Chapter Four

Third POV Limited

Dinner was interrupted by a quiet tapping, Harry knew it could only belong to an owl. He winced to himself and prayed to Merlin that the owl would come back later, so it would not be hurt by his uncle. Aunt Petunia stilled her fork before it entered her mouth, and, waiting, she closed it. Her head titled ever so slightly, until she seemed to come back to herself. Aunt Petunia turned to Uncle Vernon, who was currently stuffing his face with steak, and called his name. "What, Pet?" Harry shivered at the rage in those simple words despite himself. "Do you hear that, Vernon?" Uncle Vernon patted his mouth with his napkin and listened, Dudley ignoring his surroundings in the place of food. Uncle Vernon's face turned purple with rage as he turned towards Harry, who visibly shrunk in on himself. "Is that an owl for you, freak?" Harry vehemently shook his head. "No sir. I didn't-" Uncle Vernon interrupted Harry with a roar, surging to his feet with his steak knife in his hand. "I'll kill it! That'll teach anyone to send you envelopes, freak!" Harry's face blanched and he ran towards where he heard the sound, on the living room widow that overlooked his garden. Uncle Vernon chased after him, but was much slower due to his overwhelming fat. "Go! Shoo! Fly away! Save yourself!" Harry's pleas fell on deaf owl ears as it just flapped there, coming closer to the window. Harry refused to move out of the way, but was shoved aside as Uncle Vernon pushed up the window to make a swipe with his knife, though he thankfully missed. Harry held his breath as the black horned owl hooted angrily and Uncle Vernon made another swipe, this time scarlet being drawn in a line across it's chest. The owl fell, a mass of darkness plummeting to the ground. Harry lunged for it, just managing to catch it before the hit the carpeted ground. He decided to quickly help the great horned owl, so as to return it to whomever was the owner. "No! Sir, you've sliced right through it's heart! How could you do such a thing to this refined creature's life?" Harry let tears run slowly down his cheeks as disgust filled Uncle Vernon's face. The owl remained silent and unmoving. "Take that back to your room, freak. I don't want to see it again. I'll visit your room later for your freakishness." Harry quickly nodded and gently wrapped the black owl in his arms, rushing up the stairs and shutting the door quickly, sealing it with a little locking magic. He gently splayed the beautiful owl on his bed, being careful to be gentle and nonaggressive as it watched him with brilliantly glowing yellow eyes. Harry carefully reached under one of his floorboards to take out his emergency salve, just in case Uncle Vernon took things too far and his magic couldn't heal him. He dabbed a very small amount on the tip of one of his fingers and brought it up to the owl's face, unsure if it would sniff the salve or take a taste. Awkwardly, Harry sat there until the owl turned it's head, as if granting a reluctant permission to him. Harry gently applied pressure around the wound and used his already bloody shirt to carefully wipe off the blood. He dabbed a little more salve on his finger before gently spreading it over a corner of the wound, the owl ruffled it's feathers as the pain. Harry tried to coo softly, so as to calm the animal, and it seemed to work, as the Great Horned owl's head gently rested back against the mattress. Harry continued to coo soothingly as he rubbed the salve into the black owl's chest, and Harry finally realized that it had a letter for him. After covering and bandaging the wound for safety, Harry felt stupid for not thinking of why the owl came to him in the first place. He gently unwrapped the letter from the black owl's leg, watching as it awkwardly hopped over to perch itself on the footboard of his bed. Taking one lance glance at the owl, Harry ignored the front of the card and went to the wax seal, to see just who sent this letter to him. Gringotts had been the sender of the letter, as Harry could easily see the name of the bank scripted on the top of the seal in small print. He worried for a minute as he thought of if the letter had anything to do with his recent changes, but decided that the only way he would find out was if he opened it. He hesitantly broke open the seal, and flinched at the loud snap it made. The letter rose out of his hands so he could read it, and he was glad it did, sure his hands would have shaken the page too much for him to read. The letter read:
Dear Mr. Potter,
We here at Gringotts are glad to inform you that you are one of the special wizards that will be going through a creature inheritance. We cannot say what your creature is, as changes to a person could cause different types of mutations to the genes, but that you will most definitely be having a creature inheritance tonight, on the eve of your eighteenth birthday. Since you will also be turning eighteen, we will need to see what heirships and lordships you will be receiving. This letter is a portkey that will take you to Gringotts at precisely one thirty in the morning. As well as the creature inheritance and heirships/lordships, we have noticed that you did not come in for your apparition license. If you so wish to be able to legally aparrate, we can give you your license if you show us you can properly aparrate upon arriving at Gringotts.
Sincerely,
Goblins of Gringotts
Harry stared blindly at the letter for a while before he gently put it under the floorboards where he knew it would be safe. The Great Horned owl looked at him sharply, and Harry sighed. "I'm sorry, I do not have any treats for you. They are all in my trunk downstairs." The owl huffed and ruffled it's feathers slightly. He heard hard steps on the floor in the kitchen, leading to the living room, and Harry's eyes widened. "Quick! You need to get out of here! I know you can't fly, just, just, in here!" Harry was panicking and flinging his gaze about until he spotted the small closet that was full of Dudley's clothes. He gently grabbed the owl and, despite it's sharp talons and angry hoots, Harry placed him on top of the top shelf and closed the door, praying to Merlin that the black owl would stay silent. He quickly dashed back onto his bed and hid the medical supplies. He shuffled back into the corner of his bed as the door was slammed open by Uncle Vernon with Dudley smiling behind him viciously. Harry knew he would definitely be needing to use the rest of his magical healing supplies that night.
