Chapter 19

"Ok, um... favorite book." he says when he's done chewing. "Wait- wait. Let me guess. How to Train Your Dragon?" he asks.

I laugh, wiping my mouth. "How'd you know?"

"Lucky guess."

We sit on the roof of his house, a blanket laid out under us, a box of Margarita pizza sitting open, already missing about 5 pieces. i take a sip of my Dr. Pepper before speaking again. "What's yours?"

"Actually, I  love that series too. I've read it like 26 times."

"Same!" I shout, excited. We laugh at our own dork-y-ness.

"Alright. Alright. Favorite actor or actress?" he asks.

"America Ferrera." I smile. "You?"

"Jay Barruchel."

"Movie?" We both grin already knowing the answer. "How to Train Your Dragon," we say. We crack up again, unable to help ourselves.

"Thanks for giving me an excuse to leave the dance tonight," he says once we've caught our breath.

"No prob. I didn't really care to be there either. Is it because you don't know how to dance?" I ask a tad curious.

"No. I do. It's just that I don't like the feeling of people watching me."

I raise an eyebrow. "You? Of all people." I grin.

He smiles, shaking his head. "I know. Stupid, huh?"

"No, I get it. I can stand on stage and lose myself in the music, but I can't bring myself to make friends in everyday life. i just keep to myself. Never reaching out."

He glances at me, thinking this over. "You know, you can always tell me if something is bothering you."

I nod at him, resting my head on his shoulder. "This definitely beats the Homecoming dance. This is more my style. Take out pizza and D.P." He takes my hand, intertwining our fingers.

I stare out at his backyard. A large pecan tree stands in the back, center, in front of a black iron fence. A small swing set sits on the left side. I used to have one similar to it when I was in elementary school. My best friend, Ruff and i would play on it all the time. My parents would sit on the small patio, sipping iced tea as they watched us. The boys were always more interested in the slide and miniature sandbox.

That was back when I was still friends with Snotlout. Before he developed feelings for me. I still sort of hung out with him in middle and high school, but that was only because Fishlegs and Ruff's twin brother, Tuff, were friends with him.

Gods I missed that house.  Lived there my whole life until now.  I was a little happy to get out of it, to escape all the memories of my parents that existed in it. But, now I feel like I'm farther from them than I've ever been before. At least then, I could touch an object and memories would come flooding back. It's not like that with the new house of course.

"What are you thinking so hard about?" Hiccup asks. I lift my head, meeting his eyes. "You know, you get this crease right there." He says, placing his thumb between my eyebrows. "You only do it when you're concentrating really hard. Like when you were writing your song this week, or your listening to music, and right now."

"Yeah, I hate that."

"Why? I like it. It's you," he says, confused, furrowing his brows.

"Exactly. It's me."

"It's cute." I roll my eyes, nudging his shoulder with my own. "You also play with the little pieces of hair that fall out of your braid when you're nervous." he adds, smiling.

"Well, while we are pointing out flaws... What about you? When you are nervous, you run your hands through your hair and rub the back of your neck. You also move your hands and shoulders when you talk," I say, impersonating him.

He laughs, shaking his head. "I do not."

"You do too!" I argue, chuckling. "Oh, and you puff out your cheeks when you don't know what to say," I add, gesturing to his puffed out cheeks.

He grins. "I don't consider those flaws, though. These are flaws," he says, pointing to a  white scar on his chin and pulling up his pant leg to reveal his prosthetic. "But, these are the things that make us, us."

I smile, knowing he's right. His "flaws" are what I love most about him, what makes him so charming; especially his crooked grin. i rest my head on his shoulder again. "I wish life was always like this. Easy. No worries." I tell him.

"Trust me, I know. But, these little moments wouldn't seem so wonderful if it was always like this. They wouldn't mean as much. It would just be another day."

"I guess you're right."

"You guess I'm right?" he asks, chuckling. I feel his body vibrate as he does so.

"No. I know you're right."
