Jax put both his hands on my shoulder. "I'm not," he told me. I checked him anyway. His face. His arms. His shoulders. He gave me a tired smile. "You done?" he asked, amused. "No," I replied. I looked toward the corridor behind him. "Where's Tara?" I asked. "She's resting. The doctors are checking on the baby." Jax replied. My heart climbed straight into my throat. "And?" I asked, hoping for good news. Jax shook his head. "We're waiting," he told me and the group who I could feel behind me. I nodded slowly. "Right," I said with a nod. He looked at me. "She's scared," he told me, and I understood. My expression softened. "Of course she is," I mumbled. "I told her everything was going to be alright," Jax told me. I reached for his arm, giving him a squeeze. "Then stay beside her and keep telling her that," I told him. Jax gave me a nod, but before he turned to head back to the corridor, I pulled him close, hugging him one more time. "I'm glad you're unharmed," I told him quietly, and I felt his arms around me. "Me too," he replied, releasing me. Then he returned to Tara's room. I watched him disappear down the corridor. Chibs came up behind me and slipped his arms around my waist. "He's a good man," he quietly told me. I leaned back against him. "Yeah," I replied. My voice trembled slightly. "And she's a good woman," I added. "Aye," Chibs mumbled. I looked up at him. "They deserve some good news," I said. He kissed my temple. "They do," he said with a slight smile. We'd barely settled back into our seats when the doctor finally came through the doors. Jax was beside him. Tara wasn't with them, which made my stomach tighten all over again. The doctor looked toward our group. "Family?" he asked. Every single one of us stood. The doctor paused, seemingly reconsidering his question. Jax gave a tired little smile. "They're family," he said. The doctor nodded. "Alright," he finally said. I stepped forward before anybody else could ask. "How's Tara?" I asked. "She's being monitored, but she's stable. We're going home soon." Jax replied. I exhaled. "And the baby?" I asked. Jax's entire expression changed at the question. The doctor smiled. "We've checked the pregnancy. At this stage, we haven't found any immediate signs of a problem with the baby. Tara will need rest and follow-up care, but that's encouraging news," the doctor said, and while he spoke, I turned to look at him. For one beautiful second, I couldn't speak. Then— "Oh, thank God." I whispered, putting a hand on my stomach. Juice let out a breath so dramatic that Bobby actually patted his shoulder. Chibs closed his eyes briefly. Clay's expression finally eased. Even Happy looked a little less murderous. I turned toward Jax. His eyes were bright with relief. "Jax..." I quietly said. He nodded, swallowing hard. "The baby's alright," he said, knowing what I wanted to say. I hugged him again. This time, he laughed quietly against my shoulder. "You're gonna break my ribs, Riley," he mumbled. "Good. You scared ten years off my life." I replied. "Sorry," he said with a quiet laugh. "You should be," I grumbled. He smiled. I pulled back and held his face between my hands for a moment. "Now you listen to that doctor. You stay with your wife, you let her rest, and you don't do anything stupid." I told him. Jax raised an eyebrow. "You sound like my mother," he said. "And also doing anything stupid?" he added. "Don't test me," I said with a slight laugh. Chibs chuckled. "Best do as she says, lad." I pulled my hands from his face. Jax shook his head.  "Right. Got it." Jax replied, and I hugged him one more time. "Can I see her?" I asked him, and Jax smiled. "She's asking for you, actually," he told me. My expression softened instantly. "She is?" I asked, and Jax nodded. I looked at Chibs. He smiled and released my hand. "Go on, lass," he said with a smile. I squeezed his fingers. "I won't be long." I told him. "Aye. Take yer time," he replied with a smile. I followed Jax down the corridor, my heart finally beginning to settle. When we reached Tara's room, I stopped at the doorway. She was propped up in bed, looking tired and pale, but very much herself. The second she saw me, her eyes filled. "Riley," he said with a light smile. "Oh, sweetheart." I told him, relieved. I crossed the room and carefully wrapped my arms around her. She hugged me tightly. For a few moments, neither of us spoke. There was nothing I could say that would make the day disappear. Nothing that would erase what she'd been through. So I simply stayed beside her. Eventually, I pulled back and brushed a strand of hair away from her face. "How are you feeling?" I asked softly. "Like I've had the worst day of my life," she replied. I gave her a watery smile. "Yeah. That's fair." I replied with a quiet laugh. She glanced toward Jax. "The baby?" she asked, and I felt her worried look. I took her hand. "The doctor said they haven't found any immediate problems. That's encouraging." I told her, and I could feel her shoulder sag with relief. "Okay," she quiet. She closed her eyes briefly. "Okay," she said again. I squeezed her hand. "You don't have to be brave right now, Tara," I told her. Her eyes opened again. For a moment, she looked as though she might cry. Then she leaned forward and hugged me once more. And I held her. Because Salazar was dead. Jax was alive. Tara was alive. And for tonight, at least, the news we'd all been praying for was good. Outside the room, the boys were waiting. I just smiled, and they understood.
