12. Double Date
When they got to the restaurant a couple weeks after they confirmed the date would be happening, it was kind of awkward. No, not kind of, very awkward. The night started off with the waitress trying to flirt with David, who was very uncomfortable and very not into females. The waitress stopped when Will got jealous and kissed his boyfriend square on the lips, an act of confidence Dalton's had never thought his best friend had in him. They promptly got a replacement so that the rest of the night wouldn't be so awkward. It didn't work.
As soon as the waiter they got as a replacement put Cole's glass of coke down, he accidentally knocked it over on the floor, causing Dalton, who had been sitting in between Cole and the wall in a booth seat, to get an eyeful of Cole's butt when the other boy bent over to try to soak it up with napkins. David, who was sitting across from Cole, caught Dalton looking and gave him a look that caused the blond's face to heat up in embarrassment.
When they were waiting for their food, Dalton and Cole had to be subjected to the sickeningly adorable puppy love that was happening in the booth seat across from them. Dalton rolled his eyes when David started whispering sweet nothings into Will's ear. At one point, Cole even leaned over to Dalton and told him if David and Will's relationship was just in this stage for the rest of their lives, he would not be surprised. Dalton agreed wholeheartedly.
Finally, their waiter approached with their food, the wrong food. Apparently he hadn't been paying attention and the chef had given him the wrong order. The table that had been given their orders had apparently already started eating, which was strange until they saw that a high school football team scarfing down every bit and scrap of food they could find. They would have to wait another handful of minutes as the chef remade their orders. At least now they got a discount and some free breadsticks.
"So, I hear you guys are gonna be done your whole dance workshop class thing very soon." Cole started a conversation before Will and David could start to go back to all the mushy gushy romance. Dalton was absolutely certain that this was the most thankful he had ever been for Cole since they met.
"Oh yeah, that's true. Well I'm excited to not have to go to school on Saturdays again but I'll miss those kids." David nodded, having a very thoughtful look on his face.
"Do you guys think you can come in again before it ends? I think the kids you taught really loved the both of you, and it might be more fun now that you both don't hate each other anymore, right?" Will asked with a begging look in his brown eyes.
"I mean, I'd totally be down. I would love to see those kids again." Cole shrugged.
Dalton pursued his lips together as he started to think. He did need to spend more time with his best friend, and he did want to get to know Cole better now that they weren't extremely annoyed with each other. Plus, it would be nice to see Willow, that girl that was super nice to him the first time he was there, again. The only thing is that Dalton was very lazy. If he didn't have work or school, he doubted he would make an attempt to leave his apartment on a regular basis. Stack the laziness on top of the fact that he was tremendously busy these days, he wasn't sure if he would even be free. Then again, it's not like he couldn't cancel plans on that day if he had any, he didn't exactly have the most social life.
"Okay, sure. I'm in." Dalton shrugged, pretending like he hadn't just mulled over his options for the past two minutes while everyone else was talking about a completely different topic.
"Oh! Great! I'll try to find a date that you guys are off work and have no classes then!" David smiled, grabbing his phone. Dalton guessed that it's probably to write down everything that had just been decided for his dance class with Will. "This'll be great, the kids loved when you guys were there! I mean, except for the fact that Dalton was acting clueless to every detail and Alan was being very frustrated."
"That is so not my fault Chris." Which just confirmed that this whole thing was awkward because both David and Will's faces scrunched up as if they had had to sit through two strangers arguing very loudly in a public place. Cole had the face of a man who had just realized he regretted everything. Dalton was just playing around with his breadstick, not even moving to actually eat it, his expression would've been hard to read by everyone except for his family and closest friends, like Will, who immediately knew to change the conversation.
"Hey, so you guys are both in music technologies right? Do you like, ever record your own music?"
Those two phrases were very smart choices to change the topic with. It sparked a conversation between the four about different styles of songs and which ones were the best. Even Dalton joined in the conversation with some salty quips and points to try and get more people to side with him and his rock and roll. The blond even ended up eating all of his breadstick subconsciously while they conversed. They were already into a very focused debate between Will's Jazz and Cole's country when the waiter came in to give them the food they had been waiting for.
By the time they finished their food, they were already closer than Dalton could probably ever imagine them being. He and Cole had even played a couple rounds of twenty questions after a bit of listening to Will and David talk about their Pokémon obsessions.
When they finished and payed for their food, Will and Dalton hugged their respective dates, Will adding a kiss as well, before heading home.
"See that was fun, right?" Will interjected as they walked to Dal's car.
And it was, but considering his past with Cole, he wasn't exactly sure whether or not he should be worried. Because after Cole laughed about the tenth time that night, Dalton felt something in his gut that made him want to revoke every encounter he ever had with the other man. It was a feeling that he never thought he would feel (admit).
Dalton Louis Rapattoni might have a crush on Cole.
