Chapter Four
I stood up and went out the door, hearing the panic in the Nurses' name as she called after me. Glancing left and right, I spotted the kid ducking under people as he ran down the street. I gave chase, apologizing to people as I pushed past them. I don't know what urged me to follow him, but seeing how scared he was and how he mouthed run just made me curious.
Catching up to him was harder than it seemed, he always seemed to be just out of reach. As I put more distance between us he suddenly made a sharp right and straight into the alley. I skidded to a halt and had to backtrack just a couple feet before I stood at the entrance. I could see his outline in the far back, frozen and not moving. I went in, the noise of the street dulling the further I went in.
Just as I got close enough, goosebumps became apparent on my arms. It was cold back there. I pulled my sleeves down and kept walking further in, getting closer to the kid. Things became darker the further I went in, and as my eyes adjusted I finally made out shapes better.
The kid was staring at me, eyes wide in fear. What threw me off was the faint light blue glow near his neck. Before I could call out he ran through a broken fence to our right, a bright orange construction sign next to it. I let out a sigh and made it to where he was standing, once again looking into the darkness.
"Hey kid! You can't be in there," I called out, my words spilling out quicker than I wanted them. When I got no answer I went in further, glancing around the construction supplies. There was various metal and wood planks lying around with heavy equipment. When I got in far enough, the smell of burning tar hit my nose, making me choke on my breath. I pulled my shirt over my nose, continuing to head in.
A faint blue glow behind a hanging plastic sheet caught my eye. It outlined a small shadow, the size of the kid.
Before I could react it jumped out at me, screeching at the top of its lungs. I jumped out of the way and yelled, losing my balance and falling. I blinked a couple times before looking at what stood before me, horror movies not preparing me.
It was the size of the kid I was following, but it was now a dripping black ooze monster. Light blue tubes ran stuck from its neck and connected to its back, giving off the glow I saw. It had four bent limbs with no apparent hands or feet, I couldn't see any eyes, but where the head was supposed to be was an open mouth dripping with more ooze. The burning tar smell became worse, making my head spin. It shrieked again, standing and crouching on its legs before backing up slowly and putting its back to some metal pipes.
I glanced around quick, seeing the area where I came from. I also spotted a pile of wood to my left, making it a great place to hide in case it charged again. Also to my right was heavy nails used to weld the pipes together, making that a choice of weapon. I had to act fast.
------
Choice One: Hide behind the pile of wood
Choice Two: Dive for the heavy nails to use a weapon
Choice Three: Run to the exit
Now, this begins the life or death choices. If a death route is chosen, these options are presented again until the life route is chosen. Choose wisely.
