Chapter One
Rose had tears in her eyes as she heard Bernard telling her sister he was no more interested in their seven years of marriage. Even behind the curtains, Rose could feel Lisa's broken soul and heart reaching out to Bernard. Lisa wanted him to tell her what the problem was. She needed him to look into her eyes and say it one more time and he did exactly that before she could tell him to do so.
“You know how much I have wanted this. I have prayed for this to happen. When she told me she could make this happen, I decided to go with her. I had hope in us but things weren't going as we both wanted. When you told me, it would take more than months and probably a year, I believed in you and hoped I could be successful as I have always dreamt. I wanted to prove to my parents that I could do something on my own. They never believed in me when I told them I wanted to be something else. They only believed in my other brothers because they wanted to be a lawyer and an engineer. And this is my chance to make it. She has promised to give me everything. She has her own company now; you should see it, it's so huge," he calmly explained.
“So you left me because you wanted to be rich?” And for once, Lisa had understood why his own parents didn't want him anymore.
“You can say that if it would help you understand faster. Listen, Lisa, you are a very nice person; both from the inside and outside. Every guy would love to be with you. You can’t hold on to something or somebody that doesn’t want you anymore. I will have to travel around the world once I get married. You can’t wait for me. And I might probably not come back for you. To start with, I’m even not from this country and so are my dreams," he said and Lisa couldn't take it anymore.
She knew he wasn't from this country. She knew he was disowned by his parents. But she was willing to grow old with him.
“So you didn’t love me, not even once. But you told me you loved me. I believed you. You told me you gave up everything to marry me. You made me build my hopes so high. How could you?” she enquired, remembering all the times he had said them without a trait of deceit.
“You seem not to get me. I love you. I still do and deep down you know it. I can’t ask you to wait because I won’t come back. I love my country and you also love yours," he told.
“This is not a reason for you to decide on a divorce alone,” Lisa said, forgetting all about the other woman.
“I have decided and nothing is changing my mind. Yes, I promised you came first in my life, but this comes first. Understand me, I beg you," he pleaded.
“No, Bernard. Therefore, you are choosing money over our love. Are you this heartless? Don’t you care about my feelings?” Lisa's tears were blinding her from seeing the man she couldn't recognize anymore.
“You knew this was going to happen right? Your grandmother was the witch…” Lisa stopped him before he could continue.
For once, she regretted telling him about her family. She was glad he didn't know Rose was the successor.
“She was not a witch...She happened to practice magic because my family practiced it,” well and still does anyway.
“I’m sorry, Lisa. But I have to do this; because I don’t want to live with regrets,” he seemed not to listen to reasons. His mind had already been made up.
"Who is she? Is she more beautiful than I am?"
"Oh come on! You know no one can be compared to your beauty; not even your sister. But beauty isn't everything. And beside she's much more older than I am."
He turned to leave when Rose called the rain. It started to rain heavily and his flight was two hours later. She wasn’t calling unto the rain so she could stop him from leaving as he was thinking. She called it so she could curse him.
"You inherited your grandmother's powers? She didn't die with them?" He sounded shocked.
“Bernard Hasid, for choosing wealth over love, I curse you and your entire generation. Never will they find love if they choose wealth and never will you also progress if you choose to love. You and your generation would never have both. You will never be happy if you go ahead to marry her,” Rose cursed.
After cursing him, the tender stroke three times to finalize her words. He didn’t seem to regret his decision even after the curse.
“You got to be kidding me, Rose. I hate you for this. How dare you? How could you?” he turned to Lisa and again asked, "Did you two plan this?"
Lisa didn’t answer him but sat closer to the furnace and with a final glance at Rose, he left. Lisa thought she would be happy as her parents were.
Bernard thought about Rose and the curse. When he arrived, he made up his mind to keep it a secret. After all, he didn't love the woman he was going to marry.
