Chapter 1
"Hey, Silver! Think fast!" Sonic shouted as he dashed forwards. He made a sharp turn around me, clipping my side on the return, causing me to spin out of control and fall to the ground. Sonic skid to a stop, laughing.
"Whoops! Sorry, dude! You alright?" He asked, jogging back over to help me up. I shrugged him off.
"I'm fine." I replied, brushing myself off. Sonic put his hands on his hips.
"You seemed pretty lost in thought there, pal. Isn't how Shadow turned out reason enough to keep your head out of the past?" Sonic pointed out. I shrugged and crossed my arms.
"It just feels like I'm forgetting something. Like something's missing, but I can't figure out what! Do you know what I mean?" I admitted. Sonic laughed shortly.
"No, I don't know, because I'm not weird and I don't ponder things for hours on end. I have a life!" He teased, one eye narrowed. "Next time I say 'think fast,' you might wanna, I don't know, react? Just a suggestion. I'll see you around, Silver!" I said nothing as Sonic ran off. I pursed my lips, ignoring his words. There was something there...I was sure of it.
"He's an idiot." I spun around and saw Shadow, his arms crossed, glaring after Sonic.
"Oh! Shadow! You scared me! Whatdya mean?" I asked, a hand to my chest to calm my heart. Shadow looked at me with cold eyes.
"Sonic's an idiot. Something did happen...you remember, don't you?" It wasn't really a question, but more of an accusation. Anger sparked in my chest.
"No, I don't remember, Shadow! That's kind of the issue!" I snapped. Shadow narrowed his eyes at me, hatred in his gaze.
"Then maybe you shouldn't remember." He growled under his breath. I clenched my fist and a rock beside us exploded, spraying us with the shrapnel. Neither of us flinched as we glared each other down. Then Shadow smirked and leaned forward.
"Last time we faced off like this, you got kicked in the head." He sneered. My anger at him was temporarily replaced by confusion. I furrowed my eyebrows at the faint memory...Iblis Trigger? What's an Iblis? For some reason, the name caused anger to stir, fear to rise, and grief to devour my soul. I took a step away from Shadow.
"You...you remember?" I whispered. Shadow just looked at me.
"No." He replied, and my heart sank. Then he continued. "But there is something there. Whatever happened when we first met..." Shadow trailed off as his eyes grew haunted. He shook his head and turned away from me.
"Shadow..." I began, reaching out to grab him. I hesitated, though, when I felt the anger resonating from him. I pulled my hand back and he looked at me over his shoulder.
"Some things should remain forgotten." His tone of voice warned me to be careful, but his words bothered me. I frowned.
"How can you say that?! Are you not the one who's spent almost their entire life trying to get their memories back?! Maybe Maria should've remained forgotten! You'd be a lot happier if she had!" I exclaimed. Shadow's eyes filled with rage. It happened so fast, I didn't have time to react. One second, Shadow was glaring at me, the next, he was warping away, my blood on his glove. I gently dabbed at my bleeding nose, and deduced that it was broken. I winced as I took a deep breath. Shadow had quite the punch. I used my telekinesis to put the bone around my nose back together, which wasn't as good as getting it professionally mended, but it was more convenient. I sat down on the edge of the cliff and looked out at the setting sun. Some things should remain forgotten... Shadow had said. The light of the sun turned the sky into fire, and my heart hurt once more.
Whatever I was forgetting was not meant to remain forgotten. It's impossible... I feel the hole, but I can't fill it. I threw rocks into sea with my psychic abilities. I watched as each helpless stone spiraled into the water. A smirk made it's way onto my face. Every splash of another victim entering the ocean reminded me that I wasn't at the bottom of the heap. A thought crossed my mind, filling my heart with fear, but filling my soul with anticipation. I shook my head and got to my feet. Despair washed over me again. How do you remember something that doesn't exist?
