Chapter 18

(This is Astrid's dress for the dance. She looks just like the picture)

I sit on Punzie's bed waiting for the other girls to finish getting ready. i did everything I needed to at my house before I came. I decided to leave my hair down, adding a few curls. i have on my black dress and black high tops since I don't really feel like blistering my feet from uncomfortable, wobbly, heels. I listen to their constant banter having nothing else to do.

"Do you think this eyeshadow goes or this one?" Anna asks showing two gold powders to her sister.

"Left hand." Elsa says after examining them both closely.

"What do you think ladies?" Anna shows them to everybody before looking at us expectantly.

"They look exactly the same." I say annoyed.

Everyone stares at me then breaking out in laughter. "Left!" they all shout.

I roll my eyes. "Ok. I guess I'm over ruled."

"So Elsa, did Jack get a tux yesterday?" Punzie asks applying mascara to her long lashes.

"Yeah, we had to go to four different places in order to find one that was his size." Elsa groans.

"I'm so excited to see Eret in his tux tonight. He told me he ordered it off of this really expensive online shop." Merida squeals.

After what seems like five hours ( ok, it's only been TWO AND A HALF! ) they were finally ready. I follow them out the door waving buy to Punzie's parents.

"Be careful girls." her mother calls . She stops me before I walk out though. "Astrid are you sure you don't want a ride to the dance if it's to awkward with their whole quadruple date business?" she asks placing a light hand on my shoulder.

"Actually Mrs. Arendelle, I brought my skateboard, but thank you for the offer." I say giving her a light smile. She gives me a curt nod, returning the gesture. I go down the front steps where they are climbing into the white convertible.

"I can't believe Heather is to stuck up to come on our group date with us." Merida huffs.

"I heard he was just meeting her there so he could set up the stage." Punzie tells her.

"I heard that too. Maybe she's mad at him again and just doesn't want to go to the dance alone." Elsa offers. "Are you sure you don't want to join us at dinner?"

"I don't want to intrude." I admit.

"We can't even give you a ride?"

"No. Go have fun." I insist.

"I'm sorry you don't have a date." she says apologetically.

"Eh. I'm a big tough girl. I'll be ok." I reassure them.

🐉

I roll through the gym dodging people in my way. "Scuse me. Coming through. Watch out."

I head towards the stage where a few people are setting up equipment. I turn the corner of the stage ultimately smacking into something. I fly off my board landing on someone. I look down to see Hiccup.

"We really need to stop meeting like this." I say.

He chuckles, "Yeah, at least you get to land top. I always get caught by the ground." I get to my feet helping him up. "What are you doing here so early?" he asks.

"Everyone else went off to dinner."

"You don't have a date either?"

I give him a puzzled expression. "What about Heather? The girls said you were meeting her here or something."

"I told you, I broke up with her. Besides, I never even asked her to the dance. Everyone just assumed. Including her." he answers smiling. My lips turn up slightly at the corners. A timid smile playing out on them.

"Shouldn't we be setting up?" I ask shyly.

He nods. "Yeah." I follow him on to the stage carrying instruments and microphones. "I like the Chuck Taylors with your dress." he compliments setting down Merida's keyboard. He grins at me as I chuckle.

"Thanks." A clanging sounds behind us breaking our small moment.

"Hey, hey, hey. John, be careful with that. You break that and Jack is going to kill you." Hiccup warns running over to help John pick up the drum set. I laugh at Hiccup's worried expression.

"I'm so sorry Hiccup. I didn't mean-"

"John. It's fine. I'll take the blame for you if anything's messed up. Just, go help Astrid with the mics."

John takes a deep breath relaxing himself. " Ok. Thanks Hiccup."

"No problem." Hiccup says patting his shoulder.

"Hiccup, when do you want the voice modifiers?" Calum calls plugging all of his equipment in.

"Coming Calum." he shouts finishing up the drums and running off stage.

"Here. I'll take one." John says taking a guitar from my hand.

"Thanks. Did you ask Jessica to the dance?" i ask trying to make small talk.

"Yeah, but it took me like five tries to even get words out. She finally interrupted my babbling and said yes." he answers blushing.

"Where is she?"

"Oh, she's meeting me here. She had to drop her little brother off at a party first." I nod in understanding. "I- I like your dress Astrid." he says after a moment of silence.

"Oh. You look nice too John."

"You don't have to say that. My tux is kinda baggy. i guess that's what I get for waiting to long to go rent one." he laughs nervously. We finish setting up the rest of the stage, more people showing up as the time goes by.

"Hey John." Hiccup says coming back on stage. "I think Jessica is looking for you." he raps an arm around Johns shoulders extending the other, pointing out a dark haired girl in a green dress.

Jessica swivels her neck back and forth searching for her date. John sucks in a deep breath preparing to set off.

Wai- wai- wait." Hiccup says pulling him back. He turns John to face him. Hiccup restitutes John's bow tie and smooths out his collar. "There. Now go." he says shoving John towards the stairs.

John nods and descends, making his way to his date. I'm happy for him, but it also makes me upset that even shy John could get a date and I couldn't.

"That was really nice of you." I tell Hiccup watching John. He shrugs. "Do your friends ever see that side of you?" I ask still keeping my eyes on John as he awkwardly chats with Jessica.

"People don't really care for the gentle, kind-hearted rocker guys. They want crazy, bad boy, trouble makers."

"So it's an act that you put on?" I press wanting to know his motives. He shrugs again. This time I look at him. "Like I told you before, I think you're cool, but not how you perceive it. I like how you treat John, boosting his confidence."

"But that's not what sells." Hiccup smiles at me sadly.

"You never know." I say walking past him and plugging in the last mic.

"Can you tell me what your new song is about now?" he asks following me .

I look up from where I'm bent down. I finally notice he's not wearing a tux. He has on a black blazer, a whit t-shirt underneath, light denim jeans, and black Chuck Taylors.

"No. And how come you're not wearing a tux?"

"I don't have a date, so I didn't think it mattered. The only reason I'm hear is to play with the band." I laugh at his reasoning. "Besides, it's not really my thing." he teases. I chuckle remembering Jack's text yesterday. "Come on, lets get off of the stage until it's time to perform." he says grabbing my hand and leading me down the short stairway.

"I don't know what I'm going to do when Heather gets here. She's going to be pissed." he tells me.

"Oh, don't worry. She's about to be pissed at me instead." I smirk. He furrows his brow confused. I snicker. "You'll see." I glance down quickly at our intertwined hands as we walk. I shift my eyes when I feel my cheeks burning.

"It's strange not seeing your hair in a braid too." he adds after a second.

"It's a dance. I thought I would dress up some." I tease nudging him.

"Can you at least tell me what the song is called?"

"Why are you so persistent about my song?" I ask.

"Curious, I guess." I roll my eyes at his goofy, lopsided grin.

"Astrid!" I hear Punzie's voice, so I pull my hand out of Hiccup's so they wont see.

"How was dinner?" I ask. I catch Hiccup staring at our hands.

"I'm sorry I-" I whisper to him but am cut off.

"It was amazing. You should have gone." she chirps happily.

"I'm glad you enjoyed it." I say smiling.

Jack jogs up, jumping on Hiccup. "Ready to rock?" he yells as they mess around.

"Who was it that agreed to let five-year-olds in the band?" Merida complains watching them.

"That was you." Punzie says innocently playing with Merida's curls. I shake my head following them to the stage. We stand off to the side warming up.

"Jack, you messed up your tie roughhousing." Elsa complains fixing it. She reaches up smoothing out his hair. As soon as she turns around, he messes his hair up again.

I sit on the stage steps gripping my stomach. I don't get nervous, but I'm worried about how Hiccup and more importantly, Heather are going to react to my song.

"You're going to do amazing. I know it. You always do." Eret soothes Merida. I watch them kiss, for some reason not being able to look away.

"Alright Blondie, get the show on the road so we can dance." I hear Flynn joke to Punzie as she readjusts Anna's braids.

"What's wrong?" Hiccup asks sitting down beside me ignoring Merida and Eret in front of us.

"Nerves."

"The great Astrid Hofferson is nervous?" he teases. I had said something of the sort to him last week when he was anxious before a show. I smile nudging him with my shoulder.

"Hey, man. Where's Heather? She's not going to wish you good luck with a smooch?" Jack teases sitting down on the other side of Hiccup.

"I don't know. I haven't seen her." he responds casually.

"Oh, how was Wendy's last night?" Jack asks changing the subject.

"Tasty." I say.

"Oh, I see."

"Cool it Jack. Her uncle took us to dinner to take a break from homework." Hiccup adds before Jack can get to thinking too much about it.

"Sure, sure I believe it." he says smirking.

"Guys. Show time." Calum says popping up from behind all of his sound equipment.

We scramble up, climbing on to the stage. I take my spot on Hiccup's right, Punzie on his left, Merida and Jack behind us at their instruments.

"Good evening everybody. Are you ready to get this party started?" Hiccup calls out into the microphone. The crowd cheers in excitement at the sight of him. he laughs enjoying their reaction. "I hope we are worthy enough to be playing at your Homecoming. So, here we go!"

( 7 minutes in Heaven)

I'm sleeping my way out of this one

With anyone who will lie down

I'll be stuck fixated on one star

When the world is crashing down

I keep telling myself

I keep telling myself

I'm not the desperate type

But you've got me looking in through blinds

I keep telling myself

I keep telling myself

I'm not the desperate type

Sitting out dances on the wall

Trying to forget everything that isn't you

I'm not going home alone

'Cause I don't do too well

Sitting out dances on the wall

Trying to forget everything that isn't you

I'm not going home alone

'Cause I don't do too well on my own

The only thing worse than not knowing

Is you thinking that I don't know

I'm having another episode

I just need a stronger dose

I keep telling myself

I keep telling myself

I'm not the desperate type

But you've got me looking in through blinds

I keep telling myself

I keep telling myself

I'm not the desperate type

Sitting out dances on the wall

Trying to forget everything that isn't you

I'm not going home alone

'Cause I don't do too well

Sitting out dances on the wall

Trying to forget everything that isn't you

I'm not going home alone

'Cause I don't do too well on my own

Da, da, da

Do, do, do

Da, da, da

Do, do, do

I keep telling myself

I keep telling myself

You're not the desperate type

But you've got me looking in through blinds

I keep telling myself

I keep telling myself

I'm not the desperate type

Sitting out dances on the wall

Trying to forget everything that isn't you

I'm not going home alone

'Cause I don't do too well on my own

"Alright, we have our fellow guitarist, Astrid, who is going to perform a song she wrote. Give it up for her!" Hiccup says clapping for me as we switch places.

I can feel my hands beginning to sweat as they grip the mic and my guitar neck. 'You can do this Astrid. Who cares what they will think. You've worked hard on this song.' I pep talk myself.

I scan the crowd finding Heather in the center of the left side. Her arms are crossed over her breasts, her hair in a loose waterfall braid, and she's wearing a long silver dress that compliments her curves. I can tell she's glaring at me, even from this distance. I take a deep breath and begin.

"Hey everyone. I just wrote this song a few days ago, so I hope you like it." I glance over at Hiccup for reassurance. He nods at me, then tells Jack to begin.

(Girlfriend)

Hey, hey

You, you

I don't like your girlfriend

No way, no way

I think you need a new one

Hey, hey

You, you

I could be your girlfriend

Hey, hey

You, you

I know that you like me

No way, no way

No, it's not a secret

Hey, hey

You, you

I want to be your girlfriend

You're so fine

I want you mine

You're so delicious

I think about you all the time

You're so addictive

Don't you know what I can do

To make you feel all right?

Don't pretend

I think you know

I'm so precious

And,  yeah

I'm the pretty pretty princess

I can tell you like me too

And you know I'm right

She's like so, whatever

You could do so much better

I think we should get together now

(And that's what everyone's talkin' about)

Hey, hey

You, you

I don't like your girlfriend

No way, no way

I think you need a new one

Hey, hey

Hey, hey

You, you

I know that you like me

No way, no way

No, it's not a secret

Hey, hey

You, you

I want to be your girlfriend

I can see the way

I see the way you look at me

And even when you look away

I know you think of me

I know you talk about me all the time

Again and again

So come over here

And tell me what I wanna hear

Better yet, make your girlfriend disappear

I don't wanna hear you say her name ever again (and again and again)

Cause she's like so, whatever

You could do so much better

I think we should get together now

(And that's what everyone's talkin' about)

Hey, hey

You, you

I don't like your girlfriend

I could be your girlfriend

Hey, hey

You, you

I know that you like me

No way, no way

No, it's not a secret

Hey, hey

You, you

I want to be your girlfriend

In a second you'll be wrapped around my finger

Cause I can, 'cause I can do it better

There's no other, so when's it gonna sink in?

She's so stupid

What were you thinkin'? (x2)

Hey, hey

You, you

I don't like your girlfriend

No way, no way

I think you need a new one

Hey, hey

You, you

I could be your girlfriend

No way, no way

Hey, hey

You, you

I know that you like me

No way, no way

No way, no way

Hey, hey

You, you

I want to be your girlfriend

No way, no way

Hey, hey!

I take a deep breath when I'm finished out of air from jumping around. I see Hiccup's lopsided grin as he shakes his head when we switch places again. I look to where Heather was standing. She mouths the words, "You're so dead". I shrug it off smiling, knowing the two people I wrote the song about understood where I was coming from.

(A Little Less Sixteen Candles/ A Little More Touch Me)

I confess, I'm messed up

Droppin' I'm sorry like you're still around

And I know you're dressed up

Hey kid you'll never live this down

You're just the girl all the boys want to dance with

And I'm just the boy who's had too many chances

I'm sleeping on your folk's porch again, dreaming

She said, she said, she said, "Why don't you just drop dead?"

I don't blame you for being you

But you can't blame me for hating it

So say, what are you waiting for? Kiss her, kiss her

I set my clocks early 'cause I know I'm always late

Write me off, give up on me

Cause darling, what did you expect?

I'm just off a lost cause

A long shot, don't even take this bet

You can make all the moves, you can aim all the spotlights

Get all the sighs and the moans just right

I'm sleeping on your folk's porch again, dreaming

She said, she said, she said, "Why don't you just drop dead?"

I don't blame you for being you

But you can't blame me for hating it

So say, what are you waiting for? Kiss her, kiss her

I set my clocks early 'cause I know I'm always late

Always on

(Always on)

You said you'd keep me honest

Always on

(Always on)

But I won't call you on it

Always on

(Always on)

I don't blame you for being you

But you can't blame me for hating it

So say, what are you waiting for? Kiss her, kiss her

I set my clocks early 'cause I know I'm always late

I set my clocks early 'cause I know I'm always late

"Ok. So I stayed up all night writing this song, so if it's bad please forgive me." Hiccup says before beginning our last song.

He brought the music to practice today. Everyone was worried about it since we had practiced the others like crazy, but then he was adding additional songs.

(Tiffany Blews)

I'm not a crybaby, I'm the crybaby

A caterpillar that got stuck

Mr. Moth come quick with any luck

A long walk to a dark house

A Roman candle can't keep us far apart

I got your body doing alright

Hate me baby maybe I'm a piece of art

My friends all lie and say

They only want the best wishes for me

Oh, 3 2 1, we go live

Oh baby, you're a classic like a little black dress

You're a faded moon stuck on a little hot mess

And oh baby, you're a classic like a little black dress

But you'll be faded soon stuck on a little hot mess

I can make your heart slow

I can feel the weather in my bones

We're starting off, I can turn it to what I like

Your pupils big roll like dice

They say they only want the best wishes for me

They only want the best for me

Oh, 3 2 1, we go live

Oh baby, you're a classic like a little black dress

You're a faded moon stuck on a little hot mess

And oh baby, you're a classic like a little black dress

But you'll be faded soon stuck on a little hot mess

I'm not the boy I was before

What I am is just venting, venting

Dear gravity, you've held me down in this starless city

I'm not the boy I was before

What I am is just venting, venting

Dear gravity, you've held me down in this starless city

They say they only want the best wishes for me

They only want the best for me

Oh, 3 2 1, we go live

Oh baby, you're a classic like a little black dress

You're a faded moon stuck on a little hot mess

And oh baby, you're a classic like a little black dress

But you'll be faded soon stuck on a little hot mess

I smile widely when the song is over knowing where he got "you're a classic like a little black dress" knowing I would be wearing a black dress to the dance tonight.

"We are the Big 5!" we shout running off stage, the crowd cheering.

"Good job guys!" Jack yells jumping up and down, congratulating everyone.

He grabs Elsa's hand when he gets to the end of the stairs and leads her to the dance floor. I stand with Hiccup, waiting for everyone to head off to go dance.

"So, someone got a little jealous when Heather showed up Monday." Hiccup says standing over me as I lean against the wall, his hands on either side of my head.

"You're a classic like a little black dress, you're a faded moon stuck on a little hot mess?" I question raising an eyebrow. "And that wasn't about us?"

"Maybe." He says giving me a crooked smirk.

"I told you Heather was going to be more upset with me than you after this." i tell him, my eyes locked with his green orbs.

"Well, I guess this wont help either of our cases then, will it?" he asks.

I look back at him confused."What do you-?"

He cuts me off touching his lips gently to mine. It starts out as a sweet kiss but evolves into greed. He presses his body into mine, sandwiching me between him and the wall. I would say I'm trapped, but I don't really care to move. My hands travel down his torso as he grips my hips firmly against his own.

He brings a surprising gentleness as he does this; my hands resting on his stomach. I can feel the small, lean muscles through his t-shirt as they contract and release.

"Lets get out of here." he says suddenly. " He shakes his head repeating his words. "Lets get out of here."

I laugh nodding my head. I pick up my board from behind Calum's setup and run out of the gym with Hiccup, my hand in his.
