Chapter 11
The room was eerily quiet; the temperature in the room had dropped drastically since her confession. The Sterlings and agents were once again seated in the living room. Not a word was spoken for what seemed like hours, what Vivienne had announced was still sinking in and she knew better than to open her mouth.
The teenaged girl gripped the hem of her dress in her fists, she tried to stop her body from shaking but the reactions of her brothers was still fresh in her mind making her unable to do so.
She dared to sneak a peek at her younger brother; he had reacted instantly to her confession. Yes, he had lost his stomach in the garden. It was sickening to watch as he vomited and cried knowing it was her that made him do so.
Turning her gaze to her older brother, she saw that he was still in his stone-like state. His facial expression was unreadable, there were no tears in his eyes, although his gaze was unfocused, he was just...there.
They probably hate me.
Averting her gaze Vivienne blinked tears away.
Levi felt light. Like he was floating and barely being held to earth by a string, he wanted to shout and cry and hit something, he didn't know what to do. His older sister just told them that they father was in the ground, how does one reply to that?
While Levi sat weeping and openly showing what he felt Simeon was trying to piece together how his father could end up buried under his baby sister's favorite flowers. He knew there had to be a hell of an explanation, he already knew who did it, it wasn't like the monster they lived with hid her true self while with them but what he wanted to know was how on earth his younger sister knew that their father was there and exactly what happened.
A throat cleared gathering all three of their attentions, "Vivienne" David spoke carefully to the girl, he didn't want to scare her and have her run away now that they had finally discovered where Nicholas Sterling had been. He had pulled out a recorder to get everything Vivienne said on tape, it would later benefit both his team and the broken children sitting in front of him.
"Yes?"
"Do you know what happened to your father? How he ended up...where he is?"
"Yes."
"Will you tell me?"
Vivienne inhaled shakily, she was exhausted all of a sudden, carrying around a dark cloud over her head for two years was tiring. She just wanted to be free along with her brothers.
"It was on their anniversary" she began, Levi and Simeon perked up wanting to hear the details. "I was in the gazebo with dad and we were having a talk, the father daughter dance was coming up at my school and I was really excited. His glass and been empty and he asked me to go get him some more iced tea and I happily did so, I would've done anything for dad.
When I came back out, I heard dad and mother arguing...he was saying that he hoped she enjoyed her anniversary because it would be their last. Dad was planning on divorcing her and taking us away from her, I was so relieved, I thought...finally we're going to get away from this monster but then mother pulled something from behind her back, it was a small gun, she pointed it at dad and said, 'it's years too late for you to grow a spine' then the gun went off. She shot daddy and I just stood there like a block of ice!"
"Vivienne there was nothing you could have done" Reese tried to console the crying young woman, seeing her cry made his heart clench tightly, she was in loads of pain and there wasn't anything he could do but say words.
"I could've warned him, I could've shouted, ran, call the police! Anything! Instead of just...standing there..." she sobbed.
"Why didn't you?" Simeon spoke for the first time in a while.
Reese stared at his friend, more like glared at him for asking his sister such an insensitive thing.
"M-mother said if I told, she would send you where she had sent dad, I didn't want y-you to leave m-me...I'm sorry, I know I was selfish."
Simeon shook his head; he thought he couldn't see his mother as more of a monster than she already was but really? Killing your own husband?
I guess that was easy since she murdered her own child before. How does she even sleep at night?
"She buried him in our backyard; she put lilies over him..." Simeon felt his blood boil.
"No, she didn't" Vivienne interjected.
"What are you saying? That she hired someone to just put him out there? She's not stupid" Simeon scoffed.
"I buried dad."
Ice ran through his veins as his head snapped to Vivienne, piecing everything together he stood from his seat "s-she...she made you bury our father?! In the garden?"
Levi gasped as he looked at his sister, he felt like he was now weightless, he couldn't imagine seeing his father being killed not to mention getting rid of the body. Oh god, what did his sister feel while she was throwing dirt on their father's lifeless body?
"You and Levi were in the game room all that time, she had me do it after you went to sleep. The next few days dad's things were all gone."
Jesus Christ. This woman is a real piece of work. To her own kids? That's messed up. David had seen his fair share of dysfunctional families but this one takes the wrap.
"Vivienne, you did a good job, you were really brave, thank you" Reese said as he stood along with his boss.
Simeon pulled his sister and brother into a big hug squeezing them tightly, "you did nothing wrong Viv, I will always love you, please don't ever think otherwise...you too Levi. I love you guys" Simeon choked.
He turned to his friend nodding to him, silently mouthing a 'thank you'. He would be eternally grateful for what he'd done for him and his siblings, and hopefully one day after all the pain and hurt has gone away, he'd be able to repay him.
