Chapter 6....
"We're taking my truck." Mason tossed his keys in his hands.
"But my car-"
"Is still at the hotel, I know, but my truck holds more." He waved me off as he went to the drivers side of his truck. Opening the door he looked over at me. "Coming?"
I only hesitated for a moment before nodding. I did need to find a veil but I also wanted to be selfish and spend more time with Mason. I knew once the wedding was over he'd go back to work and we'd go back to seeing each other once every few months in passing.
Not letting myself second guess it I quickly got in the passenger side. While he started the truck up I glanced around and was once again surprised at how clean it was. When I first got in I kind of expecting to see the floor littered with wrappers but nope. It was clean just like he bought it and it even smelled good. Pine mixed with a bit of...cedar. The smell was all Mason.
Trying not to be a creep and start smelling his truck I took my phone out.
"First we should try the bridal store on Main Street. We went there a few months back and they had a good selection." I rambled off.
Honestly Mason was the last person I thought that I would spend my afternoon with. Going to a bunch of bridal stores looking for veils didn't seem like something he would enjoy. Especially for a guy who knew next to nothing about weddings. I give him 20 minutes before he starts complaining.
While Mason steered us towards main street I fiddled with my phone, not really sure what to say.
"So you said you are almost done with your project?" I finally asked, breaking the silence.
"Yeah. We are actually ahead of schedule so I'll head back next week and finish it up."
"It's for that big hotel isn't it?" Mason nodded.
"I haven't told anyone yet but...they've already asked me to build another for them." My eyes widened.
"Mason! That's fantastic news!" I beamed over at him. "You've done such a good job they are probably going to hire you to always build for them."
"That's hopefully the plan. They pay amazingly well and now I can expand the company and get more workers." I sat there listening to him talk about expanding, hearing the passion in his voice as he talked about his work. I loved listening to people talk about their passions and seeing their faces light up. Seeing the look on Mason's face made me smile.
"Mase that is amazing. Your parents and Heather are going to be so proud." I found myself reaching over and grabbed his bicep, squeezing it gently. I ignored the hard muscle under my fingers as I did so.
"I'll tell them after the wedding. The last thing I want is to steal Heather's thunder." I couldn't help but laugh and agree.
"True she probably won't even hear a word you say unless the word wedding is in it." Mason chuckled alongside me as we pulled in front of the bridal store. I silently prayed this place would have one on such short notice but I didn't have much hope. Sometimes bridal stores don't have veils laying around since they are customized to the dress.
"Lets do this." I said out loud and hopped out of the truck. My heels clicked loudly on the pavement as I marched for the door. I was going to get that veil come hell or high water.
"Someone's on a mission." Mason remarked behind me.
"The sooner we find one the better. You have yet to see Heather in one of her breakdowns but I have. It isn't pretty." I shook my head as I opened the door, the bell chiming loudly overhead. I already knew what Heather's wedding dress looked like, but I pulled up a picture of it on my phone.
"Okay so this is the dress. We need something to match it." I told Mason, showing him the picture.
"Aren't they all the same?" I had to resist every urge not to groan. Well he was going to be useless.
"Some have rhinestones on the top, some are tiara's, lace or no lace, and some even are in different colors." I listed off. I should know since I looked at about a thousand before Heather decided on hers.
"Uh." The look on Mason's face was actual comical. He really didn't know what he was signing up for me when he agreed to come with me.
"If you see something that looks like a veil just let me know and I'll do the rest." I waved him off before making my way to the counter.
As I talked to the lady behind the counter, I glanced over my shoulder and found Mason just awkwardly standing in the middle of the room. I shook my head while grinning. Poor guy.
While the lady went in the back to see what they had I made my way back to Mason. He had migrated over to a rake of gowns and flipping through them.
"Thinking of getting a gown for yourself?" I asked.
"I think strapless will suit my body better." He played along, looking down at me with a grin. I looked him up and down before nodding.
"A strapless lace number would look gorgeous on you."
"I agree." He went back to looking at the dresses before pulling one out. It was a gorgeous gown with a lace bodice and it was strapless. He held it up to his body and looked at me. "Think this is the one?"
I reached out and ran my hand down the silk fabric. It was beyond gorgeous. I tapped my finger against my chin and tilted my head.
"I like it but I think you need more flare."
"Hm more flare." I bit my lip to hold back a grin as he put the gown back and rifled through some more. Pulling out another one, this time it was more of a ball gown and had little puffy sleeves. He held it up to his chest and even made a show of popping his hip out.
"This one?"
"Hmm no too prom-y. Next." I flicked my hand. After another moment of rifling through the rack Mason pulled out another dress and this one...this one was beautiful. Just the right amount of flare at the bottom that would trail when you walk, a clinched waist that turned into beading and was strapless.
"Show stopper." I nodded in approval.
"I think we found the one. And it accents my skin tone." The serious look on his face made me lose it. I couldn't stop the loud laughter from escaping my lips. When he started making posing with the dress I laughed harder.
I had always been a loud laugher and it seemed to echo through the room but I couldn't help it as Mason kept on being a dork. He may be two years older than me but he still acted like a 10 year old.
"Oh. Ah." He even made noises with each pose, which just sent me into another laughing spill.
"I have those veils for you." A new voice interrupted my laughing. I quickly straightened up as my laughter died. Mason paused mid-pose and stared behind me.
Turning slowly I sent the lady a sheepish smile. She didn't look too amused. At least we were the only ones in here.
"Right." I cleared my throat and stepped towards her. "We'll look at those veils now." I stifled a giggle at the stink eye she was giving Mason behind me.
Taking her focus off of him I lead us back to the counter which now had five boxes on it. Behind me I could hear Mason putting the gown back.
"Here is the first one." The lady said as she opened the first box. Sitting inside perfectly was a pretty veil. She gently pulled it out, the white tulle pretty long. It was a simple veil with a little piece that would slide into the hair.
While it was pretty it wasn't something Heather would go for. A little too simple for her and trust me I'd know.
"What about the next one?"
The same thing for the next four veils. They were all beautiful but none of them stood out. So when I saw the last one I sighed.
"I liked the second to last one." Mason said trying to be helpful.
"You know Heather..." I trailed off pinching the bridge of my nose. The fact that I already had a shit ton left to do was now weighing on me. And I needed it all done before 4 so I can get ready for the rehearsal dinner tonight.
"My sister owns another bridal store down around the corner. You can look there." The lady behind the counter suggested, taking pity on me. While she may not have enjoyed our little....display earlier she became nicer as we looked at veils.
"Really? That would be wonderful!" I sent her a grateful look. "Thank you so much." Grabbing Mason's hand I tugged him after me as I headed for the door.
