Chapter 54
Drew didn't say a word about what I had told him and exited the car with a quick nod, and I followed suit, exiting from the other side and rolling my eyes.
I didn't say a word and opened the door to the back so that I could grab the bags that I packed for the weekend while Drew did the same but on the other side of the car.
"So what are the sleeping arrangements, Sweetcheeks?" he asked and grabbed his back while he looked at me and raised an eyebrow in question. "How many beds and baths are in this apartment?"
"It's three beds and two baths," I replied with a shake of my head, biting back a tired sigh. "Grams has her own room and then Clarissa and I are going to share the master. You can have the guest bedroom and sleep there."
Drew looked at me and raised an eyebrow in question while he studied me. Amusement flashed through his eyes, and a small smirk appeared on his face while he studied me. "You are going to share a room with Clarissa?" he asked and cocked his head to the side while he studied me.
"I have the biggest bedroom and have room for an air mattress. The other two bedrooms have other beds attached, but that is besides the point." I closed the back door of the Jeep and started to walk to the back with Drew doing the same thing.
"Then why don't we do it?" Drew asked and moved to my side. He cocked his head closer to the side, biting back a small smile while he studied me. "Why don't we share a room and not you and her?"
"N-"
"I will sleep on the air mattress," he said, interrupting me with a shake of his head, "unless you want me in your bed." He flashed me a small smirk and a wink, and I rolled my eyes and scowled without saying a word.
He chuckled and tucked his head closer to his chest, and a small smile appeared on his face. "I know that you are working on stuff and do not want her to know. Correct?" He raised an eyebrow in question and studied me further.
I bit back a tired sigh and nodded, biting back a small frown. "Correct," I replied coldly. "However, I do not know how Grams will take it for you to sleep in the same room as me."
"Well, who pays all the bills and everything with the apartment room?" he asked and raised an eyebrow in question while he studied me.
"Me," I replied with a shake of my head. "Everything is, well will be, under my name as soon as I turn eighteen. I have been the one paying bills for it and such for a couple of years."
"And your grandmother is just a cover up?" he asked, and I nodded in confirmation, biting back a small frown. "This goes for the employees of your company too, right?"
I bit back a tired sigh and shook my head. "They work directly for me," I said and cleared my throat while I licked my lips, growing hesitant. "Some of them have worked for me for years."
"Even though you are still in high school."
I bit back a small chuckle and nodded in confirmation. "Yes," I said. "They work for me, even though I am still in high school." I shifted my bag on my back and cleared my throat, licking my lips while I looked around before I looked at him. "I've started the company at such a young age," I said. "Grams was the face for years and has basically been that face, even though I go to the places when I can."
Drew furrowed his brows and nodded, biting back a small frown. "Do you have a different phone that you use for that?" he asked and raised the eyebrow higher in question while he studied me, and I nodded in confirmation. "Will I ever get that number?"
"No," I said and shook my head. "You do not need that phone number because my actual phone is usually with me even when I am on business for that stuff."
Drew set his jaw and pressed his lips into a thin line, and I could tell that he did not like I would give it to him.
I scoffed a laugh and rolled my eyes, pursing my lips in annoyance. "Eevie and Ethan do not even have that number, Drew," I said coldly. "As I have stated, it is only for business purposes and nothing else."
"But they have a phone number for the Caprien company," he said. "Why don't I?"
"Because you haven't looked it up," I said and rolled my eyes, scowling. "It's not the direct line to my work phone, but it will send me a call if an assistant can't answer the phone. I mainly do business through email anyway." I shrugged and grimaced, pressing my lips into a thin line.
"Why?"
"CYA," I replied coldly and shrugged. "Cover Your Ass. I don't want to get sued or be brought to court and there is a lot of stuff that I don't want to deal with. I make sure to have documents, timesheets, anything like that to make sure that my ass is covered. I have too many people counting on me for me not to fail."
Drew furrowed his brows and slowly nodded. He didn't say a word when we reached the building, and I could tell that he understood that I didn't want to have this conversation with him out loud when I shifted away from him.
I bit back a tired sigh and moved a hand through my hair and across my face before I grabbed my wallet and pulled out a keycard for the front door. "We are going to have to get you and Clarissa one of these," I said and placed it on the scanner.
The scanner buzzed and turned green, indicating that the door was unlocked, and Drew opened it as soon as he could.
"Why?" he asked and gestured for me to go through the door. "Is this the only way to get in?"
I nodded and walked into the building before I turned left, deciding that I should get them the stuff now because I had no idea how long we would actually be staying here and not going home when the weekend was over. "That and the front office area," I replied, and Drew followed me. "It's easier to get to my apartment from this door than it is to go the long way around the building."
"Where are we going, then?" he asked and looked at me from the corner of his eye. "I take it that means your apartment is going the other way than this?"
"Yes," I nodded in confirmation and stuffed the cards back into my wallet before I slipped my wallet into my pants pocket. "I am going to go up front and get the cards and keys for you and Clarissa now. I do not know how long we are actually going to be staying here."
"What do you mean?" Drew asked and raised an eyebrow in question while he studied me. "I thought you said it would only be for the weekend."
"Weinstien will let me know when it is safe for me to go back to the house. It's in my parents' name, so they do have the right to it more than I."
"If they sell it, are you going to buy it?" he asked, and I hesitated before I nodded in confirmation, pressing my lips into a thin line. "Why?"
"Well, I want to make sure that everyone who lives there still has a place over their head, and I don't want them to lose their jobs. As much as my parents suck, they do treat the employees at the house with "respect" and give them somewhat of a livable wage because they want them to take care of me and all that good stuff." I rolled my eyes and scowled.
"Do the others that don't live there even work?" Drew asked, and I nodded in confirmation. "Why?"
"It's part of an agreement that we have with each other. They can work for us and be on call but have a main job that they can focus their time on or hobbies." I shrugged and grimaced, pressing my lips into a thin line. "Sometimes they have different hobbies that they do and are good at, so they do that instead unless it's all hands on deck because my parents are there." I rolled my eyes and scowled.
"You care about them, don't you?" he asked and raised an eyebrow in question, and I bit back a small smirk and nodded. "Why?"
"Because they are my family," I said and shook my head, biting back a tired sigh. "They might not be my family by blood, but they are still my family. I'll make sure that they stay safe and well because if it wasn't for them, then I wouldn't be here."
"And that doesn't include your actual grandmother, right?" he asked. "And what do you mean by you wouldn't be here? Where would you go?"
I bit back a small smile and shook my head, not saying a word. I picked up my pace and bit the inside of my lips, silently praying that he understood and dropped the subject.
Please, because I didn't want him to know all the secrets that I held, and that was one of them because I didn't want him to be worried about me at all...
