ass, but he'd also accompanied it with a picture of himself grinning that annoyingly effective sideways grin.
I shoved the phone back down in my bag and tried to act cool, but it started to ring again.
"Who is it?" Jessica asked, almost sounding annoyed that my ringing phone was interrupting her precious date planning for tonight.
"It's just my mom." I said quickly, hitting the ignore button again. "I'll call her back in a little while." I shrugged as I shoved the phone back into my bag and stood up. More lies, just spewing from my mouth. "I need a shower." I laughed nervously and Jess and Macy both looked at me weirdly.
"You sure you're ok?" Macy asked, her face pinched and eyes narrowed at me.
I tried to give her a convincing smile. "Yeah, I'm just tired." I said. "I didn't get a lot of sleep last night."
"I'll bet you didn't." Jess winked, biting her lip around a smile as I walked passed her.
"You need help." I muttered around a laugh as I went up the hallway.
Jess giggled and turned to watch me go into the bathroom. "You're right, but while we're on the subject of help, you're going to come over later to help me get ready right?" She asked, giving me the puppy dog eyes. "Six thirty, see you then." She smiled, then turned back to Macy.
Jessica never actually asks for anything, she just tells you sweetly what you will be doing and throws you one of her unbeatable smiles to make you ok with it.
I ducked into the bathroom, locking the door behind me as I pulled out my phone again, clearing and deleting the two missed calls and then I turned on the shower and stripped down. I made the water so hot that my skin was red on impact and I scrubbed my body, singing lightly to myself and trying not to think about Hunter anymore.
However, that was only made harder when my phone kept ringing outside the shower.
Finally I gave in, ripping back the shower curtain and pulling my phone into the shower with me.
"What do you want?" I snapped into it.
"Geeze, Kit, is that anyway to answer the phone?" Hunter's cocky smooth voice filled my ear.
"Why are you calling me?" I asked harshly. "Jess was in the room with me!"
"I'm sorry, I didn't realize." He said more sincerely. "I just wanted to make sure you made it home ok since you snuck out of my house this morning."
I rolled my eyes. "Noon is hardly the morning, but yeah, I'm fine, which you knew since I was standing right next to Jessica when you called her and told her about how much you thought about her last night." My voice came out angrier than I'd meant and I feared he'd think I was being jealous. "Anyway, she told you that she'd talked to me, so obviously I was fine."
"Ok, I was just checking." He said, sounding a little wounded himself. "While I've got you though," He added, his regular confidence creeping back in. "I didn't realize that Aaron had made such an impression on you."
"I was ambushed as soon as I got home and I didn't know what to say." I admitted.
"Out of all of the other lies you could have made up, which was pointless since there was nothing wrong with last night, or any of the other guys you could have chosen, you picked Aaron?" Now he was the one sounding a little jealous himself.
"He's just the first one I could think of." I sighed, backing back under the water spray because I was getting cold.
"I guess you'll owe him a date now if you want him to go along with your story."
"Whatever." I snapped.
There was a long pause, like he hadn't been prepared for that answer. "I guess I will give him your number then." He said distantly.
"Alright." I sighed.
"Kit?" Hunter asked after a second. "What is that noise, you sound like you're in the shower or something."
"I am." I almost laughed. "It was the only place I could answer the phone since Jess and my friends are here."
"Wow, Kit, always trying to make it weird, huh?" He laughed, the musical ring to it wrapping around me.
"What are you talking about?" I asked, but then realization dawned on me. "Oh my god, if you're picturing me naked right now, I'm-."
"You'll what, Kit?" He countered then laughed heartily. "You want to come over again tonight and we can order some pizza and watch another movie?"
I shook my head, cursing myself for answering the phone. "You have a date tonight," I reminded him. "with my best friend."
"Obviously I meant after that." He sounded like he was smiling.
"Hunter, I'm not doing this." I told him sternly. "Last night was a mistake and it isn't happening again."
"Nothing happened, we were just hanging out." He cut in.
"I know that, but it doesn't matter." I told him. "Jessica is my best friend and she really likes you-"
"I really like her too, but what does that have to do with you?"
"Hunter, she would never forgive me for going behind her back like I did."
"So why can't you tell her the truth?" He asked. "There is nothing wrong with having friends of the opposite sex."
I grabbed my towel and jumped out of the shower, leaving the water running so no one would hear me. "Because I'm sure you just have so many friends that are girls, right?"
"I have tons actually." He replied without missing a beat.
"Oh, and you've never been romantically involved with any of them?" I demanded.
"Yes!" He almost yelled. "I have friends, that are girls, that I have managed to not have sex with!" He said firmly, then he laughed. "And not just because two of them are lesbian," He continued to laugh to himself. "But because I am capable of just having friends."
"Ok, well good for you, but I'm not doing it." I told him. "Jess would never be ok with it, and I'm not going behind her back again." I said quickly. "I won't be Danny." I muttered.
"You're being ridiculous." He sighed.
"Maybe so, but either way, I'm not doing it."
"Fine." He said exhaustedly. "I had a fun night with you, and I hope your life turns out great and wonderful and you enjoy hanging out with Aaron, who by the way is a total prick." He added. "I won't bother you anymore."
I hung up the phone and sat there on the side of the tub, naked, and ashamed with myself, but also wishing that I actually could go back over there tonight because I felt good when I was around him, but it wouldn't be right, and I'm not doing it.
Hunter is Jessica's and that's just the way it is.
