Chapter Six.

My heart crept slowly up into my throat again as I stood behind Hunter while he quickly unlocked his door and held it open for me to pass.

"Woah," A guy's voice called out. "What the hell happened to the two of you? Did you walk here?"

Hunter walked in behind me, laughing as he put his hand on the small of my back and led me into the living room. "Nah, but it sure as hell felt like we did." He told the guy who was sitting in the floor with two other guys around the coffee table playing some kind of game. Hunter smiled down at me. "Kit, this is Josh, my roommate," He said pointing at the first guy with a bit of a beer gut and long brown hair that touched the tops of his shoulders. "and his friends Lucas and Aaron. "

Lucas was lanky, with a buzz cut and pierced lip, while Aaron was thin, but muscular with a head full of perfectly styled black hair. "Hey," He waved at me, his smile warm. "Kit? That's a cool name."

I walked over a little closer to look at what game they were playing. "My name is actually Tayler, but your friend over there can't ever remember that." I smiled and Aaron winked.

"Yeah, I'm sure ole' Quaid does have that problem." He laughed and Hunter rolled his eyes.

"Come on, Kit, let's get you cleaned up."

I followed Hunter into the back bedroom and I was surprised at how big it was. His walls were painted a dark gold and he had a nice reading lamp on his bedside table that made the room look warm and cozy. His bed was made and his closet was impeccably organized for a guy. I felt a little awkward in his bedroom, but he didn't act like anything was weird as he went to his dresser, pulled open the top drawer, and grabbed out a pair of checkered red and gold boxers and tossed them at me, then opened the third drawer and pulled out a long sleeved white t-shirt.

"Give me your wet clothes and I'll toss them in the dryer for you." He said when he handed me the shirt. I swallowed loudly and Hunter's face split around a huge smile. "You should see your face right now." He laughed. "Go change in my bathroom." He pointed to the door on the other side of the room and he shook his head as he went over to the closet and pulled out clothes for himself, not waiting until I was in the bathroom before he started to take off his shirt.

I peeled my eyes away from his sculpted back and ducked into the bathroom, closing the door and flipping on the lights. "Oh my god." I groaned when I looked in the mirror.

"Yeah," Hunter yelled from the other side of the door. "You look a little like a wet rat." He laughed.

"Oh my god." I repeated again, shaking my wet head.

My hair was matted down to my head and my eyeliner was smeared down my face making me look more like a raccoon than a rat, but either way, I looked crazy. My clothes were sticking tighter to my body than I'd realized earlier and I rolled my eyes at myself for walking into a room full of guys looking like this.

I stripped off my pants and shoes, dropping them in a pile at my feet and I peeled my shirt off over my head. I looked at myself in the mirror again in my underwear and thought how strange of a day this has been. I'd met this guy this afternoon, and I'm already standing in his bathroom practically naked.

Hunter knocked twice on the door, making me jump. "Come on, I'm going to throw your stuff in with mine." He called. "What's taking so long?"

I rolled my eyes as I scooped up my clothes from the floor and I opened the door just a crack to pass them out to him, flipping him the bird as I did. He started to flip it back at me, but his eyes drifted behind me and I realized the angle of the mirror in the bathroom made it where he could totally see me standing here in my black bra and panties. I felt my face go red again and my body was covered in chills.

"Oh, uh, sorry." He shook his head at himself, blinking fast, as he took my clothes and backed away from the door.

I closed it back, leaning back against it for a second and shaking my head. "Stupid, stupid, stupid." I chanted at myself, then I turned back to the mirror.

I grabbed the hand towel next to the sink and I was glad it was black. I wet it a little under the faucet, then I scrubbed all of the old makeup off of my face. Once that was done and I looked human again, I used his comb to brush out my hair and I shook it out to make it fall a little nicer before I picked up the clothes he'd given me.

I pulled on the boxers first, laughing at how they fell just below my knees. I rolled them up until I didn't feel like they looked so baggy and until I was sure that the flap in the front wasn't going to pop open. It was showing a little more leg than I'd like, but I didn't have much of a choice. I pulled the white shirt over my head, noticing that he must use a nice fabric softener too because it was amazingly comfortable and it smelled like heaven. It was way too long on me too, so I used the ponytail on my wrist to tie it up so that it wasn't swallowing me whole anymore. I sighed when I noticed you could see my bra through the thin fabric, but I knew I didn't have much of a choice.

I took a deep breath, then walked out of the bathroom.

I looked around his room again now that I was alone. It was perfectly clean, and his book shelf was packed full of thick books new and old. I started to walk over to it to inspect what kind of things he likes to read, but the guy's in the other room all started laughing again and I figured I needed to swallow my pride and go in there instead of hiding in Hunter's room all night.

When I turned around I smiled. On the opposite wall he had a giant framed movie poster of Pearl Harbor. It had always been one of my all-time favorite movies. I ran my fingers across it as I walked out of the room, trying to fill myself up with the confidence Kate Beckinsale had in the movie.

When I walked into the room, everyone turned to look at me, instantly lighting the fire in my face. My cheeks and ears felt hot, but I crossed the room to sit on the couch anyway, instead of grabbing my keys and making a run for it like I wanted.

After I sat down, everyone but Hunter went back to what they were doing. The other guys continued to play the card game, while I could feel Hunter staring at me from the other side of the couch. I counted to ten slowly, then turned to face him. "What?" I asked him.

He smiled and shrugged his shoulders. "You look good when you don't look like a wet rat." He laughed.

"Oh, gee, thanks." I rolled my eyes smiling.

"That's ole' Quaid's way of saying you're hot." Aaron laughed to himself, then slapped down an ace, winning the game and making the other two boys groan. He looked back up at me, and something in the way he was looking at me made me both very uncomfortable and somehow also a little flattered. "Which you are." He winked. "Now how about we play a new game?" He asked, looking at me.

"Oh, what kind of game?" I asked softly.

Josh elbowed Aaron in the side. "How about some strip poker?" He laughed. "She's already half way there."

I narrowed my eyes at him. "Little weird of you to want to see three other guys naked, isn't it?" I fired back and he ducked his eyes.

"Yeah, Josh, that'd be a little strange with one girl." Aaron agreed.

Lucas shrugged as he looked me over. "I don't know," He said. "It wouldn't be if she's really bad at poker."

Hunter sat up from the couch and slapped Lucas in the back of the head. "Shut up." He said firmly.

"Besides," I added. "I'm actually really good at poker, so you all would be sitting around with your dicks in your hands while I'm still fully clothed, but thanks for the offer." I said sarcastically and stood, walking into the kitchen to see how much longer was on my clothes.

I could hear them arguing about something in the other room, but I tried not to listen. After a second Hunter followed me into the kitchen. "I kicked everyone out." He announced to me. "Well, except Josh, but I've banished him to his room for the night."

"You didn't have to do that." I told him, crossing my arms over my chest.

"Yes I did." He nodded. "They were being assholes, and I wasn't going to let that stand." He told me. "Now come one, let's watch a movie."

Liking Hunter was too easy. He was too perfect and sweet and handsome. All of which were things that Jess herself had told me. I thought she'd just been being pointlessly insecure, but now that I've been around him some, I see what she meant. How is it possible that a guy like this one doesn't have a girlfriend?

I shook my head at myself and followed him out of the kitchen, but when he turned down the hall to go into his room I stalled. Hunter turned back to me and smiled knowingly. "All my movies are in here." He explained. "I don't trust my buddies to not destroy them. We can pick out a movie and then watch it in the living room. Stop trying to make it weird, Kit."

I blushed a little, but I shook my head at myself. He was right. I'm the one who keeps making things strange and over thinking it all. He's been nothing but friendly to me. "Ok." I shrugged.

I followed him over to his closet and he pulled down a box from the top shelf and put it on the ground in front of me. I knelt down in the floor and ran my hands over the titles. All the best ones were in here. The Titanic, Gone with the Wind, Pearl Harbor, Saving Private Ryan, The Godfather, Shawshank, all of the Batman movies, Annie Hall, Taxi Driver, all of the Star Wars movies, and just about any book to movie adaptation I could think of.

"Woah." I shook my head, my eyes wide. "How am I supposed to pick out of all of these? This is amazing."

Hunter smiled smugly. "I know." He laughed. "I consider myself a bit of a movie buff."

"I'd say so." I nodded, then I pulled out the obvious choice. "You just can't beat this one." I smirked as I handed him the Pearl Harbor movie case.

"I was kind of hoping you'd pick this one." He laughed as he took the big box of movies and stuffed them back up in the top of his closet.

I sat on the couch while Hunter popped some popcorn in the kitchen. I heard my phone ringing in the other room where I'd left my purse, but I didn't make any moves to go see who it was. At this hour, it was probably just Macy wondering whether or not I was coming home so she could set the alarm. Or even worse, Jessica wanting to ask me about the concert, and I haven't decided on what I'm going to tell her yet.

Hunter walked back into the room right as the movie menu popped up. He went to the DVD player and pressed play before he turned off the lights and put two sodas on the table and the bowl of popcorn on the couch between us.

I tried not to think about the fact that it was so dark. I told myself not to make it weird and I resolved to stay for half of the movie and then head home. It had been a while since I'd seen Pearl Harbor though and I'd forgotten how much I loved it, but also how long of a movie it was.

"You cold?" Hunter asked after the first hour.

I hadn't even noticed that I was holding my arms and my teeth were clattering slightly. I laughed at myself and brought my knees up to hug against my chest. "I guess I am."

Hunter turned on the couch, putting his legs up and facing me while he pulled the thick throw blanket off of the back of the couch. He sprawled himself out on the couch, his feet touching me and he draped the blanket across himself, the excess piled up at his feet.

I shook my head slightly as he grabbed a throw pillow and tucked it under his head, getting comfortable.

"If you're tired, I can go." I told him, already starting to put my legs down.

Hunter sat up on his elbow and I could tell he was giving me a look even though I could only see him in flashes as explosions went off on the TV. "Kit, lay your ass down and watch this movie with me. It's getting to the good part."

I held back my smile and I turned to fluff up the throw pillow beside me, then I inched down onto the couch, pulling the blanket up over me and to my chin while I cuddled myself up and went back to watching the movie.

After a while my legs started to cramp up from how I was holding them up close to me, so I tentatively stretched them out, running them behind Hunter, trying to touch him as little as possible. I finally let myself relax, pretending it was just another regular night in with one of my friends.

I let myself get so relaxed, that before I knew it, I was asleep.
