nineteen

He absolutely wasn't sorry. Then a police officer approached the group. All of us went quiet. Clay stepped forward. "What's happening?" he asked. The officer looked between us. "It's over," he finally said when he realized that we weren't here for fun. I looked at Chibs, then back at the building, and for a moment nobody moved. Jax. Tara. Salazar. I swallowed. "What does that mean?" I asked, stepping closer to where Clay and the officer were standing. "Salazar is dead. The situation has been contained," he continued. I saw Clay's shoulders relax slightly. "What about Jax?" Clay asked. "He's alive as far as I know," the Officer replied. I closed my eyes. Oh, thank God, I thought. "And Tara?" I asked immediately. The officer nodded. "She's alive, too. Both of them are being taken to the hospital for medical evaluations," he told me, and I felt my knees give out slightly, and before I could fall to the ground, I felt two strong arms around me supporting me until I was standing on my feet. "Oh, thank God," I whispered. Chibs pulled me into his arms, holding me close, and I quickly wrapped my arms around him. "Aye, lass," he whispered into my ear. I buried my face against his chest for a second. Then I pulled back. "Hospital," I said, releasing my arms. "What?" he asked, and I tapped his arm. "We're going to the hospital," I told him. Clay sighed. "Riley-" he tried to say, but I interupted him. "Nope," I said immediately. I was already reaching for my bag, which was on the hood of the car closest to us. Ignoring everybody around me, I turned to Chibs. "Tara is pregnant; she was kidnapped, and she needs to be checked out. We are going to the hospital." I said. Bobby, who was next to Clay, nodded. "Can't argue with that," he grumbled. Juice grabbed his keys. "Come on, then." Chibs looked down at me. "Ye good?" he asked, and I nodded. I gave him a look. "Filip," I grumbled. "Aye, alright," Chibs replied, knowing what it meant when I used his real name. He smiled faintly. "Just askin'," he added with a shrug. I grabbed his hand. "Let's go," pulling him to the car. For the first time all afternoon, I was walking toward something that might actually make everything better. The drive to the hospital was quiet. Chibs was driving while I just looked out of the window, and when we arrived, we walked inside, but there was nobody around, and after I asked at the front desk, we were asked to wait. Hospitals had never felt so quiet. Not really quiet, of course. There were nurses moving through corridors, phones ringing, and the occasional announcement over the speakers. But compared to the police perimeter, the shouting, and the endless waiting, it felt almost peaceful. We gathered in the waiting area while Jax and Tara were taken through for their examinations. I sat between Chibs and Juice, bouncing my knee so fast that Chibs eventually rested his hand on it. "Easy, lass," he mumbled. I looked at him. "I am being easy," I grumbled, slightly annoyed. He looked pointedly at my leg. I stopped. For two seconds. Then started again. Chibs sighed. "You're doin' it again," he mumbled. "I can't help it!" I grumbled. "Remind me never to get on her bad side," Bobby grumbled from where he was standing at the door of the waiting area.  "Too late," Happy muttered. I pointed at him. "I heard that," I said with narrow eyes. "Good," he simply replied. Chibs chuckled under his breath. I looked at him. "You're supposed to be on my side," I told him with a slight slap on his shoulder.  "I am on yer side," he replied, rubbing his shoulder. "Then stop laughing." I let out a huff. "Can't help it, lass," he slightly shrugged. I tried to glare at him. It was difficult when he was looking at me like that. Eventually, I leaned against his shoulder. The smile disappeared from my face. "What if something's wrong with the baby?" I asked. Chibs's expression changed immediately. He turned toward me. "Riley..." he quietly said. "I know they're checking Tara, but what if—" I couldn't finish. Tara had been through enough already. The thought that she might lose something else after everything she'd endured made my chest ache. Chibs wrapped his arm around me. "We'll wait for the doctors to tell us." he said and I nodded, swallowing hard. Juice's expression softened across from us. "Tara's tough." Juice said, leaning over with his head slightly resting on my shoulder. "I know." I replied, not moving my head. "Jax won't leave her," he added, and I nodded. "I know that, too." I answered with a light huff. I stared at the corridor. "I just need to know they're both okay." I added. Nobody argued with that. For once, even the boys had nothing smart to say. Time passed. A nurse came through and spoke briefly with the receptionist. A doctor disappeared into another corridor. Somebody's phone rang. Every time the doors opened, all of us looked up. Then, finally, Jax appeared. He looked exhausted. His hair was a mess, his shoulders tense, and he had the expression of a man who'd been through far too much in a single day. But he was standing. He was walking. And he was alive. I shot to my feet. "Jax!" I yelled. I saw Jax raise his head when he heard my scream. As fast as I could, I crossed the waiting room and just stopped in front of him. Jax smiled and opened his arms for a hug, and I carefully hugged him back as tight as I could. "Hey, Riley," he said with a smile. I pulled back enough to inspect his face. "Are you hurt?" I asked, and he slightly shook his head. "I'm alright," he replied. "Don't lie to me." I grumbled, feeling he was bullshitting me.
